Aims, objectives, current status, planning and targets

Introduction

The school Library provides information, inculcates ideas, and develops knowledge that is so essential to functioning successfully in today’s information and knowledge based society. It is fundamental to school library to equip students with life long learning skills and develop in them creative thinking and imagination, and enabling them to live as ideal and responsible citizens.

Thus, the school library must be made the hub of all the activities planned and executed in school. It can be used by students to prepare for their next class period, home examination, general education, information, competitions, recreation and inspiration. To cater to the wide varieties of demands of students and teachers it has to judiciously select and procure the prescribed/recommended text-books and other reading material from different sources, technically process it by making use of a standard scheme of classification, catalogue it to provide various access points, organise the collection on scientific lines, circulate the documents and disseminate the information in the manner most liked by the students and teachers. In addition, the school library has to serve as a resource centre as well. (Organizing School Libraries-Guidelines, CBSE, 2006).

Great importance has given to the organization and management of librarires in Kendriya Vidyalayas. The Education Code says that, every endeavour should be made to ensure that the library adds to scholastic efficiency by providing material to supplement and enrich instruction and guidance given to the class room, besides affording the child to discover himself, guide him to adopt higher ideals of life and help him in the choice of useful career.

The main objectives of Vidyalaya library are;

▪ To serve an adjunct to class room instruction

▪ To provide extra reading facilities

▪ To sustain co-curricular programmes

▪ To create purposeful reading among children

▪ To foster love of books and habit of careful handling of books

▪ To acquire information literacy skills

▪ To cater the needs of bright and gifted children on one hand and under achievers on the other

▪ To provide facilities to teachers for improved professional efficiency

▪ To equip the students in searching, evaluating and using the information for decision making

▪ To train the pupils in careful use of public property.

1. School Library Media Programme 2007-‘08

School Library Media Programme is the full range of learning experiences arising out of school library assessment, resources, facilities, support services, technologies, community connections and staff leadership. A properly planned programme is the backbone of the School Library since it contributes tremendously to the academic achievement of the students.

The SLMProgramme for Kendriya Vidyalaya ,Pattom for the session 2007-’08 has been planned and approved for implementation.

1. Library of Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom-Historical background

The library started functioning along with the Vidyalaya itself in the year 1965.It has been taking an important role in the academic and self-development of the students and teachers.

2. School Library Committee

1. Aims and objectives

i) To recommend suitable budgetary provisions for the library and resource centre;

ii) To formulate policy in relation to the development of resources for reading, reference and resource centre;

iii) To develop a general programme of library services to suit the interest and requirement of different teaching departments of the school;

iv) To make recommendations for proper functioning of school library resouce centre.

A meeting of the Vidyalaya Library Committee was held on 10 Sept. 2007 at Principal’s chamber and the summary of minutes is given below:

i) Proper conduction of Class libraries and its regular evaluation

ii) Fund allocation to different subject fields and deputation of teachers for book selection.

iii) Inauguration of Reader’s Club by October first week

iv) Appraisal of library automation works and routine activities.

v) Reading promotional programmes.

Resources

1. Documentary Resources

3.1.1 Books

Books are the chief and conventional information resources in the library.

Content and usefulness should be the priorities in the selection and acquisition of books. It includes reference books, books on various subjects, textbooks, books for competitive examinations etc

1. Stock as on 17th Sept.2007

As on 17h September 2007 library has a collection of 21090 books. 587 books were added between 06th July and 17th September 2007.

2. Technical Processing: Classification and cataloguing

Dewey Decimal System of book classification (DDC-21) is followed. This system has a worldwide acceptance and is very user friendly. Here, the universe of knowledge is divided in to ten main classes and its subdivisions. There are special identifiers for Reference, Textbooks, Books for competitive exams and CBSE /KVS publications.

Since the library house keeping activities are being automated an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is in the process of making. By the completion of it, the users can access and search the full database of library holdings and know its current status.

3. Stock verification

Yearly stock taking activity is very important to check the physical presence of the holdings. It facilitates to set up priorities in collection development. Stock verification for the session 2006-07 was completed by the end of April 2007.

4. Condemnation of outdated and unserviceable books

Proper weeding out of the unserviceable or outdated books helps to make a live collection.

A total of 1500 books were earmarked and condemned by the Condemnation board. These books were auctioned on 13-14th of August 2007.

5. Selection and Acquisition of new books

The proper selection of books according to the level and reading habit of the students and teachers is very important to build a good stock. The school library committee deputes concerned subject teachers for the book selection. Subject-wise fund allocation has done. Special importance is given to children’s books for primary and secondary students.

Books are accessed, stamped and data entered in to the Accession Register and the library database.

2 Binding of books

A total of 184 mutilated books were send for binding this year.

3.1.1.7 Targets for the session 2007-‘08

i) Strengthen the reference section

ii) Acquire more books in new subject areas such as IT, Bio-technology, Disaster Management, Environmental Education, etc

iii) Make a collection of career guidance books and books for competitive examinations.

iv) Strengthen the Hindi and Sanskrit language section

Out of Sixty-Four, Seventeen periodicals are subscribed by post and rest are procuring from the local market.

2. Newspapers

1. Classification

There are four national and two regional newspapers out of which one is in Hindi and two are in Malayalam.

Three newspapers are displayed on the newspaper display stands, which are kept in different areas of the school.

2. Special Programme

Under “Generous education Task”, fifty copies of New Indian express are circulated among the students of classes VIII-XII (02 copies each). The concerned English teachers are given the responsibility to conduct activities related to the newspapers such as news reading sessions, word of the day, news analysis and discussions, preparation of scrap books, etc. Students are encouraged to contribute to the children’s sessions of the newspapers.

3. CBSE Question papers

A collection of past CBSE Question papers arranged in subject and year wise which are kept in the library for reference. Students and teachers can take photocopies of it.

3.1.5 Scrap Books and Newspaper clippings

Scrapbooks on “Know your English” and Newspaper clippings on “New Trends in IT” are prepared and kept for reference.

2. Non Documentary Resources

1. Multimedia

The library has a plan to procure educational and encyclopedic VCDs and conducting it’s screening regularly as a part of Readers club activities.

3.2.3 Internet

Three computers with Internet connectivity and a laser printer are installed in the library for the use of teachers and students.

3.2.4 E-books, E-journals and web directories

A collection of E-books and gateways to online open free E-journals and web directories on different subjects are in the process of making.

Infrastructure

1. Building

The library is in the first floor opposite to the office. It has a reading room and a stack room.

2. Furniture and Equipment

There are 20 wooden and 12 metal bookshelves for keeping books in the stack room. It is also equipped with library circulation counter, dictionary stand, new arrival book display rack, newpaper stands and magazine rack. Sixty (60) molded chairs and seven (07) reading tables are also present in the reading room.

Readers Services

3. Circulation of books

Circulation (issue and return/charging & discharging) is one of the main services that the library provides.

The library follows register method for circulation for the time being and it will become online after automation.

1. Students

The students from classes VI to XII can issue one book for a period of two weeks. Separate registers are maintained for each division with one page for each student.

2. Teachers

Book issue registers for teachers are maintained.

4. Open shelf system

Books are arranged in open shelves. The users can brows the collection freely and issue books of their choice.

5. Overnight Issue of periodicals

Back volumes of periodicals are issued to the teachers for one night in the last period of the day.

6. Reading Room and Teacher’s Corner

A well-illuminated reading room equipped with adequate number of tables and chairs. A Teacher’s corner is formed for giving ample seating to teachers for reference.

7. Library Periods

Two library periods are there for every class starting from IX to XII (Shift I) and VI to XII (Shift II). During library periods students can issue and return the books. The book reviews are also submitted and checked.

5.5.1Writing book reviews

It is mandatory to every student to write a review of the book that they have issued from the library. They have to keep a library copybook and it should be submitted along with the returned book and be checked by the librarian. Notes can also be taken on the library copybook

A sample format for book review is given to the students and displayed on the book review bulletin board.

8. Class Libraries

Class libraries are functioning from III to VIII (Shift I) and III to V (Shift II). A class library book issue register is maintained. The teachers in charges of the respective classes select books from the library according to the academic standard and reading habit of the students. The same number of books according to the roll is issued. Books are replaced in every three months.

During library periods books are issued to students and the bibliographic details are entered in a register that is kept with the teacher. Students are direct to write book reviews and activities such as story telling, reading sessions, competiotions etc are conducted.

9. Readers Club

"Reader's Club" is a community of good readers /information seekers those who are interested in developing their quest for knowledge by the proper and timely use of different information resources and by taking part in various literary and library related activities.

1. Aims and Objectives

i) Developing reading habit by the proper and directed use of information sources

ii) Developing information literacy skills that increase the ability to search, and evaluate the information and use it for the correct and timely decision making.

iii) Active participation of students, teachers and other users in library activities

iv) Developing a positive and healthy attitude towards our literature, culture and society.

2. Membership

Students with a genuine interest towards reading and library activities can become a member. All the teachers are also members of the Readers Club.

3. Activities

a) Participation in the library activities such as routine works, planning and implementation of reading promotional programmes, special/thematic activities (exhibitions on special days and people, annoncements, bulletin board displays) etc.

10. Bulletin Boards

Bulletin boards displayed in and outside of the library provide information and instructions.

1. Library News

Current news about the library activities and information about the new arrivals in the library, “New Books Alert” are displayed here.

Two sections such as “Book of the week” which carries published cuttings of the on a book and “Author of the week” on writers in current news are also prepared.

2. Book Reviews

Good book reviews by the students and book review columns published on the newspapers are displayed. It gives a chance to the readers to understand the books.

3. Career Corner

A corner for current career opportunities is formed in the library. A bulletin board along with a shelf of career books is also arranged.

4. Readers Club

Information about the activities of the Reeder’s Club is displayed here. Contributions of members (write-ups, articles, poems etc) are also put on display.

11. Exhibitions and Displays

The library conducts exhibitions and displays on important national and international days, personalities and events. It helps the users to know more about the themes/persons.

An exhibition of books on “Freedom struggle and freedom fighters” was conducted from 13 to 17 August in the library.

An exhibition and sale of children’s books from 21 to 23 August was organized with the co-operation of Prabhat Book House, Trivandrum.

Exhibition of books on and by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on 5th September, Teacher’s Day.

Exhibition of Hindi books in the library in connection with the Hindi Fortnight Celebrations from 16 to 30th September.

“Know your library”, exhibition of rare books in the library on every last week of the month.

The library has a plan to conduct more exhibitions and displays in the coming months.

12. Reference Services

Providing ‘Reference Service’ is the most important aspect of reader’s services in a library. It requires the backing of a solid and sound collection of recent editions of reference books.

1. Reference Section

There is a good collection of reference books in the library in different subject areas. These books are not issued and allowed to read only in the library. These include;

▪ Dictionaries (language, subject and biographical)

▪ Encyclopaedias (general, subject, etc.)

▪ Almanacs

▪ Books of facts

▪ Atlases

▪ Travel Guides

▪ Gazetteers

▪ Books of quotations

▪ Year Books

1 Ready Reference

A ready reference section of current and most used Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Yearbooks, Almanacs, and Atlases etc are organized in the library for quick reference of the users.

2. Online Reference

The users can send their queries to askyourlibrarian@. The librarians also maintain their pages as windows to the library activities.

3. Library Blog

A library blog is created and maintained. The users can access it at librarykvpattom.. All information related library activities and resources are given here. It can be accessed by anyone via Internet. The visitors can put their comments also. It acts as a gateway to the school library.

Library Automation

Library automation may be defined as the application computers to perform traditional library house keeping activities such as acquisition, circulation, cataloguing , reference and serials control.

• It provides users with timely access to library materials

• It allows patrons to use search strategies that exceed those that can be used with card catalogue

• It allows patrons to search library’s collection from locations outside the library’s walls.

• It motivates users , equips them with problem solving and information retrieval skills , and provides them with life long learning experiences.

16. Current status of automation of library services

• Hardware installed

• “Libsoft” Integrated Library Management Software was selected after proper tender invitation and scrutiny ()

• Assessed the collection and prepared it for the automation

• Bibliographical data entry started after deciding the required fields.

• 3500 books were entered in to the database as on 16th Sept. 2007

Staffing

The library functions in two shifts and two librarians are there.

Library Promotion Activities

17. New Book Alerts and assembly announcements

Display of the list of new books arrived in the library on the bulletin board.

Routing of New Book Alerts among the concerned teachers.

Regular announcements of library activities in the morning assembly have been conducted.

18. Library Initiation/Orientation Programmes

To know more about the library and its holdings and services, orientation programmes are conducted for the classes of VI and VIII. Library tour is a part of it. During library periods the users are informed with the “do’s and don’t” in the library. For this, Library Rules are displayed prominently in the library.

7.3 Assembly Announcements

A library club member holds regular announcement about the library programmes in the morning assembly.

4. Competitions

To promote reading habit and library use, competitions such as book quiz, reading sessions, designing of book jackets, etc are taken place. Prizes are given to best reader and best class library in the Annual day function.

19. Targets for the session 2007-‘08

i) The parents and interested people can donate books and reading materials to the library. Book donation drive can be organized.

ii) More exhibitions and reading initiation programmes

iii) Large-scale publicity of library activities.

iv) More co-operation with teaching faculty and set library use as a scale of academic achievements

Evaluation

Evaluation of the library programme is very impotant. It helps to assess the functions, its problems and causes, takes adequate corrective measures, reset targets and future plans.

20. Usefulness of the stock

Evaluation of library holdings should be done to find if the resources are used effectively, or if not, what the reasons are. It measures the strength and weakness of the collection and helps in collection development.

21. Usefulness of services

Evaluation of the effectiveness of the services provided by the library should be done routinely to find the problems and its causes. It helps to save energy and time by reorganizing the unused services and introduce new ones.

Conclusion

Library is considered as the heart of the Vidyalaya. In modern educational system it holds a big role in the academic achievement of the students. A properly planned and well-implemented Library Programme is the base of a working library .It evaluates the strengths and weaknesses, analyses the problems and plan the correcting measures. The Library Media Center Programme of the Vidyalaya Library for the session 2007-08 is a step towards to develop the library to a model one with rich teaching and learning support services.
