Students must be prepared to understand whatever changes the future holds. Therefore, the goal of this science course is not to just memorize facts, but to understand and apply these facts. Earth and Space Science will help students develop life-long skills and discover how science relates to their lives. Overview: The course is divided into two semesters. In the fall we will focus on the nature of Earth, its formation, systems, structure, and processes. In the spring we will focus on the Earth as related to living organisms to develop a strong foundation for Biology.Grading: Mastery High30 Points (Tests and Projects)Mastery Moderate High20 Points (Quizzes and Labs)Mastery Moderate10 Points (Notebook Checks and Internet Assignments) Mastery Minor 5 Points (Exit Tickets and INB Assignments) SuppliesRequired: An oversized spiral notebooks (8.5” x 11” – Five star works well) Blue or black pen Pencil with eraser Highlighter Colored pencils Glue sticks*Optional: scissors, metric ruler, pencil sharpener*These are available in the classroom, but students will have to share, unless they bring their own.Class Procedures/ExpectationsStudents are expected to: come to class everyday you are able, arrive on time with your own supplies and be ready to participate, follow directions the 1st time, stay on task during all work times, be respectful and courteous to the teacher and to each other at all times.Students need to keep an organized notebook. Your notebook will be your lifeline this year because it will contain all notes and assignments. If you lose it, you will have to start a new one and re-do the assignments, etc. that you lost …notebooks are graded or quizzed throughout the year. Refer to Interactive Notebook (INB) guidelines for more details.Students are expected to complete make-up work in a timely manner—one day for every day they are absent. To make-up a test, quiz, or lab, you will need to make arrangements with Mrs. Poirier to come in before or after school.Students will be expected to develop good note taking skills. The students will be learning how to take Cornell style notes, write study questions & summaries.Reading the textbook is highly recommended.If you are struggling academically or personally, please see me immediately. I am here to help you. How can I help you, if I do not know you are having difficulties? Tutoring and CommunicationI will be available every day after school until approximately 3:30 PM in room 149. If this does not work with your schedule please see me and we will make other arrangements. My webpage is currently under construction (August 2015) but will have a running Table of Contents, agendas, powerpoint notes, printable hand-outs, and supplemental materials that can help you succeed in science.
