Minutes

1. 11.25.13 Minutes Approval

There were no objections to the minutes and the Council approves the minutes.

2. Update on Current Liaison Activities

a. North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG)/Primary Care

No updates.

b. Physical Activity and VA

Dr. Adrian Hutber, the Vice President of Exercise is Medicine™ at American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) expressed interested in working with SBM members on a co-sponsored policy paper following the joint programming that will take place at the SBM and ACSM meetings. Dr. Goodrich suggested that SBM’s policy group connect with ACSM policy group given their past experience working with policy initiatives.

c. Decision Making

No updates.

d. Pain

Dr. Cheatle will be speaking with former President of the American Pain Society, Dr. Seddon Savage. Meanwhile, the Pain SIG will be holding two symposia at the SBM Annual Meeting: one in conjunction with the VA and another on pain and addiction.

e. Informatics

Dr. Blackford Middleton of Vanderbilt University is the new President of AMIA. Dr. Sheinfeld Gorin is currently working on scheduling a call with SBM President, Dr. Dawn Wilson and AMIA representatives to discuss the SBM-AMIA liaison. She will also check to see if Dr. Wright can join the call.

f. Evidence Based Behavioral Medicine (EBBM)

Dr. Jacobsen announced that he is on the planning committee for the joint American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS) – International Psychosocial Oncology Society (IPOS) 2015 Annual Meeting. He was looking to the committee to suggest ways that SBM can become involved with the meeting. The Council suggested planning potential sessions on pain and cancer or physical activity and cancer. The relative SIGs could then be involved with the planning of the session. Dr. Jacobsen will contact Dr. Michael Diefenbach, Chair of the Cancer SIG for ideas as well.

Dr. Kay Dickersin of the Cochrane Collaboration will be holding a Midday Meeting at the 2014 Annual Meeting and will speak about the Cochrane Library and software package to do meta analysis. Following the Midday Meeting, Dr. Sheinfeld Gorin would like to hold an invite only lunch that will be an opportunity for key SBM members to get to know Dr. Dickersin and the Cochrane Collaboration. Dr. Sheinfeld Gorin is currently looking for support to fund Dr. Dickersin’s travel and support to fund the lunch. Dr. Ken Resnicow of the EBBM SIG will be asked ideas/feedback on the session.

g. VA and Public Health Law Research (PHLR)

No updates.

h. Other

No updates.

3. Proposed SPLC Manual

Holland circulated the updated version of the SPLC Procedures Manual to the Council. The new version includes an appendix with examples of liaison activities and restrictions. The Council Members that were present on the call did not have any further changes to the Manual, but Dr. Sheinfeld Gorin encouraged Council Members to forward any potential feedback to Holland. If there are no additional changes needed, the Manual will go to the Executive Committee for final approval.
