Dear Practicum Student: - Elon University

ELON UNIVERSITYEXERCISE SCIENCEPRACTICUMESS 281 STUDENT PACKET 2020Dear Practicum Student:The purpose of the practicum in Exercise Science is to give you the opportunity to take part in three work and learning experiences in health and exercise science-related professions so that you can learn as much as possible about them. This is an 80-hour practicum, and you serve approximately 27 hours at each agency. Whenever possible you should complete work at one agency before going to the next one. These should be three different types of experiences. Required reading and an accompanying quiz will be posted on the Moodle site and must be completed PRIOR to starting at your first practicum site.Appropriate practicum agencies include: medical facilities, health/fitness centers, athletic training/sports medicine professionals, corporate wellness/fitness programs, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, podiatry, chiropractic, and many others. You may be supervised by professionals including, but not limited to, physical, occupational, and respiratory therapists, physicians and physician assistants, exercise specialists, nurses, chiropractors and certified athletic trainers. You may not be supervised by individuals without a degree or appropriate certification or licensure.Your responsibilities will include learning as much as you can about the agency and profession, performing job-related tasks with the supervisor, and submitting a 3-4 page typed, double-spaced reflection paper within 5 days of completing each experience (one for each agency). These should include a detailed description of your work experiences (what you learned, examples of skills you saw in the professionals at the agencies), strengths and weaknesses of the agency, professional path of your supervisor, whether or not you met your goals, and your reactions (feelings) about the experience. This is a reflection on the experience so should include something about what you learned from being at this site. They will be graded according to the attached rubric. You should keep a written log of the days and times spent observing at each agency and include the summary of these hours in your reflection paper (as an additional page).Remember: You will receive a letter grade for this practicum, which will be determined by your agency supervisor’s evaluation (see the evaluation form in the information packet for the agency supervisor) as well as my evaluation of your written work and your on time completion of other required tasks and paperwork. You will want to encourage your supervisor to send in the evaluation form as soon as possible upon completion of your hours at each site. The supervisor evaluation MUST BE SENT DIRECTLY to me by the supervisor. A few notes: Dress appropriately. Discuss the definition of ‘appropriate’ with agency supervisor. The site paper that you write should include a summary of the days/hours you worked. Set your phone or other electronic devices to mute. Refrain from using electronic devices when in a professional setting unless its use is related to a work task.Ask questions! Your goal is to find out as much as possible about the profession you are observing so interview your supervisor and others to find out their educational path and how they feel about the work they do.My address is 2525 Campus Box, Elon, NC 27244. My phone number is (336) 278-5862, email is ebailey@elon.edu. I also need at least 3 goals you hope to achieve while at each site. I will also need the signed contract PRIOR to starting your hours at any site. This is required to be sure you are covered by the liability insurance. Your grade will also be impacted by late contracts. While you may start your practicum before the official start of winter term, you may not start UNTIL I have received a signed contract from a supervisor and you have completed the other required assignments (i.e. reading assignment and quiz, your completed application, goals and tentative schedule).
