AP Biology Children's Book Project
One way to truly learn a subject is to teach it to someone who knows nothing about the topic. This first requires you to closely examine the subject and distill it down to its important concepts and then you need to develop simple ways to explain those concepts, using metaphors, analogies or simple models.
Your Assignment: 1. Choose one concept or topic in biology and develop a 10-15 page book teaching young children ages 3-7 (preschool to 2nd grade) about that topic. 2. The book needs to include both words and illustrations. 3. Think about how to make your topic interesting to kids. 4. You may use a variety of media: drawings, photos, cartoons, paint, crayons, etc. 5. You may work by yourself or with partners (maximum of 3 in group)
Possible topics or concepts: ? macromolecules (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids) ? biochemistry and enzymes (chemical bonds, synthesis, chemical reactions) ? cell structure and function (nucleus, lysosomes, ribosomes, Golgi bodies) ? cell processes (cell respiration, photosynthesis, cell division) ? genetics and biotechnology (Mendel, DNA, fruit fly experiments) ? evolution (Darwin, genetic drift, artificial selection, fossil evidence) ? ecology and populations (biosphere, community interactions, animal behavior) ? organisms and body systems (plants and animals, digestion, respiration)
Information to consider during writing: ? age range of reader (3-4? 4-5? 5-6? 6-7?) ? purpose, setting, plot, dialogue, action sequences, ending ? show-not-tell; use examples or metaphors to describe the action or process ? appropriate vocabulary; use proper grammar and spelling (no contractions, LOLs)
Task
? choose topic ? storyboard check ? first draft check ? book completion ? presentations
