Leader Preparation

Lesson Guide

LEADER PREPARATION

BIBLE BASIS

It’s always amazing to realize that the Israelites took 40 years to make a journey that could have been made in about two weeks. This stubborn, stiff-necked people had many lessons to learn before they would be ready to enter the Promised Land. God, in his infinite patience and wisdom, never gave up on the Israelites but continued to provide for them and guide them, even though they continued to disappoint him. Use this session to help kids understand that their journey won’t always be an easy one but they can always trust God to be with them along the way.

DISCOVERY POINT

Have faith when you need help.

BIBLE FOCUS

Exodus 16:11-21

KEY VERSE

“I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread” (Psalm 37:25).

TEACHING PREP

The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson.

Supplies You’ll Need: Building Trust in God: Living With Faith (Year 3/Quarter 10) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 3) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, paper, markers, Bibles, pens, hand wipes or hand sanitizer, plastic spoons, marshmallows, sandwich bags, “Dear Abba” handout, “I’m Starving!” handout, graham crackers, cups of water or juice

Before This Lesson

• Print the “I’m Starving!” handout. You’ll need one half of copy per crew of four kids.

• Print the “Dear Abba” handout. You’ll need one copy per crew of four kids.

• Place 20-25 small marshmallows in a sandwich bag for each crew.

• Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): Bible, “Dear Abba” handout, “I’m Starving!” handout, pens, bag of marshmallows prepared above, and one spoon for each child.

• Review Exodus 16:11-21.

• Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on the Building Trust in God: Living With Faith (Year 3/Quarter 10) CD or (Quarter 10/Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 3) DVD.

• Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

PARENT EMAIL

We’ve provided you with a “Family Devotion” handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids’ faith multiplies.

So we’ve given you two options:

• Print the “Family Devotion” handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home.

• Email the “Family Devotion” to families before or after the actual lesson.

Or why not do both? That way you’ll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

1. Play “Into the Bible” (Track 1) from the Building Trust in God: Living With Faith (Year 3/Quarter 10) CD or (Quarter 10/Track 1) from the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 3) DVD as kids arrive.

• “Into the Bible”

Makes me wanna jump!

Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

Makes me wanna sing! Hallelujah!

It’s the greatest book.

Come and take a look.

Makes me wanna shout!

Shout! Shout! Shout! Shout!

So that everyone will see

I’m getting into the Bible

And the Bible...is getting into me!

We’re discovering a brand-new world

As we dig a little deeper (deeper),

Finding out about who God is.

Open it up and see it (see it)!

There’s nothin’ like

God’s Word, and I get

So excited.

It makes me wanna,

Makes me,

Makes me wanna jump!

Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

Makes me wanna sing! Hallelujah!

It’s the greatest book.

Come and take a look.

Makes me wanna shout!

Shout! Shout! Shout! Shout!

So that everyone will see

I’m getting into the Bible

And the Bible...is getting into me!

2. When everyone has arrived, give each person a sheet of paper and a marker.

SAY: Today we’re going to discuss what to do when we need help. On your paper, write a solution to a problem. You don’t know what the problem is; just write a solution to a problem you think of. For example, you might write something like, “Wash him completely in tomato juice,” which might be a solution if a skunk sprayed your dog. Think of any kind of solution, big or small, and write it on your paper. When you’re done, fold up your solution, and hand it to me.

3. After you’ve received all the solutions, SAY: OK…I have a couple of problems. Let’s see how well you’ve done at solving them. Read the first problem below aloud, and then read half of the solutions. Then read the other problem, and read the rest of the solutions. There will probably be a good deal of laughter.

• Problem: After putting five pieces of bubble gum in your mouth, you blew the world’s biggest bubble. Then it popped…all over your face, your hair, your clothes, and even your puppy’s fur. How might you solve this problem?

• Problem: You and your friends were playing a crazy, nighttime game of Hide and Seek. You found the best hiding spot: a blanket chest. The only problem is the latch stuck when the lid slammed shut. Now you can’t get out. How might you solve this problem?

4. ASK:

• While some of these solutions might work, why is this a bad idea for solving problems?

• What are some other solutions we might have when we have problems?

5. SAY: God knows what’s going on with us every moment of our lives, and God wants nothing more than to help us when we need him. God doesn’t want us to rely on some silly way of seeking solutions to our problems the way we just did. Instead, God wants us to seek him, and have faith when we need help.

LET’S EXPLORE!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, hand wipes or hand sanitizer, Building Trust in God: Living With Faith (Year 3/Quarter 10) CD, CD player

1. SAY: Today we’ll learn about people who needed a lot of help—they really needed to have faith because they didn’t have much else. Let’s find out what was going on with the Israelites.

2. Have kids form Bible Crews of four, and give each crew a Bible Exploration Kit. Ask crews to take the Bibles and the “Dear Abba” handouts and pens out of their kits. Help them find Exodus 16:11-21, and SAY: As you’re reading about the Israelites during their time of exile, you’ll read about a big problem they encountered. You’ll also read about God’s solution when they had faith. When you find the problem and solution, write or draw the problem they encountered under “Problem” on your handout and write or draw the solution God provided for them under “Solution.” Have the crew member who’s wearing the most blue today read the passage aloud for the crew.

After everyone has read the passage,

ASK:

• If you were providing the solution for the Israelites in this situation, what would you have done differently?

• Why was God’s solution the best solution for their problem?

3. SAY: Now, work with your crew to write about the Israelite’s problem and the solution as if what you’re writing would appear in an advice column in a newspaper. In advice columns, someone writes a letter to the advice columnist explaining the problem; the writer uses a creative nickname instead of his or her real name. Then the columnist writes a solution and publishes both the problem and solution in a newspaper so more people can learn from the situation. Point out the sample problem and solution on the handout. Allow five minutes for crews to write their columns.

4. After the crews have written their columns, have them quickly share with the group.

SAY: God wanted the Israelites to have faith when they needed help, and because of their faith, they had enough food every day. Let’s learn some more about that.

Have kids take the “I’m Starving!” handout from their Bible Exploration Kits. Provide hand wipes or hand sanitizer, and instruct crews to use the spoons and marshmallows in their Bible Exploration Kits to follow steps 1, 2, and 3.

When crews finish, have them read the Key Verse, Psalm 37:25, together.

ASK:

• What surprised you about our snack?

• What surprises you about how God provides for us?

• How has God provided what you needed at home or at school?

5. SAY: God provides for us, sometimes in ways we don’t even expect. That’s why you can have faith when you need help. Let’s see how two girls discovered how God provides. Play “Bat Shield” (Track 18) on the Building Trust in God: Living With Faith (Year 3/Quarter 10) CD,

ASK:

• When has it seemed like God wasn’t helping you when you needed it?

• What does it mean to have faith when you need help?

SAY: Have faith when you need help. That doesn’t mean that God will help you in the way you expect. The Israelites and the girls on the camping trip learned that God provides in different ways. But God will always be there to help us.

LET’S PRAISE!

Supplies: Building Trust in God: Living With Faith (Year 3/Quarter 10) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 3) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player

He gave it all

So that we could live.

He shed his blood;

He gave all that he could give,

All that he could give,

So that everyone who believes in him

Would have eternal life.

So that everyone who believes in him

Would have eternal life, eternal life.

He gave it all

So that we could live.

He shed his blood;

He gave all that he could give,

All that he could give,

So that everyone who believes in him

Would have eternal life.

So that everyone who believes in him

Would have eternal life, eternal life,

Eternal life.

So that everyone who believes in him

Would have eternal life.

So that everyone who believes in him

Would have eternal life, eternal life.

Yeah, in every part of our lives.

Since we are living, living by the Spirit,

Let us follow, follow the Spirit’s leading

In every part of our lives,

Yeah, in every part of our lives.

God has given us a path

To follow each and every day.

We will listen, and we will live it out;

Never doubt that God is leading.

Since we are living, living by the Spirit,

Let us follow, follow the Spirit’s leading

In every part of our lives,

Yeah, in every part of our lives.

Since we are living, living by the Spirit,

Let us follow, follow the Spirit’s leading

• “I Am the Resurrection and the Life” (Luke 11:25) (CD Track 7) (DVD Quarter 10/Track 7)

I am the resurrection and the life!

He who believes in me will live,

Even though he dies.

(Repeat.)

There’s no! other way to the Father.

No! other way to the Son.

No! other way to Jesus.

We must believe, we must believe,

We must believe in him alone!

I am the resurrection and the life!

He who believes in me will live,

Even though he dies.

(Repeat.)

I am the resurrection and the life!

I am the resurrection and the life!

LET’S PRAY!

Supplies: graham crackers and cups of water or juice

1. Have kids form a circle. SAY: The Israelites had faith in God when they had very little hope, and God helped them by providing exactly what they needed. What a great occasion this was to offer praise to God!

When we pray before a meal, we’re doing a very similar thing. God provides what we need—the food on our table, the homes we live in, and the many blessings he gives us every day. When we offer our mealtime prayers, we’re pausing to recognize God’s role in our daily lives.

We’re going to share a symbolic meal now. Before we share our food, let’s pray to thank God for his provision.

ASK:

• How do you pray before a meal at home?

Solicit some different ideas, and then put them all together as you pray together as a group. For example, you might all hold hands as, one at a time, kids say something they’re thankful for and then close with a memorized prayer that one child knows.

2. Invite kids to enjoy graham crackers and juice.

HIGH FIVES

Supplies: none

1. Teach kids the American Sign Language sign for help: Hold your right hand out, palm up, and rest your left fist on your right palm. Then use the right palm to lift the left fist. Point out how this sign suggests God’s help when we have faith.

2. As children leave, have them show each other the sign for help and say to each other, “We can have faith when we need help!”

FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES

Food for the Journey

Supplies: spoons; small plastic bags; and trail-mix ingredients, such as chocolate candies, raisins, pretzel sticks, and cereal, in small bowls

To remind kids of the manna God provided for the Israelites as they went on their journey, have kids make bags of trail mix to take with them and share as they share what they learned from the lesson. Set out bowls of ingredients with spoons, and let children mix them in their own plastic bags.

Mapping My Life

Supplies: paper, pencils, markers

Have kids draw simple “maps” of their lives so far. Direct them to draw pictures to show high points and low points in their lives, and have them draw a symbol of God to show when God provided for them. You might want to make your own map as a model.

Hiding It in Your Heart

Supplies: none

Give each Bible Crew a Bible. Have crews find the Key Verse, Psalm 37:25, and read it aloud. Have kids work together in their crews to make up actions to demonstrate the words abandoned and begging. Then have them think of the opposites of those words and make up simple actions for those words as well. Have crews share with the whole group.

Create a Bible Dictionary

Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Building Trust in God: Living With Faith (Year 3/Quarter 10) CD

Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today’s lesson—help and provide are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play “The Books of the Bible Song” (Track 8), from the Building Trust in God: Living With Faith (Year 3/Quarter 10) CD while kids work. Add each page to a three-ring binder, and watch the dictionary grow!
