Finding Your Way Around the Bible
Finding Your Way Around the Bible
The Bible is like a treasure chest. It contains vast riches for those who take the time to find one, open it and use what is inside. But while finding a Bible is easy, some people get lost once they step inside…….

Like any book, using your ‘Contents’ page will help you. Open up your Bible to the Contents page. Use the Contents page to help you find the book you are looking for. You will see that the Bible has two main sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Old Testament / New Testament.
Old Testament: The collection of books written about the time before Jesus.
New Testament: The collection of books written about Jesus (the Gospels) and after the death of Jesus.
Gospels: The first four books of the New Testament are the Gospels. They were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Using Scripture References
The writings in the Bible are also called the ‘Scriptures’. When finding a story in the Bible, we use a ‘Scripture Reference’ system because page numbers are different from Bible to Bible. A scripture reference looks like this:
Matthew 8: 14-15
book chapter verse
The book name is written on the top of each page of the Bible.
The chapter number is next to the book name and in large print in the text.
The verse numbers are found within the text in small print.
Find the book first, then the chapter, then the verse.
REMEMBER: Book, chapter, verse…. Say it to yourself:
BOOK….. CHAPTER…. VERSE…. BOOK….. CHAPTER…. VERSE….

Find the following passages using the Scripture Reference system. Write ‘Old’ or ‘New’ for the Testament in which it is found, then write what the passage of scripture says.
REMEMBER: First use the contents page to help you find the book, then use the
Scripture Reference system.
