Peekskill High SchoolMs. SobralAdvanced Physics Course Information SheetSchool Year 2019-2020Physics ?????This is an introductory physics course for those students planning to pursue a technical major in college such as chemistry, physics, engineering, or medicine. Throughout this course you will gain an understanding and appreciation of the world around you, as it behaves in seemingly strange and mysterious ways. With careful observations, a bit of curiosity and some deductive reasoning, many of these phenomena can be explained and understood. This should make for a challenging and rewarding experience. In the next ten months we will discuss many important physics topics such as motion, forces, energy, electricity, magnetism, waves, and the quantum theory with strong emphasis on both theoretical concepts and problem-solving. Extensive use of mathematics is made, including the quadratic formula, interpreting graphs, simultaneous equations, the Pythagorean Theorem, trigonometry, scientific notation, and other math skills. Each subject area will include theory, demonstrations, and laboratory experiments. In June, you will take the Final Local Exam and the Physics Regents Exam to receive honors credit. Also, since this course will cover some additional physics topics addressed on the Physics SAT, you may consider to take the SAT subject test Physics in June.TextPhysics: Principles and Problems by ZizewitzMaterials ???A three ring binder, loose-leaf paper, pen, pencil, ruler, protractor, graph paper, and a scientific calculator.Physics Grading PolicyFinal grade will be calculated using the following formula0.225 (1st quarter) + 0.225(2nd quarter) + 0.225 (3rd quarter) + 0.225 (4th quarter) + 0.10 (final exam)Quarter grades will be calculated using the following percentagesTests /Quizzes 60% ?Labs 20% ???Classwork 10% Homework 10%TestsTests will be announced and will be generally taken after the completion of each chapter. If you miss a test for any reason, you will take it the following day and get the current class notes from a classmate.QuizzesTwo quizzes count as one test grade. Quizzes may be given at any time and will be based on homework and/or the previous day’s class discussion.HomeworkHomework will be assigned approximately once a week. It is your responsibility to work out the problems and ask for help if you don’t understand them. The answers to the practice problems are found in the back of your textbook-appendix B. The problems are an important part of the course and an aid in understanding the material presented in class. You must include the appropriate symbols and units when answering the HW. No credit will be given for answers only. You must show the method used in solving the problem. LabsLab work is an integral part of this course in Physics since you must successfully complete 1200 minutes of lab work to be eligible to take the Physics Regents Exam and 20% of your grade will depend on your lab reports and work in the lab. If upon the completion of the lab you are unable to finish the report, it is your responsibility to complete them within a week. Labs reports not completed within a week of being performed will be considered late and received a grade 65 or less. If you are absent on the day a lab is performed in class, it is your responsibility to make arrangements with your teacher so you can make-up the lab workClass notes/WorksheetsAll students must keep notes and worksheets neatly, dated and ordered chronologically in their binders since binders might be collected once a quarter and graded as a quiz.Extra helpExtra help will be available after school during call back. You do not need an invitation.AttendanceThe attendance policy of Peekskill High School will be strictly enforced.According to Peekskill’s Comprehensive Attendance Policy, at the high school level, students are expected to attend each of their assigned classes for at least 90 % of the course. Furthermore, high school students may be denied credit for courses when, they exceed 22, in total, of unexcused absences and/or excused absences for which make-up assignments were not submitted in a timely manner.Lateness to class is unacceptable. If you come late to class twice in the same week you will receive detention (mandatory callback) and your parents will be notified about it. If you cut class, you will receive a zero for the work of that day.Your presence is essential for the successful completion of this course. Dear Parent/Guardian:The education of young people today must be a team effort involving the student, the school, and the parents/guardians. ?Please review this information about our Physics course and indicate your willingness to participate in our efforts by signing below and having your child return the bottom of this page to us. Please impress upon your child the importance of class attendance and remind him/her to make arrangements with his/her teacher to make up any missed assignments, exams, etc, due to legal absences. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 737-0201 or at dsobral@ with any questions or concerns.???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Sincerely,???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Ms. Sobral_________________ ?___________________ ??__________________ ??????????_________Parent Name ??Print ??Parent Signature ??????????Student Name ?Print ?????????????
