UCSD’s Tony Yaksh Awarded the 2008 John J, Bonica Distinguished lecture award

Tony Yaksh, Professor in Anesthesiology and Pharmacology, received the 2008 John J, Bonica Distinguished lecture award.  This award, the most prestigious given by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), is presented every three years to an individual "in recognition of their major contribution to pain research or therapy."

The award cited Dr. Yaksh for his seminal contributions on the mechanisms of spinal pain transmission, which has led to "an explosion of studies and to an advancement of how local processing of noxious throughput occurs in the spinal cord.  From an IASP perspective it is significant that that while Tony Yaksh is not a clinician, his preclinical and basic studies have had a huge impact upon clinical practice"
