General Meeting – May Luncheon

President Billingsley called the meeting to order at 12:15. She asked everyone to turn off their cell phones.

President Billingsley introduced Luncheon Chairs Beth Magnus, Sally Horvath and Carolyn Shriver.

Beth welcomed everyone to the luncheon and thanked the staff at Kings Creek Country Club. She then explained the centerpieces and how they celebrated the success of the Capital Campaign and how “It Takes a Village” became the theme for the luncheon.

President Billingsley thanked the Luncheon Chairs.

Inspiration: Karol Powers-Case told us about seeing the ocean for the first time at age 21 and shared a poem about going to the sea. She wished everyone a happy summer.

Special Guests:

President Billingsley introduced Carole Suchanek and Winnie Oggenfuss, chairs of her Help for the Homeless Community Service Project. Carole shared the successes of President Billingsley’s presidential program by introducing some special guests. Carole introduced Dawn Waples, the mother that was mentored by our members, Beth Doty, a representative of the West Rehoboth Community Land Trust which helped supply Dawn with a home and Wally Johnson, the Public Relations Director for the Community Resource Center.

Treasurer:

Treasurer Suzanne Jones reported on the VIA Endowment Fund. This fund had been held in a CD at PNC Bank. The CD recently matured. The money was then put into a CD at Community Bank which required a confirmation that Suzanne was acting on behalf of the VIA.

Suzanne moved to have $8,105.63 approved to purchase a CD at Community Bank. The motion passed.

Capital Campaign:

Chair Theda Blackwelder gave her final Capital Campaign Report. The Designer Show House has one more weekend. Theda thanked Show House Chair Rose Marie Patin for her efforts and those of all the volunteers who have helped to make this event possible. She also encouraged everyone to help advertise the Show House. As of today, the Capital Campaign has in its treasury $28,701.92. The payoff of the mortgage with PNC Bank is $7,109.67.

Theda moved to use funds from the Capital Campaign Treasury to write a check to PNC Bank to pay off the mortgage in full. The motion passed.

Theda then reminded everyone to make plans to attend the Burn the Mortgage Gala on October 10th from 6:30 – 9:30 at the Rehoboth Country Club.

Moment of Silence:

President Billingsley asked for a moment of silence as she read the names of members who have passed away this year.

Lunch

Luncheon Chair Beth Magnus explained that instead of favors, the committee went to our supporters and purchased gift certificates. Random names were called to determine the winners of the gift certificates both before lunch and after lunch. Lunch was served.

All members were reminded to pick up their membership cards and parking permits from Sue Scaglione in the back room. Members were also reminded to please turn in Designer Show House tickets and the money for tickets sold to Phyllis Stone.

Carol Hall, Chair of the Fashion Show, presented items from the Fashion Show that were part of today’s silent auction. Carol then called the winning numbers and members picked up their prizes.

President’s Report:

President Billingsley presented her final report. She reported on the many accomplishments of the VIA during her two year term. Details of these accomplishments are also reported on the website. She announced that the VIA had recently won a Delaware State Award for Community Improvement Projects. Carolyn also reminded us that while we were working to help others, we also had fun. She thanked everyone for their support. Everyone rose and thanked Carolyn for a job well done.

Citizen of the Year:

Chair of the Citizen of the Year committee Sandy Roberts introduced the 2014 Citizen of the Year, Joan Caggiano. Joan was recognized as a local business owner who has given back to the community for many years. Joan thanked everyone for her award.

Recognition:

President Billingsley asked members of her Executive Board to come forward and be recognized. All were thanked for what they had done during the last two years.

After recognizing her board, Carolyn asked all members of the new administration to come forward and be installed. Carolyn did a rose themed installation ceremony and installed the following:

President’s Acceptance Speech:

Newly installed President Blackwelder asked a surprise guest (Carolyn’s husband Lance) to please come and pin on Carolyn’s Past President’s pin. Lance thanked the VIA for teaching him to be a social secretary and a phone message taker.

Theda discussed her Presidential Community Project which will be Cancer Support. Sandy Roberts, a cancer survivor, will chair this project and work has already begun. The VIA will be involved working with the local cancer support community.

50/50 $135 was won by Elayne Cannarozzi.

The Collect was recited and the meeting was adjourned at 2:37.
