SzudyDate: 1.2019JOB SUMMARYUnder the supervision of the MSC Nurse Manager, in conjunction with the Administrative Director, the RN – Pre/Post Surgery provides highly skilled nursing care in various stages of the patient’s perioperative experience through continual assessment, planning, and evaluation of changing patient care needs.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESEssential Pre-OpPerform physical assessment at time of admission to surgery center.Review chart, labs, EKG, verify patient identification and appropriate consent for surgical procedure.Alert anesthesia of results of labs, physical assessment, or special needs of individual with medical problems noted at time of admission.Phase I Admit and accurately assess the patient’s post-op condition upon arrival in recovery, from the O.R. Obtain knowledge of patient status by verbal report, physical assessment, and by reviewing the patient’s anesthesia history form and/or physician’s history and physical form.Discharge the patient to Phase II Recovery in accordance with written surgery center protocol and criteria.Phase IIUpon admission to Phase II Recovery, perform physical assessment pertinent to surgical procedure for baseline status by the following methods:chart reviewed for patient history and physician orders; assess P.O. status and treat accordingly, assess pain and treat accordingly; assess patient’s level of understanding for teaching purposes;assess ambulation and teach appropriate use of devices as ordered;assess voiding.Notify physician of pt. complications as RN deems necessaryComplete discharge procedure safely, providing proper post-operative instruction and assist patient to vehicle.General DutiesAdheres to MSC Universal Protocol.Report and document incidents according to procedure utilizing proper forms and QI indicator.Demonstrate knowledge of the center’s policies, procedures and safety plans. Contribute to the goals of the center and support the center’s philosophies. Demonstrate flexibility in performance of patient care tasks to achieve timely, responsive, cost effective and high quality care. Demonstrates flexibility in performance to achieve the center’s goals.Accept responsibility for own professional growth and continued education.Demonstrate high quality customer service to our patients, their families, physicians and each other.Respect the confidentiality of the patient.Participate in performance improvement of peers through the use of written commendations, anecdotal notes and communication of related information.Demonstrate the desire and ability to function as team leader in the absence of the Nurse Manager.Participate in direct patient care, as well as the indirect functions, as needed. Supervise patient’s care, delegating specific tasks to subordinates according to patient needs, and ensure all care requirements for assigned patients are accomplished. Adheres to MSC Pledge of Service Excellence and actions reflect respect for patients, families and all health team members.Relieve other nurses for breaks and lunch as needed and/or assigned by Nurse Manager. Assist doctors as requested or assigned.When own duties are completed, voluntarily help in other areas as needed. Willingly accept additional duties and assignmentsServe as preceptor/participates in unit teaching and orientation program for all new staff. Assist with the orientation of new personnel and the supervision of new personnel and ancillary municate effectively, conscientiously and frequently with all team members to share information and independently solve problems in a positive, results oriented manner.Coordinate and promote continuity of patient care through clear communication and harmonious working relationships.Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedure to answer patient questions and give appropriate discharge instructions.Demonstrate knowledge of therapeutic effects, interaction of medication, anesthesia techniques and agents and reversal agents. Demonstrate knowledge of current trends and practices in the recovery room and ambulatory surgery areasDemonstrate ability to immediately recognize and institute treatment for the following emergency/life threatening situations: cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, airway obstruction, respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, vagal response, syncope, shock, toxic overdose of local anesthesia, hypertension, hypotension, and malignant hyperthermia.Provide instruction and emotional support to patient, family, and significant other.Administer medications in accordance with surgery center policy.Document route, site, dosage, time and physician of all medications given. Document reason and effect of PRN municate appropriate information to surgeons and anesthesiologists concerning patient care.Demonstrate competency in delivery of conscious sedation. Monitor and document physiological status of patient during procedures.Safely carry out physicians orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.Restock area at the end of each day, and count and verify narcotics with another plete patient charting in an accurate, concise, and timely manner.Demonstrate ability to prioritize patient needs.Maintain a quiet, safe environment.Utilize material, equipment and time in a safe, therapeutic and cost efficient manner.Provide total nursing care of patients, delegating duties to the appropriate team members.Ensure that the care requirements of patients are accomplished through use of the nursing process including pre-assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.Maintain and apply the scientific knowledge relevant to the care requirements of the patient with consideration of age specific and developmental needs.Demonstrate the ability to respond appropriately in an emergency situation.
