Equestrian Project Manager

Responsible to: Vice Principal, Sense College

Payscale: £21,000 (spot salary)

Description of Role

The Equestrian Project Manager is responsible for the provision of an innovative service which provides riding/ carriage driving/ small animal and land-based activities to people from Sense College; other people receiving a Sense service; and a number of external clients, including a regular pony club and Family Days and the facilitation of a local RDA group. People using accessing the service may have multiple sensory impairments, physical and/or learning disabilities; therefore the service is highly specialist and responsive to need.

In order to achieve this, the Manager will assume responsibility for the overall health and welfare of all animals on site and for the management of the site to the highest standards. The Manager will also assume responsibility for the management of paid staff and volunteers to ensure the running of a safe and highly valued service.

Key responsibilities:

• Responsible for the overall health and welfare of all animals on site; including maintaining good paddock hygiene, removal of droppings and safe disposal on adjacent farmyard. Liase with vets, farriers and dentists as necessary, and maintain appropriate documentation

• Responsible for the purchase and training of horses and ponies, as required, to maintain provision of service

• Ensure that horses and ponies are safe and fit to use on a day by day basis

• Recruit and manage a team of paid staff and volunteers. Undertake the supervision and appraisal of staff in accordance with Sense policy, and hold regular team meetings. Provide direction to paid staff and volunteers; and to support staff from other services/external providers, including facilitating induction training as needed

• Responsible for devising and operating a staff rota which ensures continuity of service, including early morning, evening and weekend shifts as required

• Manage and work within a delegated budget. Purchase and maintain adequate stocks of feed, bedding and small items of equipment. Liase with appropriate colleagues to plan for purchase of larger items and renewals

• Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for everyone accessing the site; including the assessment and management of risk, in accordance with current legislation and Sense policies and procedures. Maintain records and routine checks to ensure safe use and maintenance of tractor and associated equipment

• Comply with organisational requirements for self-audit; be aware of, and deliver the service to. KPIs as set out by Operational Services. Maintain up to date knowledge of Sense policies and guidance, and external frameworks and legislation which have a bearing on the service. Attend in-house and external meetings, as required

• Responsible for tailoring the activities offered to meet needs and requirements; liasing with colleagues from other services to achieve this. Liase with other Sense services (e.g. sense College) and external providers to coordinate planning to meet individual’s needs, aims and objectives. Maintain documentary evidence for accredited education courses, as required

• Maintain a good relationship with the landlord and his representatives

• Be available to host occasional visits from Sense leadership and fundraising teams and external stakeholders, as required. Act as a representative of Sense in all contact with external professionals, families, carers and members of the public, and to protect the reputation of the organisation

• Engage with Sense colleagues and external stakeholders to plan and implement further development of the service, as required

• Ensure the whole site is maintained to a standard suitable to receive visitors; including gardens, stable yard and wider area

• Undertake continuing professional development, and support the professional development of staff

• Be available to attend and deal with any ‘out of hours’ emergency which may arise, and which may affect the safe operation of the service and/or the well-being of livestock

• Any other duties commensurate with the nature and grade of the role
