The eme performs many criminal activities as well as having their own way of communication such as through gang signs and slang. They can also be very territorial and are spreading more and more throughout the US. The Mexican mafia has their way of identifying its members and leaders through symbols as well as tattoos.The Mexican mafia was established in the 1950s in CA at the Devel Vocational institution. The gang was known as La Eme which in English stands for M. The Mexican mafia is a named shared by four and extremely powerfully prison gangs in the southwestern US are CA Mexican Mafia, Texas Mexican Mafia, Arizona Mexican Mafia and Arizona New Mexican mafia. HistoryLuis Flores was the creator of La eMe, he was also known as Huero Buff. The gang was first created to protect themselves from other prison gangs. They would protect themselves from overzealous guards and band together to battle black and white inmates. Making peace with enemies was something no one thought was possible and he had the power to do so. Luis had created the gang La eMe and only recruited violent gangsters to the gang so he could have a much feared gang who could control the illegal activities of the Deuel prison. The beginning of the goal was to bring terror to the prison system and enjoy prison while being locked up. The Mexican Mafia is based in the California Prisons but are also active in many other southwest states and along the pacific of the US. La eMe is active in 13 states. Mostly males are members of the gangs. The gang grew and evolved into a predatory criminal organization.( Walker Robert.)Membership/Hierarchy All members in the California gang La eMe are equal in power to one another. However some members are more influential than others due to the contacts they maintain in the streets. Violet members are housed in the Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City, California. The gang calls this prison White House. In the White House many of the important decisions are made, such as the approval of the Green Light. They have control of the streets and there political issues. Where ever the gang is present in prison they have control over the Hispanic inmate population. The Texas Mexican Mafia is comprised of Mexican American or Hispanic inmates. For the Texas Mexican Mafia there is a president, vice president and the general members. Arizona Mexican mafia members are also Hispanic inmates. With both new and old gang. Old mafia has a paramilitary leadership structure. The New Mexican mafia is highly organized. There are two co-leaders. The seven member takes major decisions for the gang in consultation with the two main leaders. (Walker Robert.)RulesMembers of La eMe were required to perform at least one hit or knifing. A members status in La eMe where based on the dedication and seniority. If one wants to put in dedication to the gang it is measured by how many assaults they engage in. Over time the gang rules have evolved. Now it takes vote from three members to vote a probationary member in. they also have to have a vote to kill a fellow gang member. Most of the new gang members gain respect by killing a former gang member who violated the rules. La eMe instructs its members to strictly follow all rules. The main three rules are no informing, no homosexual acts and no cowardice. The consequences of breaking any of these rules result in death (Rachelle Cochran). To be member of La eMe you could not be homosexual. You may not be informant or a rat, or they will kill you. You could not be a coward. A member could not raise a hand against another meber without sanction. Do not show disrespect for any members family, including sex with anothers members wife or girlfriend. Do not steal from any other member and a member must not interfere with anothers members business activities(Rene Enriquez).ConstitutionFor the Mexican Mafia the constitution consists of twelve rules. The first rule is Membership is for life which also means blood in blood out. Second rule is that every member must be prepared to sacrifice his life or take a life at any time when necessary. Third every member shall strive to overcome his weakness to achieve discipline with the Mexicanemi brotherhood. Fourth you can never let anyone in the gang down. Fifth rule is a member is a sponsor of a new member if they miss up the sponsor pays for the behavior. Sixth if someone in the gang is mistreated by someone outside the gang or on the streets they must all destroy the person. Seventh have a high level of integrity. Eighth do not let anyone’s business out to anyone. Ninth every member can express what is on their minds. Tenth members have the right to arm and protect the gang. Eleventh every gang member has to have a tattoo of their symbol. And the last rule they have is criminal interest for monetary benefits.LocationThe original Mexican mafia operates in California from within the state and federal prions system. It also extends to the streets of California. They maintain strict control of the drug distribution in southern California and increasing there territory into the central and northern California. In Texas the Mexican Mafia is headquartered in San Antonio. Its members have also expanded to Austin and Houston. In Arizona the Mexican Mafia has appeared to be limited.( Walker Robert.)Criminal ActivitiesLa eMe is involved in a wide range of criminal activity both within and outside of the prison system. La eMe primary source of income is distributing cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine to the streets. They also control prostitution and gambling. The Texas Mafia are involved in smuggling drugs, aliens, and firearms. Gang members of the Texas mafia also are involved in auto theft, robberies, home invasions, homicides and contract assassinations. Both the old and new Mexico mafia involved in a range of criminal activites to include drug trafficking, extortion and sanctioned homicides. Inside prsion the Mafia controls drug trafficking, extortion, prostitution and other illegitimate activities that involve Hispanic inmates. Outside of the prison the New Mexico Mafia are a major influence on a number of criminal street gang sets. They tax the gang and drug dealers for any drugs sold in their territories. ()Gang IdentifiersLa eMe uses a variety of identifiers in tattoos and artwork. All of their work contain the letter M and some of the Aztec symbol terms. The number 13 is also used to represent the letter M because it is the 13th letter in the alphabet. The national symbol is also used as a tattoo the represent the gang. A tattoo you will see on a gang member would be an eagle and a snake on a flaming circle on crossed knifes. Another tattoo would be a hand print with the letters EME inside which means when the hands touch you, you go to work. Texas Mafia also use a number of letters and symbols to signify inclusion in the gang. They are called Mexikanemi which in there term they use the initials EMI. There tattoo symbol is a Mexican eagle in a feathered war shield over crossed machetes and the word Aztlan which refers to the home land of the Aztecs. For the old Mexican mafia one common tattoo of this group includes the letters MM surrounding a rose underneath a skull with wings and the word EME written on top of the skull. The Arizona New Mexican mafia tattoos worn by members of this group including a skill and the letters MM with a circle of fire, some gangs will have a single rose seen with this tattoo. ().PowerThe Mexican Mafia is the most powerful gang inside and outside the prison according the law enforcement. They are a violent and well organized criminal organization in the United States and in Mexico. The only had members who were willing to kill inside and out of the prison walls. It started with only 13 inmates who where Hispanic from East Los Angeles. The corrections felt threated by this gang because it was so powerful never thinking a gang could have reached to be so violent. Nuestra FamiliaNuestra Familia is also a gang that was involved with La eMe. They aslo call them selfs “NF” it was also formed by the latinos in the mid-1960’s. They got involved with La eMe also to protect the Latinos in prison. NF wanted the younger inmates to have protection from the more experienced inmates. NF have a different symbol for La eMe and a number. There tattoo is a picture of a sombrero and a bloody dagger with the words Nuestraa Familia or the letters NF with a sword. This Latinos gang adopted the number 14 because N represents the number 14 in the alphabet (Alfonso j. Valdez). American Methe Mexican mafia was future in a movie called American Me. Edward James Olmos was the actor who allegedly received death threats by members of the Mexican mafia. The members thought this movie was unflattering depiction of the gang. After the film had released three consultants for the film were murdered. The member where also mad at the fact that Olmos part in the movie he was raped and they felt it has be trade there homosexually beliefs. After the movie Olmos had applied for a gun permit and it was denied to him. Joe Morgan who was serving life sentence for murder filed a $500,000 lawsuit because he felt that the film was based on him without obtaining his permission (in popular culture).There are many different types of gang related actives that happened in the United States. The Mexican Mafia is one that has spread worldwide and have the most powerful members. Stared from prison inside the gates and spread outside in to the streets. Became bigger then it was planned.
