PROM NIGHT

PROM NIGHT

by Amanda Epstein

Prom night is usually a time of crazy partying, where .graduating Seniors Seniors who are graduating have their last night of fun as high school students before going High School-ers [any other word here?], off unto the big world (and parties) of college. Prom at Miami Beach Senior High will take took place on May 10th, 2008 at Parrot Jungle Island, where many Juniors, Seniors and their dates will gathered for a few hours before moving onto the late-night partying.

Most after-r parties that Beach High students attended took place at hotel roomsdwill plan on attending will take place at hotel rooms. Many of these students rented and invited their friends to these hotel rooms where they will planned to be “drinkinking, smokeing and [haveing] sex” according to a senior who prefers to remain anonymous. Other seniors and juniors answered similarly, and also preferring to remain anonymous, said responded they were going to be “partying and getting wasted” or “drinking, having fun, getting crazy”.

One Junior student, Anthony Lawson says that he went to an after party in a hotel on Brickell Key. “We hung out and talked about the year” he says. Nevertheless, alcohol was of course a key element to the fun, and so was the ‘weed’. He also relates that “the hotel would not let more than 10 people up to the room. We had people jumping the gates to get in.”

It is no doubt that these after parties can get out of hand. Alcohol is never far behind, and in some cases drugs aren’t either.

Still, mMost of these students involved in these activities though, agreed that they only dido this because prom is a ‘special occasion’. “It’s my f***ing [can I put this or should I just not write it in at all?] Senior year! It happens only one time in your whole life!!” responds a student. I think you could keep it for now, if anything Mr. Weiss will take it out…

[But while these students stayedare out partying until late hours of the night, some students agreed that their parents wouldn’t necessarily not approve. One student said her parents “trust me [her] to be responsible” but meanwhile also responded that she would be consuming alcohol. Another student said that they would approve because “…they know I drink and know I’m on birth control.” ] SHOULD I INCLUDE THIS PARAGRAPH?

The teachers of Miami Beach High also attended prom and had their prom nights. Gerald Klein, American Economics & Government teacher and part of the Miami Beach High School graduating class of 1955 had a prom experience most students today probably wouldn’t even dream of seeing in movies.

As he tells his story, he starts out with saying that he had a date, and that she was really pretty, but that he can’t remember her name. His graduating class was the first to have their prom at the Fontainebleau Hotel, which had opened only a month before.

“We had a band” he relates, “We didn’t just have disc jockeys… We paid over $800 for them; that, I do remember.” He also recalls that the girls used to wear crinolines. Crinolines are sort of plastic hoops worn under a full skirt to keep it belled out.

“The idea behind it was that the dress would puff out” says Klein, “You couldn’t have a lot of boys and girls on the dance floor because the dresses were so big. It was also a little hard to dance the faster dances…”

Klein also commented upon the excellent food that was served to each individual as opposed to a buffet style meal. He recalls in a state of happiness that the tickets sold for $50 per each couple. Ah, those were the good days…

But while the after parties today involve late-night drinking and heavy, crowded hotel room partying, Klein reminisces, “We went out to a nightclub afterwards and The Vagabonds was the name of the group that was there, I remember. They were a singing team and had a little bit of comedy with it.”

Carlos Rodriguez, a chemistry teacher at Miami Beach High revives the night of his hours after prom.

“I remember that a lot of us came over to Miami Beach and some people went skinny dipping in the ocean. It was the high light of the evening. It was kind of like, our after party” he describes “But our things were more informal. There was no such thing as an after party [like today]. You just went with your friends and hung out.”

Although there were many students of Beach High that were involved in drinking , smoking, and etc through this 2008 prom, there were also many others that did not. One senior said that she did not go to any after parties after prom, did not drink, and instead “missed out on the partying, but had a lot of fun”.

Proms before were nothing like what they are today. Still, although they may have had some good aspects, the bad are never far behind. It’s just a matter of humanity that some people will always do the ‘wrong’ things, whether it be 1955, 1972, or 2008. It is the severity and summation of the people that do the ‘wrong’ things that has progressed over time.

But hopefully, humanity, or more importantly the students of Miami Beach High will opt for the good, and will continue to opt for the good in the years to come.

Roberta’s Notes:

Wow, you put us seniors out there! L0l, just kidding! It seems to be really interesting, though. I just hope they don’t cancel prom in the future because of this article l0l. Anyway, not every senior at Beach High is a drug-crazed, drink-crazed, sex-crazed teenager. I went to prom/an after party and didn’t drink a single drop or smoked or lost my virginity l0l. So, just to keep the story balanced, make sure you get some quotes from seniors who didn’t do anything bad.

And this may also be interesting; ask Ms. Rivero, the Activities Director, about whetheror not the rumor that prom was going to be cancelled if 300 students didn’t buy tickets was true, and ask her if they did in fact sell at least 300.
