Using Layer Masks. Click on the layer you want to manipulate. There must be a different layer underneath this layer. Add a layer mask (click the 2nd icon from the left on the bottom of the layers palette…it looks like a rectangle with a circle inside). Click on the layer mask (the white rectangle that appears on the layer you selected). ................
