It not only has become a key component of human resource management but also the responsibility of leaders and managers at all levels to manage talent within the business, with TM strategies being developed in line with the particular needs and structure of the business and industry.?Themes of TM relevant to the hospitality and tourism industries when considering a strategic approach to talent management include the following:the role of line managers and leaders in employee development and well-being; talent management being used as a lever for culture change; the importance of contextualising approaches to talent management; the need for new and innovative ways of working to achieve a strategic approach to talent management; barriers for the development of a strategic approach caused by economic and day-to-day operational pressures.Staff retention, training and morale is key in any industry, none more so than in the hospitality and tourism business where talented motivated employees can help differentiate one organisation from another and influence business success. An increasing number of businesses are rethinking ways to get the most from their staff. Rising costs, recruitment difficulties and changing employee attitudes mean that, for many employers, the traditional approaches to recruiting, training and retaining staff are being revisited to harness and develop talent and ultimately drive competitive advantage.1.2Topic SelectionTutors must choose one topic from the list provided below and decide which type of assignment is most suitable for small-scale research. All students must complete an assignment brief for the same topic as chosen by the tutor. However, if delivering to different cohorts of students, tutors may select a different topic for each cohort. The Assignment Guidance document for Unit 5: Leadership and Management for Service Industries, provides additional support and guidance for both tutors and ics1. ?What talent strategies do the best companies in the service sector use to attract and retain people?2. What are the key challenges and obstacles facing leaders and managers in the service sector in terms of talent management?3. How are leaders and managers in the service sector responding to managing talent across different age profiles?4. How do different cultures influence the talent management approaches taken by leaders and managers in the service sector?1.3Assignment Evidence / OutcomesThe assignment brief must set the context and scenario within the parameters of the theme and topic. Students are required to produce evidence for an assignment activity that has been constructed around the theme and selected topic. The brief must provide full guidance, focusing on content matter which specifically relates to the topic, so students are in a position to fulfil the requirements of the assessment criteria. The assignment must address all learning outcomes and be contextualised through investigation and research into a specific service industry organisation. It is important to recognise that there are many different formats that a student could use to present their work and it is important that tutors think carefully about the suitability of the format in relation to the target audience. Both verbal and written forms of communication should be appropriate to the audience, both in terms of the nature and level of material they use and also in terms of length. Students should be guided to produce research that gives a succinct account of the main arguments or developments from their assignment brief. If a verbal presentation is the chosen format, the question and answer session should address issues raised by the presentation, but also give students an opportunity to reflect on their work.1.4Employer engagementIt is advisable that centres consider the Pearson-set assignment as an appropriate unit to embed employer engagement; although this is not a mandatory requirement. Developing and establishing links with employers enhances the teaching and learning experience and improve students' employability. Where possible, identifying links with employers as part of the delivery of the Pearson- set assignment could lead to enhancing and supporting student learning. Application to real life contexts provides students with the opportunity to develop and acquire appropriate skills, knowledge and expertise required by employers.1.5Sharing of good practiceAn appointed External Examiner (EE) for the centre will ask to sample the assignment briefs for review as part of the remote sampling request. Although this is not a mandatory requirement for centres we strongly advise that centres seek guidance and support from their EE on the Pearson-set assignment. The EE may also include the Pearson-set units in the centre visit sample of student work. Good practice will focus on current themes that include:InnovationDigital literacyStudent employability and entrepreneurial skillsEmployer engagementQuality of assessment feedback.1.6Resources and useful linksSuggested resources and links that centres may find useful are shown below.
