EgyptiansandRomans.Theartcaneasilybefollowedfrommedievaltimes,therenaissance,European

revivals,tomoderntimes.Thetermhastypicallybeenappliedtothewindowsofchurchesandother

significantbuildings.Thepurposeoftheglasswasnottoallowpeopletoseeoutorallowlighttocomein,

buttocontrollight,becauseofthisisoftendescribedas"illuminatedwalldecorations".Theglassistypically

flatpaneledandpresentingimagesfrombiblicalscripture.Modernglasshadbecomemore3D,andismore

apttopresentlessreligiousimages.

Ourstainedglasslessonisdesignedfor3rdand4thgraders.Inthisagegroupstudentswouldmostlikelyshow

characteristicsseeninbothstage2,"MakingSymbols,"andstage3,"Realism."SincechildrenintheMaking

Symbolsstageprimarilyusegeometricshapesratherthanrealisticones,theyshouldbeabletotearpiecesof

tissuepaperinsimilarshapes,aswellascreatingadesignfortheirstainedglass.Childreninthisagegroup

willalsobenefitfromtheexplorationofdifferenttexturesandcolorswhilecreatingtheirownstainedglass.

ThislessonisalsobeneficialforchildrenwhofallwithintheRealismstagebecausetheycanfocustheir

attentiontotheshapeanddesignoftheirstainedglass,possiblycreatingmoredifficultdesignsandvarying

fromsimplegeometricshapes.
