William Steig

BRING IMAGINATION INTO YOUR CLASSROOM

“King of Cartoons”

William Steig started his career as a comical cartoonist for The New Yorker and became a very successful children’s book writer at age 61. He produced over sixteen hundred drawings and one hundred and seventeen covers for The New Yorker. He captured his first Caldecott Medal with the book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, which was his third title written. He won over ten more awards after his first one and sold over two million books worldwide.

Steig's recipe? "I enjoyed my childhood," he told Angell in The New Yorker. "I think I like kids more than the average man does. I can relax with them, more than I can among adults . . . Children are genuine . . . I like to think that I've kept a little innocence. Probably I'm too dumb to do anything else."
