“Self-Evident?”Course ResourcesLearning is experience. Everything else is information.Albert Einstein. It is my sincere hope that you found this course to be informative and engaging. However, we all quickly forget almost all information that we hear unless we immediately begin doing something with the information – begin playing with the concepts ourselves and experiencing them through real-life application. That is when learning happens. It is also my hope that our time spent together will serve as a launching point for positive personal growth that will result in a more fulfilling life for you. That growth begins with learning to: “Think for yourself to decide 1) what you want, 2) what is true, and 3) what you should do to achieve #1 in light of #2.” Ray Dalio, Life & Work Principles xi (Simon & Schuster 2017). Dalio’s book is a fantastic resource in this regard. You Tube has also proven to be a fantastic resource for me. For example, you can find Ray Dalio teaching “Principles for Success” here. If you are 100% satisfied with your work and life today, keep doing what you are doing! If you want to experience a higher level of “happiness” than you enjoy now, that growth will require that you raise your personal standards in one essential way: You must create a consistent daily habit of planning, learning and moving. Most of us are not skilled at creating new positive growth habits. Therefore, I would start with learning to do so. And I would start slowly. The best resource I have found in this regard is B.J. Fogg’s Tiny Habits. You can also hear a summary of Fogg’s research in his Tedx talk here. The easiest, quickest one-stop-shop for developing a more robust daily growth practice that I’ve found to date is a book entitled The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. After creating a small habit using Fogg’s method, I would read The Miracle Morning (there is a Miracle Morning movie available on Amazon Prime, although I have not seen it). You can also easily find Hal Elrod speeches and interviews on You Tube. In terms of movement and the way our bodies work, I have concluded that almost everything I learned about these topics in the first 57 years of my life was shockingly wrong (I’m now 59). Given that Americans have for decades spent immeasurable resources (both time and money) on our health -- all while watching our health decline – that conclusion might not seem so shocking. If you want to revolutionize your health through movement, I suggest staring with The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown and then Move Your DNA by Katy Bowman. For health in general, I believe that you would find two books to be both fascinating and helpful: Dr. Cynthia Li’s Brave New Medicine and Dr. Dean and Anne Ornish’s UnDo It! How Simple Lifestyle Changes Can Reverse Most Chronic Diseases. If you have an interest in meditation, the neuroscience is laid out extremely well in Stress Less, Accomplish More by Emily Fletcher. As with all of this material, what is important is that you take your time. Learning/Growth is a process that takes time. We don’t learn by reading books. We learn through our personal experience with the information that can be gleaned from books (and from many other sources). Emily is a Tallahassee native (although she now lives in New York) and I learned to meditate using her techniques. You can see a 45-minute presentation by Emily here. Finally, if you want to find tools for changing your “focus” rapidly and begin the process of changing your self-defeating internal chatter (the “most important conversation” – the one that you have, mostly subconsciously, with yourself about yourself and the world around you) I recommend A Liberated Mind by Steven C. Hayes, which takes a scientific/therapeutic approach. There are many different resources that take a more “spiritual” approach to this subject that I could also recommend. Adventure on and I wish you a rich and fulfilling career and life! ................
