Function of the Post:

As a key member of the Finance team, this role will provide a technical function within the Finance department in areas of treasury, financial accounting, financial controls and taxation, in order to meet reporting deadlines, the most significant being the Annual Report and Financial Statements, ensuring a robust and professional finance function, including the identification, efficiency review and documentation of processes.

The role will be required to liaise and build strong relationships with internal stakeholders including members of the Vice-Chancellor’s Group and of the Finance Department, and external stakeholders including internal & external auditors.

This role is a member of the Finance team and will deputise for the Head of Financial Services. It will work closely and assist in the development of one of the members of the team.

Principal Accountabilities:

The post holder will:

• Lead in the preparation of the annual accounts, both consolidated and for the subsidiary, co-ordinating the activities of staff across the Finance Department to deliver accurate and timely accounts and ensure a clean and efficient external audit, identifying opportunities for increased efficiency and to implement the appropriate changes.

• Lead on the monthly cashflow forecasting to provide accurate and timely information for senior management and external stakeholders, looking out for opportunities for improvement, in terms of accuracy, design & format, and supporting the delivery of sound treasury management.

• Support the month-end process in the reporting of I&E, balance sheet and cash-flow statements, preparing forecasts, covenant calculations, KPI calculations (eg debtors aging, DSO), and provide input into the annual planning process in accordance with the agreed timetable.

• Oversee the monthly balance sheet reconciliation process, ensuring completeness and accuaracy and investigating issues and differences as they arise. Providing support and training to staff where necessary, to help maintain the accuracy of financial reporting.

• Oversee the maintenance of the fixed asset register and provide guidance on the accounting of fixed assets, including accuracy over disposals. Support the Estates Management Accountant as required on the process of capital budgeting, reporting and forecasting, ensuring robust and accurate reporting of all capital projects and expenditure across the University.

• Provide support to the Head of Financial Services on taxation matters, predominantly VAT and IR35, and also Corporation Tax, and provide cover in their absence.

• Work with other team members to meet the reporting requirements of the University’s regulatory body, OfS, and other external bodies, and for assigned areas acting as the main point of contact and coordinating the regulatory finance returns.

• Supporting the treasury function in areas such as on-line banking and administration

• Support the wider Finance team in providing analysis as required from time to time, process improvement and documentation

• To oversee the administration and changes to ABW (Agresso), co-ordinate testing due to system upgrades, design and develop management reporting as required, and work with the wider Finance team to eliminate all financial offline information

• Internal audit – work on recommendations / business process documentation as required

• Supporting other Finance staff in their professional and personal development.

• Deputise for the Head of Financial Services as required including representation at senior management level and delegated approver.

Key Attributes for the role:

• Many of the tasks within this role have fixed deadlines, either statutory, external or internal, ranging from daily to annual. The post holder will be required to plan their work, including any necessary collaboration with colleagues, in order to ensure that the deadlines are met.

• The post holder will be expected to respond to requests for ad hoc tasks from other members of the Finance team, being able to prioritise these tasks alongside regular reporting requirements.

• The post holder will be expected to formulate and compile forecasts based upon advice and knowledge from colleagues and advisors. There will be a requirement to apply knowledge, experience and judgement as well as analytical and interpretive skills in order to arrive at the forecasts

• Success in many parts of this role is dependent on building good relationships and communication with other members of the Finance department and external parties.
