April 22, 2019

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Viva fiesta! Viva Texas! – I am a native San Antonian. So, I grew up with Fiesta. Every year a big party, celebrating Texas independence. I sat watching parades and ended up marching in them when I was in High School. If you are reading this and marched in the Fiesta parades, you know how tiring it is, but you also know it is a lot of fun. It is a unique part of our city, but it has so much more meaning than just the party. Both sides of my family lived in Texas before it was Texas. My father was born in Brownsville, and my mother was born in Marfa. My Great-Great Grandfather was a trucker of sorts, driving a horse drawn freight wagon between San Antonio and Monclova, Mexico. A trip that took about 4 months to go and return. I say that to say that I have a very special love for Texas and San Antonio. It is home. But, much like our country that I love as well, it is a home that had to be fought for to secure. That struggle included great sacrifice endured at the Alamo, and final victory at San Jacinto. The latter is the reason for our celebration. When liberty was secured it was not by trained soldiers, but by common people. They were of various races and origins, but they became Texans once and for all. I see it every day in the wonderful diversity we enjoy every day at MacArthur. That is the legacy they left us. So, we commemorate that victory and the establishment of the great State of Texas with a grand fiesta. This year, our Brahma band will perform in the Battle of Flowers Band Festival, and the Battle of Flowers Parade, along with our Brahma Dance and Cheer. Our Brahma Student Council will man one of the floats in the Battle of Flowers Parade. It is a great time for MAC to shine.

As we enjoy the festivities this week, I ask you to be safe, to enjoy, but to take a minute to remember and appreciate this great city and State. Happy Fiesta! Go Brahmas!

Here is all the news for the week:

ACTIVITIES -

MAC THEATER – Our amazing Brahmas performed their production of A Lie of the Mind in Regional competition on Monday, April 15th. They gave a fantastic performance. Unfortunately, they did not advance to State. They finished 4th in a very tough competition. Emily Fleming received a Tech Award. Matthew Dominguez and Christopher Lodge Received Honorable mention, and Olivia Velazquez was named to the All-Star Cast. Competing and advancing to four levels, our actors were awarded 5 Honorable Mention All Star Cast, 7 All Star Cast, Best Actor and Best Actress recognitions. They ended as one of 24 top 6A drama departments in the state! This Wednesday there will be two performances in the MAC auditorium 5 and 7 pm. Admission is only $3. If you have not seen the play, you need to come to one of these performances.

A Lie of the Mind is a dark comedy/tragedy concerning two families who are connected by the marriage of Jake, the son of one family, to Beth who is the daughter of the other. The playwright, Sam Shepard, one of America’s most forward dramatists, has created a play that is filled with poetry, action and high stakes. Characters mistake the living for the dead, one brother for another brother, sons for fathers, sisters for wives - even, at one loony point, a man for a deer. Sometimes the people can't remember their own identities: Beth and her mother both mistake themselves for a lobotomized family matriarch. The play concerns mature content but is rooted in the heartache and desire for love.

Congratulations to all of our Brahmas. Come on out and be a part of their final performances. Go Brahma OAP!

MAC SOFTBALL – On Tuesday night, our Lady Brahmas closed out district play against LEE. The first inning Heaven Compton hit a double with bases loaded and scored 3 RBI’s. Katelyn Esparza and Madison Collins and Heaven Compton all had multiple hits in game. Compton led all three hitters with 6 RBI’s in game. Brahmas took a 4 to 0 lead in first inning. They added 3 runs in the second inning, and closed it out with 8 runs in the third inning. Madison Collins pitched 3 complete innings and threw a shutout as our Lady Brahmas took a 15 to 0 win over LEE. Our Lady Brahmas finished district with an 11 and 3 record, and tied with South San for 2nd place. The tie-breaker was played on Thursday evening. The Brahmas scored one run in the first inning, but they were matched by South San to tie the game at 1 all. Our Brahmas took the lead in the second inning 2 to 1, but South San had a big third inning, adding 3 runs and taking a 4 to 2 lead. But our Lady Brahmas answered in the fifth inning, adding 5 runs to take the lead back 7 to 4. South San added 1 run in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, our Lady Brahmas added 1 run, while South San added 2 runs leaving the tying run on base. With the score at MAC 8 and South San 7, our Lady Brahmas held off the Lady Bobcats to take the 8 to 7 win and finish 2nd in District 27-6A!

Our Lady Brahmas now go to the playoffs. They will take on O’Connor for Bi-District in a three game series. The first game will be at 7 pm Thursday at the NE West field. The second game will be Friday at 12 noon at NISD #1 field. If a third game is necessary, it will be Saturday at 1 pm at the NE West field. Get ready to get out and support our Lady Brahmas as they start their playoff run! Go Lady Brahma Softball!

MAC BASEBALL – On Tuesday, our Brahmas were at the NE Sports Park taking on Churchill. Our Brahmas opened up with 2 runs in the first inning. Churchill answered with 1 run in the second inning, but the Brahmas added another run in the third inning to take a 3 to 1 lead. Both teams scored 1 run in the fifth inning, but the Brahmas tok a big lead in the sixth inning, adding 4 runs for an 8 to 2 lead. Churchill would add 1 run in the seventh inning, but it would not be enough, as the Brahmas took the 8 to 3 win. On Thursday the Brahmas were at BAC facing off with Madison. It was a big night for the Brahmas, as they went on a score fest! The Mavericks opened with 3 runs in the first inning, and were answered with 1 run of their own. Madison took a 5 to 4 lead in the second inning, but that is when the Brahmas broke free, scoring 8 runs in the third inning. Madison would add runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but it would not be enough, as the the Brahmas took a 17 to 7 win over Madison in 6 innings. Our Brahmas had 5 home runs on the evening. Jace Jung scored 2 HR’s, Carson Fairall had 2 HR’s, and Chris Shull had 1 HR.

Our Brahmas are now 6 and 6 in district with two big games this week. On Tuesday at 7:15 pm they will be back at NE Sports Park to take on Reagan.
