7. Name three ways in which Shirley Jackson foreshadows the surprise twist at the end of the story. What tips you off that there is no Charles in the kindergarten class?

a- When Laurie’s mom first asks about “Charles,” Laurie has to stop and think.

b- Laurie behaves like Charles throughout the story as he interacts with his parents. Ex. “Hey, Pop, ya’old dust mop!”

c- It is unlikely that an entire class would stay behind to watch one student have detention.
