Dig 1940

Sunday, 3 March 2013 New Series

To mark the 70th anniversary of 1940, presenter and archaeologist Jules Hudson takes us on a journey of discovery into Britain's darkest, and

in the words of Winston Churchill 'finest hour'. In 1940, Britain was fighting for its life. Hitler's Germany was determined to invade the

British Isles, and all that stood in the way were the men and women of Britain. Now a team of experts across France and Britain are uncovering

fresh evidence of their incredible struggle. They are digging up secrets buried for 70 years, to reveal stories of heroism from Britain's most

dangerous year.

Episode One: Battle of France and Dunkirk. Jules Hudson and his team are in France digging up crashed German aircraft from the opening months

of WW2, accompanied by an RAF fighter pilot who saw action there in 1940. A Dunkirk veteran recounts the horrors of the evacuation, while 70

years later, on the beaches of Dunkirk Jules makes some revealing finds; poignant reminders from one of the hardest times in British history.

Kevin McCloud's Man Made Home

Sunday, 3 March 2013 Final

Luxury is the one thing Kevin doesn’t yet have at his handmade cabin in the woods. It's an off grid marvel, but what he really wants is a hot

tub he can relax in, sipping red wine and watching the setting sun with his friends.

He heads off to find a unique solution for his hot tub at an airfield graveyard, while waiting for his luxury alpaca wool bath robe to be made,

and fashioning a 'drop down' veranda.

At last, Kevin's wondrous cabin looks finished, so the next step is to give everyone who has helped him a house warming to remember.

Rev.

Sunday, 3 March 2013

This series sees cassock-chaser Adoha's crush on Adam (Tom Hollander) reach new heights when he inadvertently rescues her from a mugger; his

competitive streak unleashed in an interfaith football tournament; an exorcism in a nursing home; and some very special surprise cameos

stepping through the doors to St Saviour's.

From a city banker attending AA in the church who causes Adam to examine his own financial dire straits; to new elderly parishioner Joan, with

a colourful past and a haunted bedroom... Not to mention Adam's far from angelic goddaughter who comes to stay for the weekend.

In this episode Abi Johnston (Amanda Hale), a talented young curate, comes to train at St Saviour's. Lay reader Nigel is green with envy, and

even Adam's initial enthusiasm at the prospect of someone to cover his weekends off soon gives way to doubt in his own abilities as a priest

when he realises just how brilliant she is.

When Colin decides his vicar needs cheering up, Adam inadvertently gets the chance to experience religious versus chemical ecstasy.

The Agony Of Life

Wednesday, 6 March 2013

Not all of our Aunts and Uncles have children, but each of them has opinions on how children should be brought up. This episode starts with our

pundits musing on whether people should require a licence to breed, and what annoys them most about the way some parents raise their kids. Then

they'll move on to the stuff nobody tells you before you become a parent: hospitals, nappies, parties you have to organise, publics schools

versus private, phones, Facebook, and the type of friends you never want your children to bring home. And what movies, books and historic

sporting events would the Aunts and Uncles like to share with their children? And finally, given studies show that children decrease parental

happiness until they finally move out of home, do they think having children is good for them?

No stone will be left unturned as Australia's funniest and brightest take us through the most important stages of existence - from child to

adult, to creating and supporting families, to building and managing careers. And what after that? Should we sit on a hill and contemplate the

wording of our epitaph, or travel the world? The good news is we don't need to worry about that because the Aunts and Uncles will be doing the

worrying for us.

Making Couples Happy :)

Thursday, 7 March 2013 Final

Four ordinary Australian couples embark on a confronting and challenging eight week journey to happiness and relationship fulfilment.

The end of the eight weeks is in sight, but the couples still have many hurdles to overcome.

Alison apologises to Paul for an affair and reveals the true story behind it. He has to make a decision that will decide the future of their

relationship - will he forgive her or not?

After the emotional intensity of the apology, Paul takes time out with the other men, as John organises a BBQ to deliver some home truths about

the emotional differences between the sexes.

To encourage the couples to lock lips, John organises a kiss-in for charity at a central Sydney mall. Inhibitions crumble as the couples show

off their newfound sexual chemistry.

As the experiment reaches its conclusion, the couples write each other love letters, which are displayed and read in a public gallery. With all

the couples confronting their long-term future together, how have their attitudes towards each other changed? And when John gathers them for

their final scoring, how many will reach the Australian average relationship happiness level of 60?

The Midwives

Thursday, 7 March 2013

Episode four - 'How The Other Half Push' - explores the wildly contrasting experiences of the community midwives who look after mums on

opposite sides of the Wirral Peninsula near Liverpool.

On the west are million-pound houses, on the east are some of the most deprived areas in the country... In the middle is Arrowe Park Hospital.

From here, community midwives venture out to look after the mums on both sides, before and after they have their babies.

In Birkenhead, in the east, midwife Katie is cheerfully dealing with a mix of teen mums, deprivation and social service cases. In the west,

midwife Jan sees more anxious, older professional mothers who are keen to have everything done to plan.

Which of the two sides presents the greatest challenge for the midwives? And are things always so black and white? Some mums don't conform to

expectations and some things about having a baby are true wherever you come from. As midwife Katie says, "they all come out the same way don't

they?"

The Doctor Blake Mysteries: If The Shoe Fits

Friday, 8 March 2013

in a press, with his hand amputated. It's the fourth accident in nine months. Police Surgeon, Dr Lucien Blake, is furious the factory has such

a lack of safety measures and calls for its immediate closure.

The owner, local businessman Patrick Tyneman, admits there was no safety guard on the press despite Blake's previous two reports calling for it

to be added. Things get physical and Chief Superintendant Matthew Lawson has to intervene. Dr Blake leaks a story about the industrial accident

to a reporter, hoping the pressure will force Tyneman to improve safety.

Meanwhile, Blake's housekeeper, Jean Beazley, auditions for the town's play even though she knows the lead will go to the usual actress. She

rehearses and eventually succeeds in securing a part in The Importance of Being Ernest.

The deeper Dr Blake digs into the foreman's death, the more suspicious he becomes about the veil of silence between the migrants at the shoe

Dream Build

Why would you name a house ‘Flipped’?

Felicity Jansen is the owner and has the nickname Flip. Plus her new home 'flips' the layout of the original 60's house on the site.

The new house takes its style from the 1960s design which Felicity originally fell in love with. But when this became impractical for their family life it was demolished to make way for the ‘Flipped House’.

Felicity and architect Steve Koolloos have not only drawn inspiration from the 60s but also from the work of Felicity's architect father. Her father's interest in mid 20th century modernism, with its love of natural products, is reflected in the use of stone, glass, wood and concrete. Features like the carved wooden front door are a replica of the one her father designed and made for their original family home.

Having grown up surrounded by gardens, a garden was important to Felicity. This has been created with circles of concrete garden rooms which contrast with the hard-edged lines of the house itself.

Flipped House is a house which draws on the joy of 60's designs and the mid 20th century modernism style's love of natural products.

The Book Club

THE BOOK CLUB is back for 2013 and coming from the Perth Writers Festival. Host Jennifer Byrne and regulars Marieke Hardy and Jason Steger are joined on the panel by China Miéville and Shamini Flint.

The two books being reviewed are Wool by Hugh Howie and Gilgamesh by Joan London.

Wool takes place in a post-apocalyptic ruined Earth where humanity clings to survival by living underground in massive silos. Through interweaving stories, the mysteries and secrets of the silos are revealed.

This month's classic book, Gilgamesh, is the epic tale of Edith Clark, who leaves her isolated life in rural Western Australia to track down the father of her child. With the Second World War looming, Edith bravely travels across the globe, only to discover the true meaning of home.

China Miéville is a fantasy fiction author who lives and works in London. He is three-time winner of the prestigious Arthur C. Clarke Award for science fiction and has also won the British Fantasy Award twice.

Shamini Flint is a highly successful children's author based in Singapore. She writes children's books with cultural and environmental themes which are mainly focused on Asia.

Catalyst: On The Road

Coorong Wetlands. Where the Murray River arrives at the coast in South Australia, the wetlands of the Lower Lakes and Coorong are a critical refuge for an array of local and migratory birds. During the decade-long drought, however, the region ran dry - bird numbers plummeted, fish could no longer swim in the muddy waters, and the soil turned acidic. There were fears the lakes would never recover. But, in the latter half of 2010 rain returned to the region. From the surface, the Coorong now looks like a healthy system. Over 170,000 waterbirds visited the lakes in January 2012. But researchers aren't so comfortable. Dramatic changes to food sources of the birds suggest that the water system is still in recovery. Anja takes to the skies for a bird's eye view and Derek and Simon investigate the health of the local fish and fowl.

Wine making technology. Technology is indispensible in modern wine making, displacing the romantic notion of fermenting a fine drop. Maps taken from the air help guide viticulturalists to manage the famous terra rossa soils of Coonawarra using strategies such as composting thirsty vines and planting companion plants to absorb water. The vine leaves are also tapped and scanned to provide information that determines a precise watering regime. The result is all in the tasting, a chance for our road weary trio to dress up and prove that there is still romance in the art of fine winemaking.

Penguin dogs. In a world-first, Maremma sheepdogs are protecting penguins from hungry foxes. Middle Island, off the coast of Warrnambool, once housed a healthy population of penguins and seabirds. But after years of fox predation the number of penguins plummeted. To stop the foxes, a local farmer suggested that Maremmas - gorgeous Italian dogs traditionally used to protect chickens from wild dogs - be brought in to look after the penguins. There has since been a remarkable recovery in penguin numbers, from fewer than 10 in 2005 to approximately 200 in 2012.
