Grade 12 College English Independent Study Unit (ISU)

This assignment is worth 15% of your final mark

Media project & presentation due WEDNESDAY MAY 28TH

We all have stories. Every story is different but we all deserve a chance to be heard. Your voice is powerful.

Like Amir in The Kite Runner, you will tell your own immigration story OR interview someone else about their immigration experience and tell their story.

Your ISU has TWO components: a media project and an oral presentation. You must complete both parts of the ISU in order to be assessed for the full 15%.

Steps to Completing the Project

1. Respond to the attached questions OR use the questions to interview someone about their immigration experience. Responses to questions are due Wed. May 7th.

2. Analyze the information you have gathered and reflect on the themes that connect your story to The Kite Runner. Come prepared to write a short reflection paper on these themes in class and discuss your ISU with your teacher on Wed. May 21st.

3. Once you’ve identified the themes, you will create a media project that communicates the immigration story. Your media project options include:

a) A poem or spoken word presentation

b) A poster display of images and writing

c) A video

d) A song that you’ve written and will perform

e) A well-scripted short drama skit

f) A dance

g) A Power Point or Prezi presentation

Note: Whatever option you select, your project must communicate CLEARLY and ACADEMICALLY the immigration story you captured in your interview.

4. Present your media project in a fair-style presentation on Wednesday May 28th.
