Periodic Table

Atoms are organized in the periodic table according to certain patterns in their properties.

Atomic #: at the top of each element's square in the periodic table, it tells us the # of protons the element has.

# of protons (positive) = # of electrons (negative)

Symbol: letter which represents the element.

Periodic Table Part 1

Def: is a visual representation which organizes the elements by chemical and physical properties.

Group or Family: The elements which are in the same group form a vertical column (up/down).

These elements have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of valence electrons ( which is why they are grouped together)

Group # = # of valence electrons

Valence electrons: number of electrons on the outer most energy level (last orbit).

Periods, orbits, energy shells or energy levels:

Group elements together horizontally (left to right). They are grouped together because all the elements in the period use the same number of orbits (# of energy levels) Period # = # of energy levels (orbits/ shells)

Metals, nonmetals and metalloids:

Elements are also divided by a staircase on the periodic table.

Metals

Nonmetals

Metalloids

left of the stair case

metallic luster (shiny)

conducts heat

conducts electricity

Right of stair case

almost surround the

Found in 3 states of staircase

malleable (bends)

matter (solid, liquid, gas) characteristics of both

ductile (shape into wires) Opposite properties of metals and nonmetals

soft very reactive when

metals (ex. not good conductors)

ex: might be malleable, but does not conduct

placed in water and acid do not conduct heat or

high melting point

electricity

(excludes H)

Specific Family or Group Names

September 10, 2019

Group 1A Alkali metals

Group 2A

Alkaline earth metals

Group 7A Halogen

Group 8A Noble or inert gas

has all characteristics of metals

most reactive

family because has

only 1 ve

same as alkali

as you go down metals

the family element becomes more reactive

less reactive than alkali metals because has 2 ve

H is not part of

the family, put

there because

has 1 ve

soft

react with air and water so must be stored in oil

same characteristics as nonmetals

becomes more reactive as you go up the family

halogen + metal = salt (NaCl)

used as antiseptics (chlorine)

have 7 ve

if electricity is passed through them a bright light is produced

He placed there even though does not have 8 ve because its orbit is full at 2 ve

has full and stable orbits and therefore completely unreactive

*Families 36 group names are named after the first element in the group. Ex Group 3 is called the boron group.

Elements vs compounds

Groups 17 are always found as compounds, not as elements in everyday use. Metals and nonmetals will chemically bond and form a compound. Once the elements bond, a stable compound is formed.

Group 8 is always found as an element, never as a compound. This is because their orbits are already full and stable.
