Algebra 2 AB

Mrs. Pretz

Major Topics To Be Covered:

Algebra 2 expands on the material learned in Algebra 1. Topics include equations and inequalities, function and graphs, linear systems, matrices, quadratic equations and functions, polynomials, radical functions and rational exponents, exponential and logarithmic functions, conic sections, sequences and series, statistics, periodic functions, and trigonometry.

Texts/Resources:

Pearson: Prentice Hall Algebra 2

TI-83/83+ or TI-84 graphing calculator

Class Participation:

A notebook and folder or three-ring binder should be maintained in this class in which class notes, handouts, tests, quizzes, and assignments are kept.

Students are expected to participate in class activities – asking and answering questions, putting problems on the board, working together on classroom activities, etc.

Homework/Assignments:

Homework problems are the best way to prepare for quizzes and tests. Therefore, usually homework will be assigned and checked daily. Each assignment is worth 2 points. All problems must be attempted and work shown to receive full credit. Homework is checked for completion not accuracy. Students should check the answers in the back of the book and come to class with questions on problems with which they had difficulty. Occasional Homework quizzes will also be given. Late homework will not be accepted.

Tests, Quizzes, Projects, Reports:

Quizzes (announced or unannounced) will be given on a regular basis and will vary in point value depending on length. Tests will be given at the end of each unit and are generally 70 to 100 points.

Midyear/Final Exams:

A midyear and a final exam will be given during the time designated by the District. The weight of each semester exam will be 10% of the final grade.

Formula for Determining Marking Period Percentage Grades:

Grades are calculated by dividing the number of points the student has earned by the total number of possible points. All students are expected to track their own progress. Grades can be checked on line.

Classroom Rules & Procedures:

The student is to attend all classes and arrive on time unless legitimately excused. He/she is to bring the textbook, notebook, pen or pencil and calculator to each class.

Respect for all individuals, the maintenance of an environment conducive to the teaching and learning process, and integrity and honesty are expected at all times.

A zero-tolerance policy will be in effect for all instances of cheating. If a student is found cheating during a test or quiz, they will receive a zero for that assessment. All incidents of cheating will be referred to the administration.

Absences & Make-up Work:

The student is responsible for all work missed during any absence. Students should check Mrs. Pretz’s teacher page for any handouts or notes from class. I recommend that each student have someone in the class who he/she can contact for missed assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to make up the work and inform the teacher in order to receive credit. If a student is absent on the day of a quiz or test, he/she is expected to make up the quiz or test in a timely fashion consistent with school policy.

Seeking Extra Help:

Students can obtain extra help in the Achievement Center located in Room 264. The Math Aide is available Monday through Friday, 1st through 8th periods. I am usually available after school or in the morning for extra help. Students should contact me in person or via email to set up an appointment.

School-wide Cut Policy:

Because attendance is highly correlated with academic success, school policies are designed to discourage unauthorized absences from class. Students who remove themselves from the educational environment by “cutting” class will receive a marking period grade reduction of ten percentage points for the first cut. A second cut will result in a grade of 50 (fifty percent) for the marking period.

Class Website

I maintain a class website which can be accessed by clicking on my name on the Teacher Pages on the Conestoga page of the TE Website. It will have links to the syllabus for the current unit as well as any handouts and worksheet for the unit. It will also have a calendar for each unit and links to selected problem solutions and class notes.

Tips for Success

Be prepared to work hard.

The class is going to move quickly. Make sure you get help if you are feeling overwhelmed. Don’t wait until the day before a quiz or test to seek help.

Do not be afraid to participate, ask questions, and receive extra help. I am here to make this a successful experience for you.

Please carefully read the above information and sign below to indicate your understanding of these policies. Contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
