THEME: Bowling for FAiRNESS. (Always spelled ALL CAPS with a little ‘i’)

The children are divided into four team for this unit based on sex and grade:

TEAM ONE: Boys Grades 1,3,5 (odd grades) The Boy Bombers!

TEAM TWO: Girls Grades 1,3,5 The Go Girl Gang!

TEAM THREE: Boys Grades 2,4,6 (even grades) The Boy Battalion!

TEAM FOUR: Girls Grades 2,4,6 The Girl Gladiators!

THE BOWLING GAMES (modify according to the equipment you have)

SEE PICTURES AT THE END OF THIS DOCUMENT.

Each team will play one ONE GAME EACH WEEK, based on which game their TEAM NAME is above. They won’t know that the first week, which plays into the lesson. Points earned are recorded at each game location and totaled each week.

GAME ONE: GIANT DEW BOWL

Two giant Mountain Dew bottles set up (3 foot tall banks). The kids roll TWO smilie Wal-Mart volleyballs (or any two large balls) at the same time toward both bottles. ONLY ONE TRY!

1000 points for each pin, or… 3000 if they knock down both.

GAME TWO: MINI-BOWL w/ 20 PINS

I have two sets of mini-pins (only one inch tall) and a large marble for each. Set up all 20 pins on one end of a long table. The kids get to roll BOTH large marbles and try to knock down as many as possible. (You will need something along the edge of the table to keep the ball on the table)

1000 points for each pib, or… 25,000 points if they knock down all 20!

GAME THREE: ALIEN HOVER BOWL!

I got four sets of an alien hover ball game at the Disney store. The kids get 3 chances to knock down as many of the 12 pins as possible. (Game came with 4, using 3 in case one hovor ball breaks over the month)

1000 points for each pin, or… 15,00 points if they knock down all 12!

GAME FOUR: BEACH BOWL!

I got a beach ball bowling kit at Kohl’s on sale. Several extra pins set up as well. Pins did not stand on the towel well, so I put them off the end of towel.

1000 points for each pin, or… 12,000 for all 10!

NOTE: Obviously you will not be able to duplicate these games exactly. Use what you have, but the point is just to make the game different in number of pins, balls, and skill required to fit lesson.

OVERVIEW OF LESSON POINTS:

B = Better

O = Others

W = with

L = Love

MAIN POINTS:

FAiRNESS COMES WITH TIME

The kids will think the games unfair the first week when you announce the winner. But once you explain that each team will play all four over the four weeks, they will see that it is fair over all. Fairness is usually not instant - it happens over time.

FAiRNESS REQUIRES ARE HELP

The kids will notice that the teams have a different amount of players. But once they see that they need to come to church and play to help it be fair, they will see that it is fair over all, because any team could have more players. Fairness happens when everyone does their part. It would only be unfair if you limited the size of one team, but not the others.

FAiRNESS IS NEVER SELFISH

Kids are quick to cry “Not Fair” but it is usually when they think THEY have not been treated fairly. Rarely, if ever, is it because they are noticing the injustice of another (or themselves!)

POINT TO EMPHASIZE: FAiR with a little ‘i’ goes FAR!

When you feel you are not being treated FAIR - drop the ‘i’ and go FAR:

F = FAITH, trust that God is in control and loves you and sees what is happening.

A = ACCEPT everything as from God, even if it doesn’t appear fair at the time.

R = REMEMBER the blessings and good things that have already happened. Often

we are slow to remember the things we already got. How many parents have to

say, “Don’t you remember, I have you….” or “you got to….”

|Gus / Molly |GUS: (prep the ousted kids ahead of time!) Gus comes out and makes some kids move out of the front row so his favorites can |

| |sit there. Has kids he knows move up to the front row and makes the kids in the front row move back. Karl corrects him - he |

| |says he was only kidding and illustrating what James describes in his book. (Go over the passage) Talk about when we show |

| |favorites. Try the power of ‘you can go first’ or ‘looking for those who are overlooked’ |

|Bible Passage |James 2:1-5; 7b-9a |

|Skit |LEMONADE STAND - PART 1 |

|First service - show video|A kid has a lemonade stand, but gives a different price to every person / different amounts of drink / ice free, or extra |

| |charge… finally gets hauled off by mob! |

|Bottom Line |Everyone is important to God, so be careful how you treat them. |

|Object Lesson |Colored Sun Glasses: They protect your eyes, but they also change the way you view the world. There is another type of |

| |‘glasses’ we were - they are our opinions of people. Sometimes we see people differently than they really are because |

| |something is coloring our view of the world. We need to see people the way God sees them. |

|Molly |MOLLY: (Ask Miss Molly letter) Molly gets a letter asking what to do when a popular girl was her friend for a week and now |

| |doesn’t want to be her friend any more. Molly explains that it is better to avoid friends like that, and instead, look to |

| |MAKE FRIENDS… if you are a friend to everyone, you will never lack for friends. If you try to be friends only with popular |

| |kids, you will always be short friends. |

|Sword Drill |SWORD DRILL - have kids look up and review the Sword Drill Verses if there is extra time. (Try to at least do 2-3 verses a |

| |week) |

|Challenge |“That’s Not Fair!” We usually cry out ‘UNFAIR’ when we think that WE are not being treated fairly. Few people bother to think|

| |about unfairness to OTHERS. This week, look for someone ELSE who is being treated unfairly and make it right. |

| |A kid has a lemonade stand, but won’t serve anyone, while he has one price for everyone, for each he has a reason why he |

| |doesn’t serve their type. Finally gets carried off by the mob again. ( |

|Gus |Gus is in his yard! All banged up and hurt! He’s been robbed! Karl brings him out. He is all hurt and can’t believe no one |

| |would help him! Says that one of the pastors came by and saw him, but was too busy! And then a Sunday school teacher, and |

| |even some kids, but they said they didn’t have time to help him! He wondered if ANYONE would care enough to help him! Just |

| |then, MOLLY comes to the window and shows GREAT concern for Gus! No! cries Gus, not HER! Not a GIRL! But Karl says that Molly|

| |is being like the Good Samaritan, sometimes God uses the least likely to help us – and we need to help people no matter what.|

| |Karl talks about the Good Samaritan story (summarizing) and then takes Gus to Molly’s house and leaves him there much to his |

| |horror! And Molly’s delight! |

|Bible Passage |Luke 10:25-37: The Good Samaritan |

| |Who is a ‘samaritan’ in your life? Someone you don’t really like – who is different – who is mean to you – who doesn’t |

| |deserver your help or friendship. |

|Skit |LEMONADE STAND - PART 3 |

| |Another kid sets up a competing booth on the other side of Kids Church. His stand boasts “We undersell the competition.” Each|

| |time the first stand lowers its price, he lowers his too! Finally, fist stand has no business… until the new one runs out of |

| |lemonade! They start to return to the old booth, but the owner of old one, goes over and offers some lemonade powder to the |

| |‘enemy’ and he is so surprised he says he is sorry and they decide to combine their stands and go into business together. |

|Gus |GUS – has a present for Karl. He unwraps it, and it is a Star Wars toy! Karl is confused, it isn’t his birthday or any |

| |special occasion, so why did Gus give him the present? Gus says that he was reading his Bible and saw verse Luke 6:31 where |

| |it says “Do to others as you would have them do to you” and he got to thinking, what would he wish Pastor Karl would do for |

| |him, and he thought, “I’d love it if PK gave me a Star Wars toy” so he went and bought him one instead! Karl says thanks for |

| |the gift, and that it is a great example of giving, and that usually when kids cry ‘UNFAIR!’ they are wanting something for |

| |themselves, but instead they should remember those times and do to others instead what we wish would happen to us. Karl is so|

| |proud of Gus for doing a good thing and not messing up the lesson like he usually does! As they are returning to Gus’ house, |

| |Gus asks, ‘So when do I get my Star Wars toy?’ OOOPS! Now they have to talk about how we are to give and do to others without|

| |thought of what we might get in return, otherwise our motive is still selfish. We need to give no strings attached. (Gus says|

| |there aren’t any strings on that gift, its mostly plastic!) Karl explains what that means. |

|Bottom Line |BOTTOM LINE: Show God’s love to everyone - even your enemies! |

|Toybox Tale |The Good Bionicle – Season 3, DVD 2 |

|Intro |Tell the kids you love them all so much you want to give them all a kiss! (yuck they will cry!) Then show a bag of Hershey’s |

| |chocolate kisses! Tell the kids you are going to toss them out them, but they need to keep their bottoms in the seat, or |

| |they will lose all their candies! Toss them out in handfuls until the whole bag is empty BUT… only throw to the front rows |

| |or to one side! There will be cries of unfair!! Calm the kids down with ‘don’t worry you’ll all get candy’ but ask how they |

| |felt missing out? Then talk about how in America we have many blessings and many ways to hear and learn about God – church, |

| |bibles, videos, schools, lots of Christian ‘stuff’ , but there are places that don’t have any or have little, and its not |

| |fair, and God wants us to share and spread the news… so then appoint the kids with hand fulls of candy to be ‘CANDY |

| |challenges: |

| |a) Tell them about jesus b) give them a tract c) invite them to church |

ADDITIONAL IDEAS:

|Game |FAIRNESS SCRAMBLE: (As the kids come in to Kids Church they get popsicles sticks - one for each year of their age. 7 year old|

| |kid gets 7, etc.) |

| |Have the children mingle around. Place a table in the center of the room. You will call out a number from one to ten. The |

| |kids are to hold up just that many popsicle sticks and put their extras down on the table(s). Everyone who gets that amount |

| |in the air gets a point. (Kids keep track of their points) If they have too many sticks they must put some down. If they |

| |don’t have enough, they can pick some up off a table(s). Play for several rounds, use all ten digits and repeat a few. When |

| |it is all over, ask who got the most points… they should all be tied for first place! Interesting, when they shared - giving |

| |of their extra, and taking only what they needed - everyone wins! |

SWORD DRILL INSTRUCTIONS:

1. If some children do not know how to do a Sword Drill then first of all explain why the Bible is the Christian's sword.

2. First of all have all the children close their Bibles and hold them by the binder.

3. Shout "Sheathe swords" - at this the children should put their Bibles under their arms.

4. Shout "Draw swords" - the children should now hold their Bibles in the air with straight arms.

5. Tell the children a book, a chapter, and a verse of the Bible, and have them repeat it after you. For example, "John chapter 3 verse 16."

6. Once the children have repeated the reference, shout "Charge" - the children should now try to look up the verse as quickly as possible.

7. The first one to find the reference should shout out the first few words from the verse. In our example, this would be, "For God so..." (KJV). You could also have the children stand up when they get the verse to make it clearer who won.

8. This child would then come out to the front and would keep their Bible open at their verse. They are now in the final.

9. Repeat this until you have 4 or perhaps 5 children in the final.

10. The children should then read their verses and within these verses there should be a word which is the same. The rest of the children should listen to the verses to try and guess the common word.

11. Once the children have read their verses and someone has guessed what the word is, have a Sword Drill just for the finalists.

12. The first one to get the verse should shout out the first couple words as before. This child has then won the sword drill and should then read out this verse.

There are a number of important things that you should try to remember when using a Sword Drill. Some of these relate to the age of the children that you are working with and others relate to how you prepare your Sword Drill.

Preparation

1. Keep the verses small. Remember that the children will have to read these verses out in front of others.

2. Use verses that do not have difficult words that children would struggle to pronounce.

3. Remember that there are certain verses that would not be appropriate for children to read out loud.

4. Always prepare more verses than the number of finalists you expect to have. You never know what could go wrong.

5. Prepare for more than just one translation. Get to know what versions of the Bible the children are using and prepare the verses accordingly.

Application

1. Make sure that all the children know what they are supposed to do and explain the instructions clearly to those who are not sure.

2. Have the finalists stand in a position where you can watch them as well as the rest of the children.

3. While the verses are being read out make sure that the rest of the children are paying attention.

4. Have the winner of the final read out the winning verse. Try and make this verse relate to a theme. This could be the theme of a Bible story that you are about to teach.

IMAGES OF OUR BOWLING GAMES.

NOTE: You probably can’t duplicate these exactly, use what YOU have. The point is just to make them appear ‘not fair’ – some games have way more possible points than others, BUT if you are consistent each week, they learn that fairness takes time (it is fair over four weeks after each team plays each game) and fairness requires participation. (they need to come to church each week for it to be fair, sometimes things are less fair because people don’t do their part!)
