Historical Context:

From the establishment of the first successful English colony at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, the population of the 13 colonies grew rapidly. By 1700, the 13 colonies had close to 300,000 people, and it grew to be well over one million by 1750. In 1790, the first official census of the United States counted 3,900,000 people. While much of this population came from an unusually high birthrate, about half of the increase came from a massive migration of people form Europe, in particular, Great Britain.
