Gomez is stubbornly of the mind set that all criminals are similarly motivated and that “criminals want the shortest distance between two points.” Gomez seems to write to the general public and fellow law enforcement officials in order to dispel the myth that the causes of crime are complex and sometimes justifiable. He argues that all decision we make are the result of a careful cost-benefit analysis. Basically, if we think the personal benefit of an act will outweigh the negative, we’ll do this. Gomez’s article will function as a detailed representation of this so-called “classical” view of crime. Contextualize (one ?)- Explain how you’ll use this source in your research paper.- (Optional) direct quote I will use Gomez’s text as a point of comparison and contrast for the more nuanced explanations of criminal motivation throughout the paper. It will be easy to return to him as his argument is relatively simple and can act as the default explanation: “criminals want the shortest distance between two points.” Each time, I’ll say, “well, maybe not.” In doing so, I’ll be able to generate more thought. Also, there may be times, perhaps many times, when the classical view is right. I want to examine when crimes are deliberate versus times when their motivations are emotional or irrational. Souotes:- About 5 quotes-One explanation of how you intend use the quote1. Gomez informs us of the clarity achieved through the classical view of criminology: “Following a doctrine of "psychological hedonism", the classical approach holds that people choose freely among alternatives of behavior. In this view, the perpetrator plans his or her criminal behavior before carrying out his or her actions.” How will I use this quote in my paper? I’ll likely disagree with this statement because of all the many examples of unplanned crime, such as crimes of passion that develop quickly within highly emotional situations. 2. Gomez refuses to take a multi-dimensional look at crime when he states that, “No one is excused regardless of age, mentality, social or economic status, political influence or other self-indulgent conditions. People are held in absolute accountability to the actions they choose.” How will I use this quote in my paper? I’ll qualify this statement because while there are similar causes to all crimes, they are not identical; therefore, they should be handled differently.3. Gomez provides an incomplete list of motivations for crime: “The motivation to commit acts of criminal behavior relate to basic internal desires of control, dominance, anger, revenge and display of personally perceived inadequacy.” How will I use this quote in my paper? I’ll qualify this list because it’s incomplete. I don’t think we have to call hunger a “basic desire of control.” If I need to feed my family, I’m going to do whatever it takes to do so. 4. . . .
