Hi Ashley,Our proposal is complete!I am sending you four other emails with examples of each artist’s images, their statements and bios.I’m emailing them separately since the files are large and I want to make sure the images come through. We all have more work in a variety of sizes and will integrate it into the three gallery rooms in a way that fits the theme. Many of these works come from ongoing figure groups where we hire models and paint for 3 or more hours. Some of these depictions are then used in studio painting. The statement below, which I sent you in a draft, reiterates the overall theme. You will also note short statements for each artist in their separate email pages.Kindly let me know when you have received everything and please contact me with any questions.Thank you and best to you ~AyrisWomen Painting WomenWomen are stepping forward as we acknowledge each other and ourselves. In the last few years, many more women are running for political offices, speaking out about job conditions, asking for equal job opportunities with equal pay and telling their stories about abuse, with the hope it will abate.? It has been a fitful journey, one that started over 100 years ago when women fought for the vote.? Now, after the feminist movement in the 60’s and 70’s and periodic resurgence, many women choose to support each other’s potential and talents as we hone our own.? We are after all half the human inhabitants on the planet and can contribute to its healing. This exhibition offers up the artistic ability of four dedicated women artists but more importantly, their work summons the female figure in various moods as she moves through moments in time. She is depicted in a variety of media, color and light as a singular woman but as all women.? Underneath each piece are aspects of femininity and the experience of being a woman in today’s world, whether overlooked or fully seen.? The eyes, a gesture, the hand, the tilt of her head all convey something about being female and especially so because these are women painted by women.Ayris Hatton c 1/2019Deborah CushmanAbove paintings in order:Winter Princess 18 x 24, oil on canvasTitiana 18 x 24, oil on canvasTattoo Artist 18 x 24, oil on canvasReading 16 x 20, oil on canvasGraffiti Girl 22 x 28, oil on canvas?Deborah Cushman Bio and Artist StatementMy art education began at UC Berkeley in the 1970's, where I started out as a pre- med student for my first 2 years.? I took an art class for a little variety, and after that I promptly switched my major to art.? I was hooked for life.? I was very lucky to study with great artists/professors, specifically Elmer Bischoff, Joan Brown and Robert Colescott, who were all figurative painters. ?After graduating, I went to New York and received my MFA from Columbia University.? I decided after this that I needed a regular paycheck, so I spent the next decade working as a designer for women's apparel in New York City.? In 1994, I returned to Sonoma County, California, where I started painting again daily after a long break from fine art.? For the past 20 years I have been painting landscapes and figurative work, from life.? I've realized that those early years at Berkeley had a profound effect, and continue to influence me.I have developed a passion for the female figure and use it as my vehicle to explore a variety of expression. I am playing with realism and abstraction.? I like to experiment with different materials and processes, both from life and later on in the studio.? My intent is typically to evoke a mood, or tell a narrative, or paint a psychological portrait of the figure.Deepa Jayanth?deepecon@Above paintings in order:1. ?Title: “In my beginning is my end”?Medium: oil on wood, triptych, 12” x 12” each panel, 12” x 36” full size Year: 2017 (sold) 2. ?Title: “A hundred meals without mustard” Medium: oil on linen mounted on wood, 16” x 16” Year: 2017 (sold) 3. ?Title: “How to cook a wolf” Medium: oil on wood, 20” x 20” Year: 2017 4. ?Title: “Pilgrim, it’s a long way” Medium: oil on wood, 20” x 20” Year: 2017 5. ?Title: “Once all dreams were worth dreaming” Medium: oil on wood, 10” x 40”?Year: 2017 Note: Pieces marked sold could be made available for the show.?Artist Statement?I came to this vocation at mid-life having spent the first half with an acute longing for a way of thinking about this world. Now I have a way to be with life’s small and fragile moments; and increasingly to confront the world’s big ones. Oil paint is my medium of choice and drawing the foundation of my practice. My education has awakened me to its long and rich history. As well as to a vibrant dialogue of its place in our world today. I have been making both landscape and figurative paintings. My own unlikely path to this creative life and the choices they have entailed seem to surface metaphorically in both. Even though I immigrated to the United States more than two decades ago, where I am from is very much with me. One of the continuing strivings in my work is how I acknowledge the different worlds I inhabit. I accept this as a lifelong quest. And made a beginning by making and showing a small group of work in my mother’s house in Chennai, India most recently in December 2018. Paintings in this group: The images that inspired these paintings are drawn directly from my current reality to give form to a state of being – that of solitude. “Creative work needs solitude,” says Mary Oliver in her stirring essay ‘Of Power and Time’ (collected in her most recent book Upstream). These paintings attempt to explore fertile and uneasy solitude. Paintings observing a solitary person in the everyday have a rich history in western art, including instances when painters turn the mirror on themselves. Not exactly self-portraits, they speak to our shared yearning for another to bear witness to our lives.?Artist Bio: Deepa Jayanth deepecon@ Art Education2009 - 2018: College of Marin, Kentfield, CAShow History Solo shows: 2018: “In Mother’s House,” in my mother’s house, Chennai, India. Ann Rinehart, Artist/Art Instructor Emeritus. “You have a rare freedom when you paint. ??But, it's more than that. Like a gifted, acrobatic and remarkable "ice skater on thin ice"...you take the brush in your hand. You look. You dip your brush into pigment. ??Then,?you spin your brush across the canvas surface with wizardry and a sure-footed beauty. ?….. I love the way your mind, your eye and your paint brush "skates".."twirls"..."spins" over the surface of your canvas. ?? Capturing a look, a gesture, the mood of a person, has fascinated and challenged me for years. When I paint the figure and face, I hope to convey the essence of a being. ? Some figure pieces are studies for larger oil painting compositions and many more are works with the energy of a timed sitting, one that you have to get down or not. ?I admire the Italian concept of?sprezzatura?and the discipline of?Sumi-e ink work. ?Both of these practices teach how to distill acquired skills into a representation with immediacy and spirit while not overworking it.?????????????Often in figure groups there’s a delightful, contagious atmosphere of banter, sharing information and intense moments of focus.? The models become part of the group, not the object and their lives and character lend to the creative energy. ?I am grateful for the opportunity to paint and draw others. ?I never tire of the experience – it’s always different and exciting.Resume?Exhibits:? ?‘Art in the Barn’ ?Solo Exhibition,?6-8/2018,?Scenic Knoll Ranch, Petaluma Ca? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Marin MOCA: ‘Open to Interpretation 1-2/2019; ’‘Hidden’ 2017; ‘Innerscapes’ 2018,??Motion/Emotion & Re-Vision 2016–17, Small Treasures 2014; 2013;?2011-12? ????????????????????College of Marin, Kentfield Emeritus Center:?“Line & Shadow”?1-2/2015,?‘Local Landscape’ 3/2015?????????????????????
