Ena CizmicALCPeriod 8Mrs.KimIn both the movie Dead Poets Society and in my personal experiences, there have been times when I questioned if free thinking is an easy task. Nolan, who replaced Mr.Keating after he was fired says “Free thinkers at 17?.” In some ways, I agree with this statement but I also disagree. I believe that young adults should be able to be free thinkers but there are times when they need some guidance from others. Neil’s dad believes that all individuals are different and some need more discipline than others, while Mr.Keating thinks that young adults at the age of 17 can be free thinkers without having disciplinary rules. Neil, who thinks he should be allowed to be a free thinker goes against his dad’s rules and joins the play that his dad prohibited him from being in. In Dead Poets Society, Neil demonstrates the pros and cons of being a free thinker. The pros and cons of being a free thinker demonstrated by Neil are joining the play and suicide. Neil’s dad always pushed Neil to become a lawyer but Neil didn’t want to be a lawyer, he wanted to be an actor. Therefore, he joined the play. The cons that Neil demonstrates of being a free thinker is after being so pressured by his parents to become a lawyer, he commits suicide. Thinking that he could break the rules behind his dad’s back, his dad found out about him being in the play and pressured him into quitting and becoming a lawyer. Neil didn’t like the idea of quitting something he had enjoyed for a long time so he committed suicide to avoid anymore pressure by his parents. The quote “Free thinkers at 17?,” is something I can agree with. An example is when I made the decision to keep a bad grade away from my parents. My parents had always been so proud of me because I always had good grades and got achievements for them. This time, I knew that my parents would be disappointed in me so I didn’t want to tell them. Of course, I knew that school was important and that lying was a bad thing. I could always open up to my parents and tell them everything but this time I was scared. I thought I hid it well until one day, they got a call from the school telling them about the bad grade. This was a bad decision because hearing from the school rather than me telling them honestly, disappointed them more. Therefore, it is difficult at times to be a free thinker rather than getting the guidance needed from others. In conclusion, rather than putting yourself into a situation to be a free thinker and not always getting positive outcomes, there may be times when you will need discipline and guidance. Neil needed some guidance because his dad was just trying to help him be more successful and he didn’t let that happen, and I should’ve been honest with my parents from the beginning to step away from worst outcomes. I think this topic is important because some people don’t know enough information and think that being a free thinker at a young age is easy. ................
