February 2016Volunteer OpportunitiesDear Volunteer,Your dedication to the community of Waukesha County helps us to serve those in need. We appreciate your time and dedication to Interfaith Senior Programs as we work to meet the needs of the rapidly increasing senior population. By 2040 the senior population will have increased by nearly 10%.Urgent NeedsBanting Readers’ Café: Banting is starting a new Readers Café program in February. Volunteers are needed to read to or listen to 5th grade students during their lunch and recess. The program will take place on Thursdays from February 18th through May 5th. There will be a volunteer orientation held on February 11th at 12:00pm. If interested contact Corinn, (262) 522-2403 or CorinnM@.One on One Student Helper- Banting: A 4th grade student is in need of some 1 on 1 assistance from 11:30am to 12:00pm any day(s) of the week at Banting Elementary School. The staff is looking for someone to give the student special attention, read some books together, talk, etc. Please contact Corinn if interested.One on One Student Helper- Lowell: A 3rd grade student is in need of some 1 on 1 tutoring during her reading period (10:15am – 11:35am) any day(s) of the week at Lowell Elementary School. The staff is looking for someone to act as a mentor and reading buddy for this 3rd grade girl who is in need of a little extra care and attention right now. Please contact Corinn if interested.Dr. Seuss Reading Day: On Friday, March 4th, Banting will be celebrating Dr. Seuss by holding another “Read In Day”. Volunteers and members of the community will be asked to come and read their favorite book to a classroom of students (10-20 minutes per class). Sign up to read to as many classes as you would like! Times range from 9:00am – 11:30am and 12:30pm – 3:00pm. Contact Corinn if interested.Riverside Elementary Readers’ Café: Come and share your love of reading with an elementary school student over their lunch hour. This program will be on Thursdays from February – April from 11:00am-12:00pm. For more information, please contact Dawn Hinton, Program Coordinator at (262) 391-2232 or DawnH@.Healthcare and Grocery Shopping Drivers: We are currently receiving about 80 ride request a week. Finding drivers for all these rides to doctors’ appointments or the grocery store is becoming increasingly challenging. If you have a couple hours to spare during the week, consider driving for Interfaith.Male Friendly Visitor: Isolation is a growing problem among older adults. Give the gift of friendship to someone. Friendly visitors are matched with an isolated senior in their area and meet on a regular basis in the senior's home. Some seniors request to play games, but many just want a friendly person to talk with. We are currently looking for male companions to a visit weekly or biweekly.Male Non-medical Respite: Help relieve a caregiver for a few hours and make a connection with a care receiver. Your visit with the care receiver will be strictly nonmedical. Your gift allows the caregiver time to complete much needed tasks or take a mental health break.Lawn Mowing: According to the groundhog, spring is coming early! Help keep someone in their home by providing lawn mowing services. Get matched with someone in need in your area and cut their grass for the season! This is a great opportunity to make an impact and enjoy the beautiful Wisconsin summer weather.Contact Anna for more details on how to fill our urgent needs at (262) 522-2402 or AnnaR@.Community SupportShorehaven Volunteers: Shorehaven in Oconomowoc is looking for gift shop volunteers for two different shifts Thursdays (weekly or biweekly) 10:00am-1:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm and thrift shop volunteers on Mondays from 9:00am-12:30pm or 12:30pm-4:00pm. Duties will include, sorting donations, placing donations on the display floor, and assisting staff where needed.Hope Center Clothing Shop Sorter: Are you looking for a way to get involved in the community? Hope Center has several openings for people to sort clothes Monday through Friday 8:00am-12:00pm, Wednesday through Friday 12:30pm-4:30pm, and Saturday 8:00am-12:00pm. Time and lengths of shifts are flexible!Hope Center Receptionist: Receptionist wanted from 12:00pm-4:30pm Wednesdays and Fridays at the Hope Center. The receptionist would answer phones and do data entry. Hope center is seeking someone who can use the computer independently.Meal Delivery Drivers in Oconomowoc: Do you have a spare hour a week? Drive a meal to a person who is homebound. Meal Delivery Drivers are needed weekly Monday or Friday from 11:00am-12:00pm out in Oconomowoc.Sussex & Hartland Senior Meal Drivers needed: Help deliver meals to homebound seniors living in Sussex and Hartland weekdays between the hours of 11:00am – 1:00pm. Mileage reimbursement provided. Must be at least 18 years of age and show proof of car insurance and a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.Healing Hearts of Waukesha County: Dealing with loss is never easy at any age. Healing Hearts is seeking compassionate volunteers to help grieving children and their families deal with loss in grief support group as a facilitator and a “security” monitor. Volunteers would be trained and placed alongside an experienced facilitator. The “security” monitor would welcome the participants and patrol the halls while group is in session. Sessions are every Monday starting February 8th and going until May 2nd from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.Curative Care Network Visitor: Curative is looking for volunteers to come in and share their time with clients who have dementia. This might include helping with an activity, reading out loud, sharing a hobby, playing a game or music. Help is needed anytime Monday through Friday between 7:00am and 5:30pm.Contact Anna for more details at (262) 522-2402 or AnnaR@.Festival of FlowersPlease join us at our upcoming event Festival of Flowers on March 9th. Waukesha Floral and Greenhouse will be putting on a floral demo for all participants to learn how to arrange the perfect centerpiece for any occasion. There will be three opportunities to sit in on the fun-two luncheons at 11:00am and 1:00pm catered by Rochester Deli, as well as, a wine and cheese tasting held at 5:30pm featuring wine from Crush Wine Bar and specialty cheeses from Brennan’s Market.
