Copy the tally chart below onto a piece of paper. Mark a tally for each feature that you find. When you are done take a look at your chart and answer the following questions: Which feature did you find the most? Why do you think it was the most? Which feature did you find the least? Why do you think it was the least? Was there a feature you couldn’t find? Why? How many features did you find in all? Which feature do you feel is the most helpful when reading? Why is it so helpful? Nonfiction Text FeatureTalliesTable of Contents Caption Index Photograph IllustrationGraph Heading Labels Glossary Maps Bold Print2) Play Homophone Go Fish or Memory. Using the list of homophones listed below with the activity pages create playing cards by writing words on index cards. Students match homophones, like ate and eight or to and two, while playing a “Go Fish” game. 1. Place the homophone word cards face down in a stack at the center. 2. Student one gives seven cards to each player and places the remaining cards face down in a stack. 3. Students check their cards for matching homophones, read them, and place the matching sets down. 4. Taking turns, student one asks for a specific homophone for one of the cards he is holding (e.g., “Do you have a card that says “eight?”) 5. If yes, the card is given to student one who reads each homophone. Holds each card up separately and uses in a sentence (i.e., “Ate, I ate all my pizza. Eight, eight is an even number”). Takes another turn. If no, student two says, “Go Fish.” Student one selects the top card from the stack. 6. Reverse roles and continue until all cards are matched.Students match homophones by playing a memory game. 1. Place the homophone cards face down in rows. 2. Taking turns, students turn over two cards. Read the word cards aloud and say the meaning of each word. If the cards match, place the matched cards aside. If the cards do not match, return the cards face down in their original spots. 3. Continue until all the cards are matched.Lesson Links: For BrainPop and Wixie, click the “Sign in with Clever” option Monday: Abe Lincoln brainpop: Tuesday: Wixie example: ; Brainpopjr video: ; Nonfiction review video: Hundreds Chart Strategy (Addition): Base 10 Block Strategy (Addition): Open Number Line Strategy (Addition): Partial Sums Strategy: Wednesday: Hundreds Chart Strategy (Subtraction): Base 10 Block Strategy (Subtraction): Open Number Line Strategy (Subtraction): Partial Differences: Thursday: Fact Fluency: BrainPopJr. Homonym Video: Wixie Homophone Activity: “Dear Deer” Read Aloud: Office Hours: (contact the teacher to set up a meeting)Katie Datin: Wednesdays, 10:00-11:00 datinkl@pwcs.edu Melinda Jones: Wednesday 11:00-12:00 jonesmy@pwcs.edu Elizabeth Osche: Thursdays, 1:00-2:00 oscheec@pwcs.edu Michelle Barnes: Mondays 10:00 – 11:00 barnesmm@pwcs.eduCasey Leslie: Tuesdays, 1:00-2:00 lesliecd@pwcs.edu Ame Bodnarchuk: Mondays 10:00- 11:00 bodnarag@pwcs.eduCatherine Cabral (Special Education): Wednesdays 10:00-11:00 carbrac@pwcs.edu Kayla Sargent: Tuesdays 12:00- 1:00 sargenkm@pwcs.edu Amanda Schlesinger (Counseling): Wednesday’s 11:00-12:00 schlesa@pwcs.edu Johanna Hermanson (ESOL): Fridays 6:00-7:00 flythejm@pwcs.edu Encore Office Hours:Mrs. Matice- Science: Wednesday 10:00-11:00AM maticejl@pwcs.eduMrs. Dunphy – ITC: Wednesday 10:00-11:00AM dunphyml@pwcs.eduDr. Cherry – Art Wednesday 10:00-11:00AM cherryla@pwcs.eduMrs. Ross – Library Monday 2:00 – 3:00PM RossSj@pwcs.eduDr. Ware – Music: Friday 9:00 – 10:00AM warepl@pwcs.eduMr. Long – PE: Monday 9:00 – 10:00AM longn@pwcs.eduMr. Raines – PE Wednesday 1:00 – 2:00PM rainesje1@pwcs.eduMs. Pine-START Monday 2:00-3:00 PM pinebx@pwcs.edu Mrs. Barbour- Reading Specialist Friday 2:00-3:00 barboufh@pwcs.edu ................
