Libraries Internet access – FOI request

A request has been received under the FOI for information on the Libraries Web Filtering solution. Specifically:-

• A list of the categories we block

• Specific URLs we block

• A list of URLs that have been requested access to that are otherwise blocked

• A list of URLs that were granted access after a request was made

Background

The SBC Libraries use a Barracuda Web Filter 610 appliance. Details of the categories that the appliance can be configured to manage can be found on the following webpage:-



SBC Specific information

Access can be configured differently based upon adult or children usage (by Active Directory group membership) but the underlying default settings on the appliance are as follows:-

The following are custom categories that have been setup to “trump” default of Group membership managed access. There are 2 categories; ALLOW and DENY. Requests for additions are sent from the Libraries staff and approved by the Libraries IT representative.
