THE LAST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD

February 9th and 10th 2013

The Savior’s Message:

As the season of Epiphany draws to a close, we see Jesus transfigured in glory for our blessing. His transfiguration was a brief glimpse of the full glory that we can look forward to seeing in heaven one day. May we continue to follow him to the cross as he carries this cross for our salvation!

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Let us pray…

Lord God, before the suffering and death of your One and Only Son, you revealed his glory on the holy mountain. Grant that we who bear his cross on earth may behold by faith the light of his heavenly glory and so be changed into his likeness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Hold Spirit, one God, now and forever

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON Exodus 34:29-35

Moses put a veil over his face to prevent God’s people from seeing the light of God’s glory fading away.

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 148

[pic]

Praise the LORD from the heavens,*

praise him in the heights above.

Praise him, all his angels,*

praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon,*

praise him, all you shining stars.

Refrain

Praise the LORD from the earth,*

lightning and hail, stormy winds that do his bidding,

you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars,*

wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds,

kings of the earth and all rulers on earth,*

young men and maidens, old men and children.

Let them praise the name of the LORD,*

for his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

BE SEATED

M: Brothers and sisters in Christ, when we gather for worship again, the day will be Ash Wednesday, the first day of the season of Lent. On that day we will begin our solemn Lenten journey to the Savior's cross. While the joy of faith remains undiminished throughout the year, our rejoicing during Lent is muted and quiet. For centuries, therefore, the Christian Church has omitted its most jubilant songs during this season, including the song Alleluia, which means, "Praise the Lord." Now for a time we shall say farewell to Alleluia. With this we prepare ourselves for the quieter days of Lent. But the Alleluias will return on Easter dawn, as we gather to shout our songs of praise to the risen Lord.

CLOSING HYMN Farewell to Alleluia.
