98TH BIRTHDAY WON'T DETER AVID GOLFER

by Ken Bradford, Tribune Staff Writer

George Stroup took a couple of practice swings with his driver.

"I'll hit is straight," he said before dipping his knees and putting his tee in the ground. "It won't go far. I lost a lot of distance when I turned 80."

True to his word he launched his first shot at Elbel Municipal Golf Course right down the middle of the fairway, maybe 130 or so yards away.

He shrugged, joined golf partner George Pavlick in his cart and started enjoying another round of golf.

If you can order a perfect day for your birthday, this might have been it.

The sun warmed his golf hat and a polite wind was at his back. Stroup, wiry and clear-eyed, was aiming to shoot his age.

The day before, he would have needed a 97. With Friday being his 98th birthday, this day he could afford an extra stroke. "I try to stay in the 90s," he said.

"I caddied out at the South Bend Country Club when I was 12 or 13 years old," he said. It was just a nine-hole course then. They wouldn't let us caddies play." He made himself a promise. "I knew when I retired, I was going to play golf," he said.

For many years, he operated the Stroup Welding and Spring Shop on West Edison Road. People would bring him plows and shears to sharpen, said his niece, Vada Millar. "He's always been hard-working, self-motivated and self-driven," she said. "This is a man who didn't take any medication until last year." Now he takes some pain medication so his neuralgia doesn't interfere with his hobbies.

"He's a golfer first and a fisherman second," she said. He gets out on Chain-O-Lakes once or twice a week, looking for bluegill. "No bites the last time," he said. Even when the fish won't cooperate, he knows he's been blessed with good health and mroe.

He married Edna, his childhood sweetheart, and enjoyed 72 years of marriage before her death in 1996.

Nephews, nieces and his many friends had a big party for him Satruday afternoon at the Four Seasons restaurant. On Friday, he was enjoying 18 holes with Pavlick, Maurice Adams and Max Borntrager.

"We met him on a course in New Carlisle last year," Borntrager said. Stroup was looking for playing partners, he said, because he had outlived all his other buddies. "He shoots darn good for his age," Borntrager said. His secret is simply trying hard every time, Stroup said. "I've played because it's fun, and I've always wanted to be better," he said. He's been playing regularly since he retired from his welding business in 1965, at age 59. Despite his late start, he became quite a golfer. "I was shooting in the 70s and low 80s," he said. As his age goes up, so do his scores. He shot a 104 at Elbel on Friday. If he wants to shoot his age, he'll have to stick around another six years. But he isn't the type to get upset, throw a club or offer an excuse. "Nothing bothers me," he said "as long as I'm on the course."
