Progress Energy Florida Completes Second Hines Unit

Progress Energy Florida has placed into service the second generating unit at its Hines Generation Complex in Polk County, Fla. The newly completed 516 MW natural gas-fueled combined-cycle unit joins a 482-MW natural gas-fueled combined-cycle already in operation. Construction on a third unit at the site is scheduled to begin in February and will be completed December 2005. The company recently began the bidding process for a proposed fourth unit at the site.

AmerGen's Ill. Clinton nuke Returning to Service

AmerGen Energy's 950 megawatt Clinton nuclear power plant in Illinois was expected to boost power today after repairs on a leaking tube are completed. Late yesterday the plant was cut back to 44 percent capacity to fix a leaking tube in the main condenser. The company has completed repairs and is in the process of increasing production.

Alliant’s Duane Arnold 1 Plant Returned to Service

The 580MW Duane Arnold Unit 1 Plant of Alliant Energy Corp. has returned to 100 percent service following the completion of unplanned repairs to a condenser vacuum.

Suspicious Substance at Central Maine Power

Central Maine Power reported a suspicious white powder at its Augusta Primary Dispatch and Service Center. The local FBI and NIPC authorities were notified and the center was evacuated. It was later determined that the powder was not harmful.

TransCanada Restores Partial Service

One section of TransCanada Pipeline Ltd.'s pipeline that delivers gas to Eastern Canada, Chicago and the Eastern U.S burst has been repaired and was placed into service with reduced capacity over the weekend. Information on the capacity of the repaired line was not immediately available. Repairs to the other broken section are underway; However, the line is not expected to return to service until later in the week. Once repairs for the second break site are complete and the line is readied for service and flow re-established, firm and interrupted service will be restored. The system typically moves one billion cubic feet of gas per day TransCanada declared force majeure and has restricted customers to 200 million cubic feet per day. The cause of the breaks is still under investigation.

Michigan Orders Post-Blackout Tree Trimming Reports

As a direct result of the investigation of the massive blackout of August 14, the Michigan Public Service Commission on Tuesday ordered local investor-owned utilities to file reports by April 1 detailing their tree trimming practices. Citing tree-related problems that preceded the huge August 14 blackout, the Commission is taking action to make sure that such an event does not start in Michigan because of inadequate tree trimming practices. The commission is requiring reports to detail programs to clear vegetation and maintain lines undertaken by Michigan utilities in 2003. .



Nevada keeps on the attack in its nuclear war with feds

Nevada will ask a federal appeals court on January 14 to block the U.S. government from carrying out plans to store nuclear waste in the state. Last year, despite Nevada's objections, Congress and the President approved a permanent national repository on federal land 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, for 77,000 tons of radioactive waste. On January 14, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia will hear nine lawsuits filed by Nevada, Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada Defendants include Bush, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the Environmental Protection Agency. Rulings in the lawsuits are expected in mid-2004 and the results could determine the future of the Yucca Mountain project.
