PERCHIN FOR MS - Lake Simcoe's Premier Ice Fishing Event

Unbelievable Success with $10,000 Raised for MS!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 4,2012

Sibbald Point Provincial Park, Lake Simcoe: Despite huricane force winds and unbearable fishing conditions, an astounding 200 teams competed in the Second Annual PERCHIN FOR MS Fundraiser Perch Fishing Tournament on Sat. March 3. “I was shocked once again to see so many people willing and eager to go out and fish in such unbelievable weather,” said host and organizer Doug Poirier. “ Everyone knew the winds were going to be terrible and yet teams started arriving at 5:30 in the morning, ready and excited to go... they all went out and still managed to have a great time” he said

Each team paid a $40 entry fee of which half is donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The 10 heaviest perch would win the tournament.

At 8am, all anglers had found their own little hot spots and at the sound of the siren...fishing began within the 1.5 x 2 km designated zone marked with pylons! Many teams stayed in one area as the wind was just too strong to keep moving...or they had already found the Xspot, such wa the case for the Winning Team of Rob Spragg and Jesse Burden of Sutton and Jackson's Point. "we used the depth chart to find some deeper water where we had been catching perch throughout the winter. We used minnows as our choice of bait and just played with different weights to help us find bottom and keep our lines effective as the current was so crazy!" said Rob

The team calling themselves "Team Ram Rod" weighed in 6.980lbs worth of perch for their win taking home $1200.00 cash and choice of Prizes from the amazing prize table!

There was also a separate Pot that anglers could enter for 3 additional contests. Big Fish, Argo Dream Fish and Humminbird Mystery Weight!

The biggest fish of the event was caught by Greg Lunn who caught a beautiful 1.355 lb, perch with his partner Joe Pilatzkie. They won a weekend getaway to Chaudiere Lodge on the French River. One Mystery weight was also hit with the Team of Kelly and James Dean winning Humminbird Fish Finders each! Unfortunately though the Provincial Record Perch was not caught, so the Argo will continue to be a dream for many fishermen for another year!

The tournament was more than just about the fish or the wind. Poirier started the event to educate about MS and to try and make a difference and show people that life can still go on, even with a disability. " I wanted to do this tournament to encourage people to get out and enjoy the outdoors and to keep active! I also wanted to raise awareness and some money to help find a cure for this dreaded disease" I am pleased to announce, that with such amazing support and generous donations we raised $10,000 that will go directly to the MS Society,” said Poirier.

Anglers who fished the Perchin For MS Fundraiser came from ALL over Ontario...some driving 6 hours or more and others even came from the United States.

The tournament also once again drew all types and abilities...from families with kids to hard core competitive anglers.

One of the bigger stories though would have to be the prize table and AMAZING support of the sponsors and community!

“This year's prizes and auction items supplied by companies and individuals was amazing and exceeded expectations,” said Poirier. Our community and that of the fishing world really showed amazing support for such a worthwhile cause! We especially would like to thank our top sponsors Sandy Young and Laura Rackham - Prudential Realty Brokers, RMC Argo in Beaverton, Upper Canada Sod and Landscape, Maple Hyundai and Maple Toyota, DW & Sons Bait and Tackle, DC Marine, and South Paw Trading Post.
