What different types of charts and graphs are there?- Hand out Creating Charts and Graphs in Excel. Work through it with the students. This will also be a good review of searching the Internet. A few things to point out in creating charts:- You can select the range first by highlighting it, or you can create the range during the chart creation.- You can double click on different parts of the chart to change it.- When you use the Degree Symbol, the chart maker may not be able to process it. ACTIVITY: INDIVIDUAL OR SMALL GROUP (20 MIN)- Have students work on the chart creating challenge. - If there is time, students may find it interesting and fun to customize the pie chart so that the filled area looks like the corresponding surface type (the water area looks like waters). For this there may be an appropriate pattern, or searching the Internet for an image might be the way to go.ClOSING: WHOLE GROUP (5 MIN)This will probably take more time than allowed. Students should save their charts and there will be time to work on them more later in the unit or before or after class. Follow these instructions to create a chart of the weather in your area.Open Chrome and search for a 10 day forecast for your area.“Microsoft Excel”. Use the data you see to create a spreadsheet of the High Temperatures for the next 10 days. It should look something like this:When you have the spreadsheet complete, with all 10 days, we can create a graph of that data. First we need to highlight the data we want to chart. Click and drag across the data to highlight it. Go to the Insert Menu and click “Chart”:You will now have some options of how you want your chart to appear:(For this chart, you will probably want a Column chart)You will then need to give a Range for your chart to cover. If you highlighted the data earlier, then you should have the correct range. Make sure your data has a dotted line around it:Click Next. Now you can give your chart a name. You can also name the X-axis and the Y-axis. The X-axis is horizontal, and you should name it “Date”. They Y-axis is vertical and you should name it “Temperature”. Now you can click “Finish” and you will have a chart on your Spreadsheet. See if you can make it bigger and smaller. Can you move it around your screen?Double-click on the X-axis to get more formatting optionsDouble-click on the Y-axis to get more formatting optionsYou can also double-click on one of the blue lines in your chart. Double-click right here: You will get some more options:Now you can change how your chart appears. Try clicking on “Color”.Now you will have some more options of colors for your chart. Try clicking on “Fill Effects”:Notice that you can now change even more things about your chart’s appearance.A Challenge:If you have time left in class, try creating a chart for this information.Here are some percentages of what covers the Earth’s surface:Ocean: 70%Land: 25%Ice: 5%Put these numbers into a spreadsheet.Create a Pie Chart of these numbers. Spend some time formatting your pie chart to make it look the way you want it to. ................
