What’s the Better Buy?Lesson PlanObjective:Students will find the unit price of items to compare them and decide what item is the best buyMaterials:* What’s the Better Buy? activity sheet* Calculator**While we have not taught dividing decimals yet (this will show up in Unit 5), students should be able to use a calculator to solve for the unit price.Sequence:1. Discuss the meaning of unit price: the price per unit (ex. price per pound, price per ounce, price per dozen, price per item).2. Find the unit price for 5 pizzas that cost $50. Explain to the students that we want to find the price PER pizza. Explain that “per” means divide. We want to take the cost and divide it by how many pizzas we have. $50 ÷ 5 pizzas = $10 per 1 pizza3. Discuss with students the advantage of finding the unit price and comparing similar items when grocery shopping.4. Compare a 14 ounce box of Froot Loops that costs $2.99 to a 20 ounce box of Froot Loops that costs $3.75. The cereal with the lowest unit price is the best deal. Tell students they can use a calculator to solve for the unit price.$2.99 ÷ 14 ounces = $0.21 per ounce [Can also be shown as: $2.9914 oz= $0.21 per oz]$3.75 ÷ 20 ounces = $0.19 per ounceThe 20 oz box of cereal costs less per ounce and is the better buy.5. Have students complete the “What’s the Better Buy?” sheet using a calculator. They must show their work in the center column by showing what they are dividing by and the unit price for each item. ................
