Bienvenidos a Thomas Johnson Middle School

Monday, October 19, 2009 Volume 7

VISION (Where are we going? Our goal):

We are committed to a culture of high expectations where all students learn to become

… caring, involved citizens of good character;

… literate, high performing scholars; and

… technologically competent life-long learners.

MISSION (What are we currently doing for students?):

The mission of Thomas Johnson Middle School is to provide a positive learning

environment that

… is safe and nurturing;

... supports intellectual, emotional, and social growth of all students; and

… fosters a good working relationship between home, school, and community

The Principal Speaks

Bienvenidos a Thomas Johnson Middle School espero trabajar con ustedes.

As the year is progressing, I want to thank our parents/guardians for their support and encouragement. It is not always easy when you are the principal and want to do what is in in the best interest of the students, which may or may not always make you popular. I appreciate the many calls and kind words of encouragement. THANK YOU! My plea, however, is for more of our parents to be proactive and come to school when there are positive opportunities for interaction. Many times I don’t see parents until there is an issue. We want you to come to the school. Perhaps, you might want to come and each lunch with your child or volunteer your services. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the school in order to comply with PGCPS policy and procedure on volunteering. We are having several activities at the school, but we really need to

see more of our parents/guardians. Research says that when a parent makes one (1) visit to the school it significantly makes a differenece in a child’s progress.

I want to re-emphasize that instruction and ensuring that your child is safe and maximizing every instructional minute is my main priority. I apologize that I am not always available to see you when you walk in the door, but please make an appointment to see me. I want to visit with our parents and talk to and with you regarding any issues or concerns you may have regarding Shugart and/or your child.

Please continue to check your child’s agenda on a DAILY basis. This will allow you to monitor his/her homework, and you can communicate with your child’s teacher.

Again, I encourage every parent/guardian to please ask your child on a DAILY basis to see his or her agenda. This will allwo you to monitor their homework, and you can communicate with your child’s teacher on a DAILY basis.

I am so extremely excited about the energy that is being put forth to ensure that Hispanic Heritage Month is a success. I encourage ALL of our parents/guardians to come out and celebrate at the fiesta.

Again, I strongly encourage you to begin preparing your child for the MSA now and not wait until test time.

THANK YOU for allowing me to be your principal!

Welcome to TJMS and welcome to success!

Dr. Robinson

Principal’s Progress

Each week, I will be posting words, phrases, and/or sentences that I am learning in Spanish. My test each week will be to see how I effectively communicate and use what I am learning. Our students will be my best teachers.

Red Ribbon Week

(See attached Flyer)

Thomas Johnson Middle School will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week during the week of October 23 – October 30, 2009. This is an opportunity for our students to participate in the various contest. The deadline for ALL contest submissions is Wednesday, October 21, 2009. The program has been scheduled for October 29, 2009. Continue to read the Jaguar Express for a specified time, as we get closer to the program date. Please come out and support the school’s effort to promote DRUG FREE mindsets, lives, and communities.

Have You Joined PTSA?

What are you Waiting On?

Get Involved In “OUR” School TODAY!

This is another way that our parents can be active participants in the lives of “our” children.

MSA Parent Breakfast Meeting [pic]

In an effort to assist our parents/guardians with their child’s success on MSA, we will be having an MSA Parent Breakfast meeting. When parents leave the meeting, they will leave with strategies and helpful tips in helping their child at home. The meeting will be held at Thomas Johnson Middle School on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. We hope to see you there. There will also be a continental breakfast.

Real Men Read – Real Men Talk

We are calling all men to participate in our first annual Real Men Read – Real Men Talk that will be held here at Thomas Johnson Middle School on Friday, November 20, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. The school will provide some of the books that will be read to the students, but you may have a favorite book. Due to age and content appropriateness, all books would have to be reviewed before they are read to the students. If reading isn’t your thing, you might enjoy having small group sessions with our boys and, in some cases, girls. In the spring, we will have Real Women Read – Real Women Talk. Perhaps you are not reading a book, but maybe an excerpt from a book that you would like to use to illustrate a point of discussion. We need you! Please respond.

Parent/Guardian Contact Information – A MUST HAVE

As a parent:

• What would you like for the school to do if something happens to your child at school and we cannot contact you?

• What would you like for the school to do when your child is not meeting standards in the classroom and the teachers have no other options?

• How would you like for your child’s teacher to proceed when he/she cannot reach you to discuss the matter?

• Who do we call and give praise about your child’s day when we cannot reach you?

Parent communication is extremely important! We need your contact information. Please help.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Student Activity Opportunities at Thomas Johnson Middle School

⇨ Students interested in applying to participate in National Jr. Honor Society, please see Ms. Groover this week for information.

Lunch News [pic]

Please continue to read each week’s issue of Jaguar Express regarding updates and information regarding our breakfast and lunch programs. We encourage parents to allow their child to eat breakfast and lunch in our Jaguar Café. Next month is National School Lunch Month.

Citations

As a way to keep students’ discipline at a minimum, Thomas Johnson will be implementing citations, which is basically a warning ticket that students will receive when they are in violation of school-wide and/or classroom expectations. Please always sign the citation and return it to your child’s teacher the next day. Receiving a citation will help your child not to receive a referral. However, once they receive a specified number a referral may be the next result.

P.E. Uniforms and Dressing Out

It is important that students dress out for P.E. because it is a state mandate that students take P.E. and comply with the expectations. Please ensure that your child has a P.E. uniform (royal blue or navy blue shorts, a white T-shirt, plain black or plain white socks, and plain black or white tennis shoes that do not have roller blades under the sole.

Uniform Reminders [pic]

Our boys and girls look so nice in their uniforms. It has really helped tremendously with having students in uniform shirts by grade level. This truly makes it easier to maintain effective discipline and school management. THANK YOU to our parents/guardians.

REMINDERS:

Shirts: 7th grade royal blue polo shirt with collar

8th grade yellow (NOT GOLD) polo shirts with collar

Pants or Shorts: - No cargo pants OR cargo shorts

- Pants cannot be cut at the seam

- Khaki colored pants only (shorts must be

khaki as well)

Shoes: Plain solid black tennis shoes.

Please do not allow your child to wear tennis shoes that

do not meet the school’s dress code.

Belts: It is NOT an option for girls or boys NOT to wear a

belt. All students (girls and boys) must wear a belt; all

students must tuck their shirts inside of their pants.

Belts are to be SOLID BLACK ONLY.

Jewelry: Students are NOT allowed to wear chains and

necklaces to school. Earrings cannot be larger than a

dime. Students can wear one (1) bracelet and one (1)

Arrival Time and Early Check-Outs

Students should not be on the campus prior to 8:30 a.m. There is no supervision for those students who are brought to the school and dropped off prior to 8:30 a.m. The school is not responsible for students who are dropped off prior to 8:30 a.m. Students must be in class by 9:00 a.m. At 9:01 a.m., students are late and a tardy slip will be issued.

Please remember that students must be checked-out prior to 3:00 p.m. for early dismissal. It is important that students maximize every minute of instructional time.

For every 3 tardies and/or 3 check-outs (early dismissal) or the combination thereof, it is equal to one (1) absence.

Character Writing [pic]

E

ach month, students will be able to write a short, brief but concise response to the character expectation for each month. Participating students whose writing is selected by the counselors will be recognized at the Jaguar Award Assembly. Students can pick up the writing entry form from the student table located in the main hallway by the locker area. Once completed, students can drop their entry in the box provided on the table. We encourage students to participate!

A Note about Discipline [pic]

Parents/Guardians, we reach out to you each week for support. In many cases, we are getting support. In other cases, we are not. We cannot make excuses and support when our scholars make bad choices. They must understand that there are consequences for their actions. The school cannot do it alone. We must work as a partnership. Students and/or parents/guardians, in some cases, may not agree with the expectations of Thomas Johnson Middle School. However, we ask that the expectations be supported and maintained. We are striving for a culture change, and we are doing well. Thanks!!!!

Media News [pic]

Are you ready to start a research project?

STEP ONE: TASK DEFINITION (Define the information

problem. Identify information needed.)

First you must select a topic to research. If you select a general topic such as a presidents of the United States or state history, then your next step would be to narrow your topic. This can be a lot of fun, but sometimes it is hard to begin.

1. Do some thinking , reading, browsing and hunting…

2. Go to the library. Search the Internet, explore your

topic in encyclopedia, and browse the book shelves

in the library.

3. Ask other people for suggestions.

4. Once you have narrowed your topic, you have to

make sure that it is of interest to you. Make sure you

will be able to fine information about it. If you

select a topic that is not interesting to you or cannot

find enough information, then research become a

difficult task for you rather than FUN.

Whenever you start a research project, The KEY question to ask is; what do I already know and what do I need to know? When you ask this question over and over, the answers will help you through your research.

A good strategy to answer this question is to list questions to answer about your project. These questions are: who, what, when, where, why and how.

BOOK FAIR! BOOK FAIR! BOOK FAIR!

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a great success! Every scholar in every class had an opportunity to visit the “book fair”. We had some awesome books and cool stuff which caught the interest of our students.

Our deepest appreciation to our parents; Mrs. Tamitha Epps, Mrs. Duval, Mrs. Wall for their help and support. Thanks Ms. Dedra Williams, library aid, and Andrew Naithram, student for their assistance. Because of the help and support of these individuals, our book fair was managed extremely well. Thanks to all of the teachers for bringing their students. Thanks to the students, parents, and teachers who made purchases at the book fair and contributions to the “One for Books”.

The next Scholastic Book Fair will be held April 26 – 30, 2010. So begin “squirreling” those loose coins and dollars. Students, if you start saving $1.00 per day, you can save at least$182.00 in time for the next book fair. Think about it. You will be ready to purchase items you like the day of your visit to the book fair!

LIBRARY ORIENTATION RESUMES OCTOBER 13, 2009

It is the goal of the library media center program to support, enrich and stimulate the learning environment at Thomas Johnson Middle School. Principal’s Book-of-the-Month (Students)

Each month, students will be reading a new book. This month, my selection is We Beat the Streets by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt. I cannot wait to read the responses that students write once they have completed the book.

Principal’s Book-of-the-Year (Parents)

Just as I have selected a book-of-the-month for the students, I have selected the book-of-the-year for the parents. I am excited about starting a book club for our parents. We will meet four times this year to discuss the book. It is one that I know will truly help our parents/guardians. The book is entitled Ten Steps to Helping Your Child Succeed (ISBN# 1-880463-50-4) by Mychal Wynn. You may purchase a copy of the book from any book store, or you may purchase it online. I have had the profound pleasure of meeting and communicating with Mr. Wynn, and I know that our parents/guardians will enjoy reading the book as much as I have. Our first book club meeting is Thursday, October 22, 2009, at 6:30 p.m.

In an effort to increase math scores on MSA and participation in math classes, TJMS will do a Problem-of-the-Week. Each week, students can go to the student table in the main hallway near the locker area and pick up a problem of the week form. Once it is completed, students can drop their slip in the box provided on the table. We strongly encourage students to participate. Students who do participate will be eligible to have their name in a drawing at the Student of the Month (SOTM) program. At the end of each nine weeks, students who are CONSISTENT and respond CORRECTLY will be eligible to be recognized at the Jaguar Award Assembly, which will be held quarterly.

See the attached for the problem of the week for your grade level.

Thomas Johnson Middle School Teacher-of-the-Month

She is always smiling and lending a helping hand to anyone who is need. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know here. She prides herself on the accomplishments that her department (Language Arts) is making, as the work together to foster a true team within the school and among staff. Truly student achievement is her number one priority. Thomas Johnson Middle School’s Teacher-of-the-Month for September is Ms. Rashieda Addison, seventh grade LA teacher.

Thomas Johnson Middle School Support Personnel-of-the-Month

He is always ensuring that the floors and building are impeccable. His smile and professionalism is what makes him who is each and every day. It was through his guidance and efforts, along with his team, in the absence of the former building supervisor, that the building was ready for parents and students when the doors opened on August 24, 2009. We are so proud of him and the work that he does to maintain our building. No matter what is needed or when he is needed, he will stop what he is doing to ensure that your request is honored. Thomas Johnson Middle School’s Support Personnel-of- the-Month is Mr. Troy Butler, building engineer.

[pic] We want to thank the parents/guardians of these students for supporting our America’s Choice initiative and also promoting reading. Scholars are asked to achieve 12 books by the next students of the month program (date forthcoming).

The Crystal Ball – The Principal’s Ball

[pic]

Dancing – Food – Prizes – Fun – Socializing

On Friday, December 4, 2009, from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Thomas Johnson Middle School will have its first annual Crystal Ball. This year’s theme is Accomplishing Your Dreams, as we continue to celebrate our President, Barack H. Obama. This ball is a part of our Principal’s Book-of-the-Month, which the school does in conjunction with our America’s Choice initiative.

Students are selected based on their school performance, participation, character, and behavior. They are also recommended by the administration to participate in this memorable experience. The cost for students to attend is $100.00 in Jaguar Bucks and $10.00 in actual REAL money. Money will be collected in the form of cash or money made out to the school in the exact amount. Students can earn bucks by exhibiting good behavior, great performance in school, and demonstrating good citizenship. At the end of October, students who are interested will receive their invitation.

Students attending the ball must adhere to the dress code:

Girls: Girls may wear an appropriate ball gown, which is not revealing of body parts and/or skin. OR, girls may wear a nice dress that is appropriate for the affair. Jewelry should be kept to a minimum, as the same policy for earrings will apply for the attire for the ball. Dress shoes must be worn, as tennis shoes cannot be worn.

Boys: Boys that attend the ball must be in a complete suit and tie or may wear a dress jacket, dress slacks, a belt, and a tie. Boys must wear dress shoes for this occasion, as tennis shoes will not be accepted. The earring policy specified during the school day will also apply to the ball.

We want students to recognize that this affair will be a grand one. It is appropriate that the attire be worn. This will also be a night for our students to shine, as they walk on the red carpet to this unforgettable affair.
