English 9Welcome! I hope you all had a wonderful summer break! My name is Mrs. Natalie Thomas, and I am beyond excited to officially welcome you to Germantown High School! My goal for each school year has always been the same—to see success and improvement among my students. I promise to do everything I can to make this a successful year for all of us, and I know you will do the same! REMINDER: Please keep this document in the front of your binder as a reference point throughout the school year. If you have questions, reference this first. If it fails to answer your question, then feel free to ask!Contact InformationEmail: thomasn3@ (I check email daily and do my best to respond within 24 hours).Website: Supply ListBring the following to class daily. Students must make arrangements before or after school to use the school library or use the public library, a friend, or a family member's computer if needed. Flexible SeatingThis year we will be implementing flexible seating in our classroom! In addition to traditional seating, students can choose from armchairs, dining tables, stools, rocking chairs, floor cushions, and a variety of other options. I am an advocate for student choice and for being comfortable while we learn; however, we also have to be responsible with our choices. The guidelines below will help us in that endeavor!Choose a workplace that allows you to be SUCCESSFUL!Use seats and class materials APPROPRIATELY!Take care of COMMUNITY supplies.Remember that your teacher has the right to move ANYONE at ANYTIME!Be COMFORTABLE, but be PREPARED to answer the following question: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT SEAT TODAY?Classroom Policies Do your best…ALWAYS!Arrive on time and begin bell work immediately upon entering e prepared with any necessary items and/or homework.Be respectful – follow directions the first time, refraining from behavior that is disruptive to the learning process.Refrain from personal grooming and consuming food or drink during class.NO cell phones – unless directed by the teacher and used only for instructional purposes**Cell phones are incredibly useful in class during certain lessons, and we will use them on occasion. This does not mean that students cannot have their cell phones taken up during these times. If the student is using any social media app or activity on their phone that was not instructed by the classroom teacher, then the phone will be confiscated according to school policy.Consequences for Failing to Follow Classroom Policies1st Offense—Verbal warning2nd Offense—Phone call or email to parent(s)/guardian(s)3rd Offense—Disciplinary referral to school administration*NOTE: Major violations will be dealt with by the administration, regardless of the above sequence of consequences.Grades382772110898A Note to Parents!Last year we had a PROFOUND problem with our freshmen failing to turn classwork in on time. This issue MUST be addressed and improved. We know that your children are experiencing a period of transition, but they do not need to add to the stress of that transition by failing to complete assignments WHEN THEY ARE DUE. If this has been an issue with your child in the past, then you need to make correction of this pattern behavior a TOP priority to help your child succeed academically. Make use of our class website, and make sure that you keep communication lines open with teachers so we can work together to help hold your child accountable.00A Note to Parents!Last year we had a PROFOUND problem with our freshmen failing to turn classwork in on time. Additionally, PowerSchool will be your BEST friend as you all work to stay informed about academic success and progress. Remember that students should contact teachers promptly and respectfully either face-to-face or via email if they have questions about grades or see errors that have been made in PowerSchool.Late Work PolicyStudents who have excused absences must turn in missed assignments within the same number of days they were absent in order to avoid deductions. Students who have unexcused absences cannot makeup work without receiving one letter grade deduction. Students who are not absent but do not turn assignments in on their due date will receive a letter grade deduction each day for five days and then will receive a zero for the missed work. Additionally, the work will NOT be accepted without completing a late work form which requires an explanation for why the assignment was late as well as a parent’s signature. Those forms will be available at the front of the room on the supply table throughout the year, but there are four attached to this packet.PlagiarismGermantown High School values academic honesty and believes plagiarism is a serious offense. Using the work of other people in any way is stealing intellectual property. In the high school setting, it can result in the failure of an assignment, but in a college setting, plagiarism can lead to failure in an entire course or worse. Most importantly, if a student plagiarizes, he or she is not learning, and the ultimate goal of the school is for students to learn.A student has plagiarized if he or she:Has failed to give credit to the proper sources any time an assignment has been completed with the aid of an outside source, whether that source is an electronic translator, literary analysis, or other students.Has copied another person’s work, be it the work of an author or another student, without the use of quotation marks and proper credit following the quote.Has paraphrased an item without giving the original author credit.Has inappropriately collaborated with other students.Has allowed another student to copy his or her work.Has resubmitted his or her own work or the work of another student that was submitted in a previous class or activity. Consequences for plagiarism:If a student has plagiarized, been involved in plagiarism, or allowed plagiarism of his or her own work, even inadvertently, the student will receive a ZERO on the assignment. If two students have turned in work that is the same, all or in part, both students will receive ZEROES on the assignment.Students will also be reported to administration for an Honor Code Violation. Many clubs and organizations at GHS look at these records to determine whether a student meets membership qualifications. Extra CreditExtra credit may be offered during the course of the year. Extra credit work means extra work and extra time put forth on a specifically assigned project. The work must be high quality, and late extra credit work will not be accepted. 3036825250322Missing Work LogStudent’s Name: _____________________________Assignment: ________________________________Due Date: __________________________________Date Submitted: _____________________________Why is this assignment late?
