4-H & FFA LIVESTOCK
This Division of Livestock is for Wibaux County 4-H & FFA members, ONLY! All entries are eligible for Showmanship. Showmanship shall be divided into two classes: Senior Division: 14 years old prior to October 1st through 19 year olds; Junior Division: includes members up to and including 14 year olds after October 1st.
If there are less than 3 exhibitors in each class of livestock, they will compete for a Showmanship plaque in the Junior and Senior Division. If there are 3 or more exhibitors in each showmanship class of livestock, they will compete for their choice of a buckle or coat. Reserve Champion Showman from each class of livestock will receive a rosette. The winner from each class of livestock will compete for Junior and Senior Round Robin Showmanship and the winner will receive a trophy. Round Robin Reserve Champion Junior and Senior Showman will each receive a rosette. Each class of livestock must be represented in the round robin competition. 4-H & FFA members need to designate their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice for round robin competition on their entry blanks.
4-H & FFA MARKET ANIMALS RECEIVING A WHITE RIBBON WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE 4-H & FFA LIVESTOCK SALE.
Sale animals MUST be at the fairgrounds by 6:30 p.m. on THURSDAY NIGHT of the fair. The sale animals will be weighed as they arrive at the fairgrounds Thursday night. THE WEIGH-IN WILL TAKE PLACE FROM 5:30 P.M.-6:30 P.M. ON THURSDAY. THERE WILL BE A 2% PENCIL SHRINK ON LATE WEIGH-INS. 4-H & FFA animals that have been designated as market animals but do not make market weights will be sold at PREMIUM ONLY at the livestock sale if they received a red or blue ribbon. Any questions concerning the sale weight of market livestock must be brought to the attention of the Fair Board at the time of the official "weigh-in".
4-H & FFA Sale animals shown and placed MUST BE THE ONE SOLD.
Assigned trailer parking will be available as you arrive for the weigh-in. There will be assigned stalls/pens that can be found on maps posted throughout the livestock barns.
You must adhere to your designated assignment unless a fair board member approves the change.
ALL horses will be shown on the halter for Showmanship. ALL livestock, except cow-calf pairs; Pens of 3; Sheep and Swine, will be shown on the halter.
ALL HORSES NEED TO BE BEDDED!!!
ALL livestock shall remain under the control of the exhibitor. Any exhibitor who cannot control their animal should not have them at the fairgrounds. The Fair Board will accept responsibilities for removing uncontrollable livestock.
The Fair Board believes that tranquilizing animals which are to be exhibited at the fair is an unethical practice and they ask that it NOT be done.
4-H & FFA Livestock Exhibits ARE NOT ELIGIBLE to enter in Open Class unless there are Open Class entries other than 4-H & FFA. 4-H & FFA livestock must receive a blue ribbon to be eligible for open class.
PROPOSED COUNTY FAIR/SHOW GUIDELINES:
1. MT 4-H & FFA require that animals be handled in a proper & ethical manner in accordance with accepted modern animal husbandry & scientific practices. In addition, adequate care, including watering, feeding, & comfort should be appropriately provided to all animals. Any individual treating an animal in any other manner may be asked to leave the grounds. Livestock shall not be exhibited if the drugs in accordance with federal, state & provincial statutes, regulations, and rules affect the animal’s performance or appearance at the event.
2. Exhibitors, their parents, leaders, & instructors have a serious responsibility to follow animal health practices that are approved by the Industry & the USDA to assure that meat customers are receiving wholesome food. Health aids and other approved products should be used with care according to prescribed practices, only when needed, & in the correct amounts.
3. MT 4-H & FFA require that market animals meet all the Food and Drug Administration regulations governing management & safety practices. Approved withdrawal times from health aids & growth stimulants must be followed. Animals that have not met these standards will not be allowed to be sold.
4. Exhibitors should seek competent professional advice if medical situations arise which are beyond their capabilities.

EXHIBITING HINTS FOR VEGETABLES:
Points to be considered in selecting a vegetable exhibit are quality and condition. Judging is generally based on the readiness of the products for immediate use. Quality is determined by actual test.
Condition and quality also include point of freedom of disease, insect work, mechanical injury and defects. Vegetable exhibits should comprise specimens that are practically perfect from a physical standpoint.
Medium sizes are generally preferred to the very large sizes. Uniformity is particularly important.
BEANS: String pods should be uniform in size, shape, color and stage of maturity.
BEETS: Should be uniform in size, shape and color. Should be smooth and free from side roots and blemishes. Tops should be trimmed 1-3 inches. The flesh, when cut, should be firm, crisp and fine grained. White rings in the cut flesh lower the quality score. Medium to small sizes are preferred (1-1/2 to 2 inches in diameter).
CABBAGE: Heads solid, firm and fresh, free from insect damage, tender and crisp, heavy for size. Exhibit medium-size heads: 2-5 pounds for round and flat heads; 1.5-3 pounds for pointed heads. Do not peel excessively. Two layers of sound, green outer leaves should be left on. Trim stem to be no longer than ½-inch.
CARROTS: Sample should be typical of its group size. Normally a deep orange in color. Uniform in color, size and shape. Specimens should be smooth, clean, fresh (not withered), and free from sunburn. There should be no coarse rings when cut. Tops should be removed from ½" to 1" from crown. Shoulders should not be green or purple.
CUCUMBERS: Slicing cucumbers should be 6-9 inches in length, not more than 2-3/8 inch in diameter. Pickling cucumbers should be no greater than 1.25 inches in diameter, not more than 3.5 inches in length. Harvest by cutting stem and leave approximately 1/4-inch of stem. Avoid injury to fruit. Wash, choose well-shaped specimen.
HEAD LETTUCE: Solidity and sizes of heads are especially important. Uniformity of size, shape and color very desirable. Should be no evidence of insect damage or disease.
LEAF LETTUCE: Tender, good color, and fresh (not wilted). Cut off stem at crown or ground level (exhibit plant intact). Wash plant thoroughly and carefully to prevent damage to leaves.
KOHLRABI: Should be in good condition and not hard, woody or pithy; skin easily penetrated by thumb nail. Crisp and fine grained when cut. Remove stem and root at base.
ONIONS: Uniformity and maturity of particular importance. Specimens should not be less than 2 inches in diameter. Should be smooth and clean, not peeled so as to be slick. Neck should be small and well cured or dry. Color must be typical of the variety. Tops should be trimmed ½-1 inch above bulb.
GREEN BUNCHING ONIONS: Medium-sized tender stems with long white shanks, clean. Remove loose or discolored outer skin. Trim roots evenly 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Cut tops 4 to 6 inches above the white shank. Bulb should be no more than twice the diameter of the shank.
PARSNIPS: There should be uniformity throughout the exhibit. Long type should not be less than 15", hollow crown not less than 12" and not less than two and one half inches thick at the thickest part. Should be free from rust and side roots. Light creamy color. Not corky.
PEAS IN POD: Smooth, clean, free from defects or diseases. Uniform, deep green pods, and well-filled. Avoid over maturity as indicated by yellowing of the pods or toughness and bitterness in the peas. Uniformity in exhibit desirable.
PEAS: Dry shelled, judged from the standpoint of variety, uniformity of color and size and freedom from mixture dirt, impurities and defective seeds.
PEPPERS: Should be deep in color, fresh, firm, symmetrical. In close competition the advantage is given to perfectly green varieties; red peppers otherwise. Number of lobes should be uniform.
POTATOES: Firm, medium-size, clean. Mature, free of insect damage or mechanical injury. Typical shape and color for variety.
PUMPKINS: Uniformity of variety, size and color. Must be free from mechanical injury and insects. Specimens should be mature as indicated by hardness of shell. Stems should be attached.
RADISHES: Fresh, firm, crisp, good color, smooth and free of blemishes. Leave 1-inch top. Wash and tie six roots per bunch.
RHUBARB: Stalks uniform in size and color. Fresh, brittle, solid, free from blemishes or dirt. Pull from plant, do no cut but remove small bracts at the base of each stalk. Leave 1/4 inch of leaf on stalk.
SQUASH: In winter squash, maturity is particularly important as indicated by hardness of outer shell, uniformity of color, weight and type. Should be free from blemishes. Stem should be attached and trimmed ½-2 inches. Vegetable marrow and summer squash should be immature, as indicated by soft shell.
SWEET CORN: Fresh, well-fitted ears, uniform in size, shape and color. Avoid mixtures of varieties on the ear. Must be in prime shape for use, with husk.
SWISS CHARD: Leaf blades should be uniform in color, crisp, with bright tender, fleshy leaf stalks. Remove the root, but leave the crown in place.
TOMATOES: Specimens should be selected for varietal type and uniformity of type, size, color and maturity. Must be firm and free from cracks, insect and mechanical injury. No green streaks. Red tomatoes should be in prime condition for slicing. Green tomatoes should be entirely green with no red showing and in the best stage of maturity for the purpose intended. Red tomatoes–remove stem. Green tomatoes–leave short stem on.
TURNIPS: Smaller sizes are generally most desirable. Uniform with bright color. Clean. Free from side roots and blemishes. Trim top to 1-3 inches. Remove side roots.
WATERMELON: Specimens should be uniform in size, color and type and free from blemishes due to disease, insect or mechanical injury.
ZUCCHINI: Should be 6-9 inches in length and waxy on the outside and have a rubbery feeling.
