Introduction to Jazz Piano

Entry level applied study focuses on learning jazz and pop harmony through analysis and realization of chord progressions from Jazz standards. The course is intended for non-major music students with acceptable proficiency in reading standard notation. Other instrumentalists and vocalists are also encouraged to study basic harmony and piano voicing.

Goals: The student should be able to play jazz standards by the end of the semester: chords with extended partials in correct voicing with melodies, memorized, at least five different pieces of varying styles memorized (swing, bossa nova, jazz waltz, jazz ballad), that use common chord progressions (Blues, Rhythm Changes, Modal, Cycle).

After two semesters of Intro to Jazz Piano student can petition for Advanced Jazz Piano.
