October 2011 Newsletter

REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS

Lockheed Martin's Workplace Security policy, CPS-565 is strictly enforced. One provision of the policy is a workplace free of weapons, which includes Firearms, Ammunition, Bows and Arrows. The club must emphasize this policy to our members. Additionally, a state issued CCW permit does not supersede nor over ride this LM policy. Members wanting to store firearms or archery equipment during the day ONLY, must contact Gene Adamson (303-971-1531) for access instructions.

Call Plant Protection (7-4646) if you have an incident or injury on the range.

ADDITIONAL REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS AND RANGE USERS

• Please be sure to observe the speed limits on the range access road.

• Please be careful when driving on the roads, the horses may not move out of your way.

• Gate signs are in place indicating when horses are in the pasture – it they sign says “horses in pasture” they need to be kept closed. New signs have been added to help make sure it is clear if the gate should be open or closed.

• Archery Hunting boundaries have been significantly constrained due to hazardous propulsion testing – adherence to restrictions are MANDATORY – see Archery Section and your Archery representatives for more info!

• Watch out for Rattlesnakes at the range!

• If you do not have your child’s Hunter Education (HE) or Home Firearm Safety (HFS) Card you will be turned away from being able to shoot. Run a copy of the card and present it to the RSO the next time you are out. As these cards never expire, if you provide the copy once, you should be Ok for the future. If you need to get a copy of your HE card, call the Division of Wildlife or show a license that has the proof of Hunter Ed verified on it.

President’s Corner

Are you ready for big game rifle season? We’ve had a considerable number of club members coming out to make sure their rifles are sighted-in and that they are ready when the “Big One” comes by. Good luck to everyone and be safe!

It seems that we are finally getting into a bit of a groove with all of the new procedures at the ranges. Getting RSO coverage is still the biggest problem. We are finally in a position to put on our own RSO classes both economically and with some SHFC-specific information. Take a look at the article later in the newsletter if you are interested in earning your workbond hours keeping the ranges running!

With fall temperatures coming and daylight getting shorter and shorter each day, our organized evening events will be ending soon. If you haven’t had a chance to make it out this year, don’t wait too long. Some of the folks will try to stretch things out as long as they can. Check the calendar for the latest schedule of events.

As in previous year’s, the club will be supporting the 2011 Diversity Connection exhibit. This informational fair will be held on Thursday, October 13 in the Titan Conference Room of the Engineering Building from 11:00am to 1:00pm. We will have a table set up to answer questions about the club and its activities. If anyone wants to earn a couple of hours of workbond, we could use some help setting up and staffing the table. Send me an email (james.a.cathcart@) if you are interested in helping.

We’ll have SHFC T-shirts available at the October general membership meeting. They are $10 apiece. They are a great way to show your club support and to advertise the club while you are shooting at outside events. If you would like to purchase a few, bring cash or check made out to SHFC.

We still need a lot more membership participation to run the club and the ranges with this new method of operation. We’ve identified even more new jobs that need doing. Keep an eye on the emails for some of these announcements! We’ve got jobs that range from records keeping to running to Wal-Mart to landscaping! Don’t wait until February to get your workbond done! Norm Viste (normviste@) is our Workbond Chair and has a list of tasks that need to be done.

rso hotline, website, and training!!!

• Hotline: (303) 971-3798 (Recorded message about range and RSO status)

• Website: (RSO calendar accessible by all of the membership from both inside and outside the LM and ULA Networks)

• The next Range Safety Officer (RSO) training classes are now ready. We are trying to accommodate all you who would like to become an RSO in the next few weeks. We will be holding two classes to make sure all who want to gain this NRA certification are able to attend. One class will be held on Friday, October 14th, and another on Saturday, November 5th. Preregistration is required. If enough people do not sign-up for each class, we will consolidate the two classes into one. YOU will be required to gain certification or you must reimburse the club for your student package that the club is procuring. If you work your workbond hours as an RSO, your continued certification fees are reimbursed by the club. We will not be offering another class until the March/April 2012 timeframe- So Don’t Miss Out! To sign-up or answer questions, call Gene Adamson 303-971-1531 or email, gene.adamson@.

REQUIRED MANDATORY MEMBER TRAINING SESSIONS COMPLETED

If you are an existing member and you DID NOT attend any of the myriad of training sessions over the last few months you will be required to rejoin the club as a new member if you wish to continue your membership. If you have questions – please contact: Gene Adamson (gene.adamson@) or Jim Cathcart (james.a.cathcart@).

MEMBER annual test support - workbond

Many of you colorful members provided fascinating inputs over the specific questions of the annual member test required. I told you that if you complained, you could “own” that question. So, here’s your chance. The company wants both the Annual Safety Briefing and a test taken by each active member. We need a database of questions to select from. Please submit your complete questions and answer selections to Brian Sompayrac, brian.w.sompayrac@ or Gene Adamson, gene.adamson@ for consideration. If your questions are selected for the database, you will receive a half hour of workbond per successful question submitted. Please remember that the function of a “good” test is to reinforce knowledge and ensure understanding. We already have old, stupid, gotcha and incorrect questions…we don’t need any more of those. Call or email Brian or Gene if you need any information.

Any members interested in joining us, are asked to meet at the Wadsworth gate, have their youngsters Hunter Ed card or Home Firearm Safety card present, and bring along some ammunition for whatever events they would like to shoot in. If they are new to shotguns, we have both 20 and 12 gauge, and we’ll work with the kids to make sure they get the right size. Please shoot Paul or Gene an email so we know how many to expect. We will also be hosting Boy Scout shooting events. The programs are COED, and open to all youths between the ages of 12 through 19 who have a valid Hunter Ed or NRA firearms safety card in their possession for admittance to the SHFC range. A current waiver form is required. For more information on all youth shooting programs contact Paul Monce at 303-977-3823 or paul.a.monce@ or Gene Adamson at 303-971-1531, email, gene.adamson@

Summer/Winter 3-gun

Summer 3-Gun this year will be held on the first and second off-Fridays of the month through October.  October 14th and 28th will be the last two summer 3-gun matches this year. Start time of 3:00 pm with setup starting at 2:30 pm. The first winter 3-gun match will be on the traditional day after Thanksgiving.  Black Friday on 25th November.  Start time of 9 AM.  For those new to 3-gun, it is similar to our Wednesday night practical pistol except we shoot the pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed. Since the Summer 3-Gun runs concurrent to practical pistol, we’ll have a heavier emphasis on the rifle and shotgun. Getting bored sitting at the bench shooting paper targets? Want to develop your action shooting skills, shoot on the move, handle shooting under physical and mental pressure, add new dimensions to your shooting skills, refine and test your shooting gear? Summer 3-gun is the game for you. Shooters of all levels are welcome. Summer 3-Gun’s goals are safety, skill development, fun and challenge. Shooters new to practical action shooting should call ahead to arrange a safety briefing. Contact Walter Tang at 303-977-6474 or email walter.w.tang@ to get on the mailing list. I usually send out the stage description before the shoot so you’ll know what to expect and how much ammo to bring.

Practical Pistol - classic

Every Wednesday night through November 2nd, weather permitting. We will leave the gate area at 4:30 and try to fire first shots at 5:00. Every 4th Wednesday of the month is 22 pistol – no draw from holster – speed drill night. Every 3rd Wednesday one or more stages will be shot with a shotgun.

Events are loosely based on USPSA/IDPA competition matches. Safe gun handling is stressed as it is everywhere on the SHFC range. Shooting from cover, around, over, through concealment, on the move, out of position, weak hand only, strong hand only, reloads, target identification drills, number of shots on target and voice commands are a few of the things covered (usually, not all on the same night!) Expect to shoot around 50 rounds for record each night. For more information call Mike S. 7-3478.

Practical Pistol Ladies Only

EVENTS COMPLETED FOR THIS YEAR

Practical Pistol – Lite

Practical Pistol Lite started Monday, June 6th and goes every other Monday through October. For those of you who are new to Practical Pistol, this affords less experience shooters and opportunity to come out with a group of like-minded shooters and practice defensive skills. As always we will first and foremost focus on range safety. This year we are limiting participation to semi-automatics pistols in the effort to speed up the courses and get more shooting for everyone. Make sure your equipment (Pistol, Holster, Mag pouches) is in good repair and good working order. Carbine and shotgun nights will be less frequent this year to concentrate on pistol shooting and to allow everyone to get in more shooting. We meet at the gate around 4:15, and head to the range no later than 4:30. There has never been a better opportunity to tune your defensive pistol skills, and create a defensive mindset . Remember to sign in at the RSO shed before going to the Pistol House. Call Dave Norris at 303-204-6735 (cell) or Tom Frickell at 720-202-6502, or email at david.w.norris.jr@.

SUper tuesday Competition pistol (STCP)

This event is held every Tuesday night and is more closely aligned with USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) where accuracy, power and speed are considered to be equivalent elements of practical shooting.     This practical pistol competition event is free style and is a test of expertise in the use of practical firearms and equipment.   Challenges are presented through the use of various stage props and designs where the competitor has to solve them in a manner he or she considers best within the limitations provided  but done with the utmost safety in mind.   We also throw in tactical defensive scenarios once in a while where stages are engaged from concealment carry.   If you are interested in this type of competition shooting and would like additional information, please contact Benjamin Go at (303) 971-1009 or email him at Benjamin.r.go@.

Small game hunting

[pic] [pic]

It is a goal of the club to increase the communication between small game, waterfowl, and upland bird hunters.  Many people join the club to meet new friends and learn about this aspect of hunting but find it tough to locate partners with the current club structure.  A limited number of group hunts and either an email list or use of the club forum would increase the communication of the group.

The 2nd annual SHFC “Cast-N-Blast” on Friday October 14th will be the first (and maybe only) group hunt for 2011.  This will be a morning of waterfowl hunting followed by an afternoon of fly fishing somewhere in Park county.  This is open to new and experienced hunters alike.  If you are looking to find people to go on other hunts please plan on attending.  RSVP to david.r.harrison@ for details on the trip.

If you would like to be on the initial email list, or have ideas on what this part of the club should include and what you would like to see, email David with your ideas.

CMP NEWS

DONATION INFORMATION (provided by David Potter):

The CMP program is no longer funded by the military and with the upcoming cuts it may be on the list.

For those that donate to the United Way you can designate your donation to go to the Civilian Marksmanship Program as discussed in this link:

• In step 3 of the donation form, in the place for Agency name - write "Civilian Marksmanship Program." The address is 1401 Commerce Blvd., Anniston AL 36207.

Or you can donate directly to the CMP:

• Checks should be made out to CMP Donations, 1470 Sentinel Drive, Anniston AL, 36207.

The Skyline Hunting and Fishing club is an affiliated member with the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and, as such, is privilege to such benefits as direct purchase of surplus US military rifles, surplus ammunition, and competition shooting accessories.

The History of the CMP dates back to 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt, and Federal legislation, enacted by the US Congress, established the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice to foster improved marksmanship among military personnel and civilians. President Roosevelt had considerable vision into what might lie ahead in the future of the United States in the creation of the CMP. The commissioning of a new service rifle from the Springfield Arsenal [The M1903 Springfield, and its new .30-06 cartridge, became the standard by which every service rifle and military ammunition would be judged and holds true even to this day], and the commissioning of naval forces which were needed to supply the allies some 11 years later as Europe erupted into what became known as “The Great War” to which the US entered in 1917.

Until 1996 the CMP was administered by the US Army Office of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) at which time it became a federally chartered corporation known as The Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety (CPRPFS) by act of Congress under title 36 of the US code of Federal regulations which now administers the CMP.

So, what does all this mean to SHFC members?

As an affiliated club with the CMP, the club and its members can purchase, directly from CMP, “retired” military rifles (no handguns) which the US government has declared surplus and which are transferred to the CMP for distribution. For history buffs and collectors, these firearms represent a tangible history of our nations rise to a democratic world power and how we used that power to defeat those nations which would choose to conquer, occupy, and enslave other peoples throughout Europe and Asia.

The CMP, in carrying out its Congressional mandate, holds the National Matches at Camp Perry in Ohio every year which are open to any civilian who wishes to participate. There are many categories of marksmanship competitions both for service rifle and service pistol, for which marksmanship awards are presented to the top competitors.

At SHFC, we hold service rifle and match rifle competitions, based on the CMP competition rules, every “off” Friday. In addition, several “off” Fridays are designated as Vintage Service Rifle matches where participants will compete with their M1903’s, M1 Garands, and foreign vintage service rifles.

Corey Kroll, corey.kroll@, is the SHFC coordinator and club liaison with the CMP and can help any member who wishes to make a purchase work through the paperwork. For any questions regarding our affiliation, CMP competitions, or how to go about making a purchase, Corey can be contacted at 303-977-5507.

The website for the CMP is .

Gibson Guitar to Uncle Sam – “From my cold, dead hands”, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, August 31, 2011

Last week, heavily armed federal agents raided two guitar manufacturing facilities in Tennessee owned by Gibson — one in Nashville, another in Memphis. The feds were not acting on a tip that an al Qaeda cell was holed up in the buildings; or that Mexican drug cartel gangs were lurking inside. It was actually something far more serious; far more serious, that is, to a bunch of federal bureaucrats with nothing better to do.

How to Deal with a Stop and Frisk, , August 31, 2011

As a cop working in a state where “bundling up” means wearing a thin sweater twice a year, detecting a concealed carry weapon is about as difficult as finding a Glock fan at an AR convention. Needless to say, I’ve been trained to stop and frisk actual and potential perps quickly, efficiently, legally and politely. I also know that there are plenty of legal concealed carry license holders who’ve never been the subject of a “Terry stop.”
