Mission Statement

The mission of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary is to equip leaders to fulfill the Great Commission and the Great Commandments through the local church and its ministries.

Course Purpose

This course is the second in a series of four three-semester hour courses that address important issues in church planting. Current courses include Fund Raising and Spiritual Warfare. Future courses (pending approval) will include Making Disciples through Small Groups, and Developing a Church Planting Strategy in Southern Baptist Associations.

This course continues the themes of identifying, surveying, explaining, experiencing, integrating, valuing, and developing skills in areas that are strategic to the art and science of church planting. The focus of attention in this course is on the barrier to disciple-making, the work of God’s enemy. A growing awareness of cosmic-level spiritual warfare has emerged in recent years as an important component of evangelical Christian understanding and ministry. This course investigates both theoretical and practical dimensions of spiritual engagement.

Course Description

This course is designed to assist learners in spiritual transformation through an examination of the spiritual warfare faced by followers of Christ. Attention is given to biblical, historical, and contemporary perspectives on spiritual conflict. Emphasis is placed on helping learners discover tools and processes that will prepare them to recognize the enemy’s work and, when necessary, appropriately engage him with the power of Christ.

Student Learning Objectives

Students completing this course should be able to:

1. Recognize major biblical texts and historical perspectives on spiritual warfare.

2. Develop a personal strategy to keep the enemy from gaining a foothold in the student’s life.

3. Dialog with leaders who address spiritual conflict as a part of their disciple-making ministries.

4. Explore, experience, and reflect on a system designed to assist in the experience of freedom in Christ.

5. Compare and contrast selected resources available for today’s church or ministry addressing spiritual warfare and the experience of freedom in Christ.

6. Discern the role of the enemy in establishing barriers to evangelism.

7. Comprehend and present a synthesis of current Baptist thought on spiritual warfare by engaging each other in critical reflection of presentations.

Course Teaching Methodology

Methodology will include faculty and student presentations, sub-group simulation exercises, dialog on readings, research, interviews, guest presenters, and reflection papers.

Textbooks

Neil T. Anderson, The Steps to Freedom in Christ (this is the 23-page paperback workbook)

Francis Frangipane, The Three Battlegrounds

Ed Murphy, The Handbook for Spiritual Warfare

Course Requirements

1. Class Communicators and Participation. Submit one Class Communicator per week as an avenue for questions and to give the professor feedback on material presented in class. Participate in all class presentations and discussions.

2. Service Project. Participate in seminary-wide service project to help rebuild New Orleans on August 29. Witness to at least one nonbeliever on the same day and submit a personal evangelism report. Service project involves cleaning or rebuilding a house for a half day.

3. Sub-Group. Participate in a class sub-group that explores the topic of spiritual warfare devotionally, using Anderson’s workbook. Start by Aug 30, end by Dec 5.

4. Interview. Identify churches or ministries that address spiritual warfare as a part of their strategy, interview a key leader, and present a 1-2 page summary paper to the class for review and discussion. (Church or ministry may be local, regional, or national.) All students must present findings by Oct 11.

5. Meeting. Schedule 30-minute meeting with Dr. Allen. Student will: “Take ten minutes to tell me what you hope to gain from this class.” Balance of time discussing student’s response. Schedule and complete meetings no later than Sept 6.

6. Book Reviews. Submit a 1-page review on the Frangipane and Murphy books, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, parenthetical citations, 30% content, 70% critique. DUE Oct 25.

7. Bibliography. Prepare an annotated bibliography of at least 20 resources (books, magazines, web sites, recordings) that equip Christians for spiritual warfare. Resources should reflect student’s vocational ministry direction (for example, youth pastors identify resources that address spiritual warfare in the lives of teenagers). The resources will be reviewed in class, collected, and reproduced for all course participants. DUE Nov 6.

8. Retreat. Complete The Steps to Freedom in Christ workbook in a personal retreat near the end of the semester. Retreat should last a day--select a location that minimizes interruptions. Submit 7-page reflection paper (first person) reviewing process, struggles, personal discoveries, and describing follow-through plan. Submit papers to Dr. Allen, not to the grader. Papers will only be returned to the student in person. DUE: Nov 29.

9. Final Exam. A final exam is tentatively scheduled for 8:00-10:00AM, Thurs., Dec. 13.

Evaluation of the Student’s Work

Dr. Allen assigns letter grades per the NOBTS course catalog. Should a student’s final numerical grade come within a fraction of the next higher letter grade, professor may—at his discretion—consider promoting the student to the next higher grade based on his or her attitude, positive contributions to the field, and preparedness for classroom discussions. Dr. Allen reserves the right to employ a bell-curve on grade distribution.
