Course Description

In this course, students will be learning about applying mathematic concepts to concrete and abstract situations. Eighth grade is an important developmental period because students are establishing a foundation of many math concepts that will be used throughout middle school, high school, and later in life. In eighth grade mathematics, the curriculum emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills and strategies and builds the foundation of Algebra.

Grading

The breakdown of a student’s average grade will be determined as follows:

❖ Daily Grades: Classwork, Homework, Quizzes, Notebook Checks, Discussions, and Daily Participation – 50%

❖ Major Grades: Tests and Projects 50%

A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), F (0-69)

Participation

Participation will be based on positive contributions to classroom activities as well as bringing in your supplies. Active participation is asking appropriate questions, giving answers respectfully, contributing to discussions and team work skills. Students may lose participation points due to disruptive behavior, tardiness, and inattentiveness.

Classwork

Students are expected to complete and turn in classwork when assigned. As the teacher, I will be actively monitoring students in order to make sure students are on task but also to be there if any students have questions.

Late Work

Assignments (including homework) are expected to be turned in by the due date. All classwork/homework assignments not turned in when due are considered late and will lose five (5) points everyday it is not turned in, for up to three days. Per FBISD Policy, after 3 days the student will receive a zero for the assignment. The only exception is if the student is absent. Homework that is not brought to class the period the student has math will be considered late even if turned in later in the day.

Cheating and Plagiarism

Any student who is found to be cheating on an independent assignment, guilty of plagiarism, and/or any types of deception to get credit will result in a 0 for that assignment. The parent/guardian of the student may be contacted. Just don’t do it!

Grading

Homework: Students will be assigned homework almost every day for reinforcement of mathematical topics being discussed. It is very rare that homework will not be assigned. Homework should have the student’s name and period. Work must be shown and completed in PENCIL. Work done in pen is unacceptable. Please note that, as a general rule, late homework is strongly discouraged in my class. Each math lesson builds on the previous lesson so it is imperative that homework be turned in on time so I can address any problems a student might be having before moving too far ahead into the lessons.

Extra Credit: There MAY be opportunities for extra credit in my classroom. I will let students know what the extra credit is and when it is due. Extra credit will not be accepted after the due date. Students cannot request extra credit individually as extra credit will only be offered to the whole class.

Tests/Quizzes: If a student makes less than a 75% on a test, they will need to complete the in-class re-teach and complete test corrections in order to get a grade change. Additionally, students who make less than a passing grade of 70% require a parent signature. Students who make less than a 100% can complete test corrections to receive half (1/2) credit back on each question. Quiz grades cannot be made up as they are daily grades not major grades.

Absences & Tardies

Regular attendance at school is extremely important! Please do what you can to be at school every day. Any missed work because of an absence will have one day per absence to be made up. For extended absences, parents need to contact me or call the front office and arrange to pick up missed work. If a test is missed due to an absence from class, the student will need to make arrangements with me to re-test. A student is tardy if they are not inside the classroom when the bell rings. PARENTS: please notify me at least 48 hours IN ADVANCE of upcoming doctor appointments, dentist appointments, etc, so I can be sure your student has the work they need if they miss my class.

Classroom Expectations

Each day students are expected to:

1. Be in their seat when the bell rings, completing the warm-up activity.

➢ Being on time to class means your child is less likely to miss important information.

2. Have their homework out, ready to go over it

➢ Each student will need to have a red pen out at the start of class.

3. Come to class prepared EVERYDAY!

➢ Materials include homework, sharpened pencils/mechanical pencil, their planner, math notebook, and a binder with a zipper pouch of supplies.

4. Be respectful and polite to other students and teachers.

➢ I expect every student to show me and their peers respect. In return I will show my students the respect they deserve.

Students are expected to follow all school rules, classroom expectations, and procedures every day. If they don’t, the following actions will be taken:

❖ Nonverbal/Verbal warning

❖ Students will conference with the teacher

❖ Parent will be contacted

Home communication: I like to keep open communication between parents. Contact me at any time for any reason. My preferred contact is through e-mail. If you would prefer to call, please do. I will return your call in a timely fashion.
