Numerical Order for Numbers 1 – 30Subject: MathGrade: 1st (ESE)Resource: The Mailbox - Grade 1 - Aug./Sept. 2011 (pgs. 14 and 15)Materials: whiteboard, projector, laptop, "Pick the Shapes!" worksheets, 4 crayons per student (red, green, blue, and yellow), pattern blocks (one hexagon, two trapezoids, two rhombuses, and eight triangles per student), 30 cardstock die-cut apples numbered from 1 to 30, pocket chart, "Fruit-Bowl Fun" worksheets, pencilsTime Allotment: 1 Hour/1 Class periodLearner Diversity: For students unable to verbally communicate or physically move, the teacher will display two numbered die-cut apples using the "choices technique" and ask the student which number should come next in the number line. In this technique, the teacher holds one apple at the student's head level while holding another apple at the student's waist level. The student then chooses the apple by gazing at it for three seconds while the teacher counts orally. If correct, the teacher will place the apple in the correct location of the pocket chart and switch out numbered apples to repeat the process again. If incorrect, the teacher will guide the student to choose the correct apple, switch positions of the same numbered apples, and have the student try again. Objective: After placing numbered apple die-cuts into a pocket chart according to their numerical order, students will write the missing numbers on a number order skill sheet using numbers 1 to 30 with 80% accuracy.Engagement: Using the classroom whiteboard, projector, and laptop, students will view a two and a half minute Schooltube video of another elementary class singing a song about apples. After viewing the video, the teacher explains that all of today's math activities contain math problems using apples. Next, the teacher writes the letters to spell the word "apples" on the whiteboard and instructs students to watch as she points to the letters while they sing the song. When it is time to clap instead of sing a letter, the teacher covers up the letter by placing an apple die-cut over the letter. The teacher replays the video and students sing along while the teacher points to the corresponding letters.Exploration: At this math center, students will receive a copy of the "Pick the Shapes!" worksheet, crayons, and pattern blocks to use in forming different geometric figures. Students will use the pattern blocks to fill each apple on the worksheet, trace the blocks, and color the tracing the corresponding color of the pattern block. Students will then describe and compare the pattern blocks they used to form the new geometric shape to a Teacher's Assistant.Engagement: Before the school day begins, the teacher will need to create 30 cardstock die-cut apples numbered from 1 to 30 and place the apple numbered 15 on the second row of a pocket chart while placing the remaining apples nearby in random order. For the entire class, the teacher models choosing the number 14 apple and placing it in the pocket chart directly in front of the number 15 apple. She then explains that she is placing the apples in numerical order and the number 14 comes directly before the number 15. The teacher continues choosing apples that either come before or after the numbered apples displayed in the pocket chart. The teacher then selects individual students to the pocket chart to select an apple, place it in its correct position, and explain their reasoning. The teacher continues the activity until apples numbered from 1 to 30 are placed in their correct location in the pocket chart.Elaboration: To further this activity, the teacher removes all the even numbered apples from the pocket chart and mixes them up. The teacher then models selecting an even numbered apple, identifying the number, as well as identifying the odd numbers that come before and after the even number. The teacher then places the even numbered apple in the correct position of the pocket chart. The teacher chooses two more even numbered apples and places them in their correct positions. For this math center, students visit the center in pairs, take turns selecting an even number, and placing it in the correct position of the pocket chart. Play continues until all the even numbered apples are back in their correct location in the pocket chart. The teacher then removes all the odd numbered apples and students repeat this activity. Pairs rotate in and out of this math center as time permits.Evaluation: When students are not engaged at a math center, they are to write in the missing numbers on the number order skill sheet "Fruit-Bowl Fun". After completing the worksheet, students will write the numbers 15 through 1 counting backwards at the bottom of the worksheet. ................
