Mayra Mr. Bitton Scrapes “Millions of Tons! Scientist Tally up Plastic Pollution in Oceans” By: Alan Boyle Published: Feb 12, 2015 Source: NBC News With growth in the economy comes a growth in consumption witch leads to growth in plastic waste. I used to predict that when I threw away my waste it ended up in a landfill and it will never move away from their. But I’ve been proven wrong. Plastic waste does end up in landfills but then drifts away and ends up in our oceans.Researchers in San Jose, California have started to estimate the amount of plastic waste we produce and end up in the ocean. “Plastic waste, ranging, from grocery bags and soft-drink bottles to lost rubber duckies and the micro-beads in washed-off cosmetics, is a fast-growing environmental problem.” They have estimated that over 13 million tons of plastic waste flows into the sea every year and will continue to grow with in the incoming years. China was one of the coastal countries that were “judged biggest plastic polluter”. Along came the United States who ranked 20th. Researchers have estimated several of tons that lie on and with in the ocean, 269,000 tons of plastic floats on top of the surface. Several more tons are broken down with in the stomachs of marine life. Environmental Scientist at UCSB Roland Geyer, says “that it’s not clear exactly where all those tons of plastic waste go… our research is a call to duty to look for and find that missing plastic.” He plans to create a survey to where they can track down the life cycle of plastic products. I found this article interesting because the topic was about plastic waste witch to me it’s always interesting to find more information about it. I can walk out to my street and actually see the impact of plastic waste. After reading this article I find it fascinating that people are taking action and tracking down the life cycle of plastic waste. I believe with this it will take us a step closer to now how to reduce the amount of plastic we place on the ocean so it won’t affect the marine life. But along with tacking the life of plastic we can take other action to reduce waste. For example, we can recycle plastic and use environmental friendly products. I strongly agree with Jambeck’s quote, “We know the solution…We must cut back on plastic waste generation, and increase the amount we capture and manage properly.” Link to Article: ................
