Education in England and Wales

There are four types of schools in the English and Welsh education system - nursery, primary, secondary and private schools. Scotland has its own education system, which is different. Children start school at the age of five, but there is some free nursery-school education before that age. The state nursery schools are not for all. They are for some families, for example for families with only one parent. In most areas there are private nursery schools. Parents who want their children to go to nursery school pay for their children under 5 years old to go to these private nursery schools.

Primary school is divided into infant school (pupils from 5 to 7 years old) and junior school (from 8 to 11 years old). In some areas there are middle schools instead of junior schools, which take pupils from 9 to 12 years old. Primary schools have from 50-200 pupils.

Secondary schools are usually much larger than primary schools and most children - over 80 per cent - go to a comprehensive school at the age of 11. These schools are for all. Pupils do not need to pass an exam to go to these schools. These schools are large. They have from 1,200 - 2,500 pupils. School lasts all day in the UK, so there is only one shift. In some areas there are grammar schools. Pupils must pass special exams to go to these schools.

Some parents prefer private education. In England and Wales, private schools are called public schools. They are very expensive. Only 5 per cent of the school population goes to public schools. Public schools are for pupils from 5 or 7 to 18 years old. Some public schools are day schools, but many public schools are boarding schools. Pupils live in the school and go home in the holidays.

Activity 1 с Answer the questions.

1 What types of schools are there in England and Wales?

2 What age do children go to school in England and Wales?

3 What types of primary schools are there?

4 What is the difference between comprehensive schools and grammar schools?

5 What are private schools called in England and Wales?

Activity 1 e Find similarities and differences in education between Uzbekistan, the USA and England and Wales. Use 'is different from' and 'is the same as' and 'is not the same as'.

e.g. Kindergarten in the USA is different from kindergarten in Uzbekistan and in England and Wales. Children in the USA go to kindergarten when they are 5 years old, and in Uzbekistan children under 6 years old can go to kindergarten. Nursery school in England and Wales is a little different but the same as kindergarten in Uzbekistan. Children under 5 years old can go to nursery school.

Activity 2a Look at the text above. Find and translate the sentences with 'which'.

Activity 2b Translate the following sentences. 1. About 90 percent of all children in the USA attend public school, which is free. The other 10 percent go to private schools, which often include religious education. 2. American specialized schools include schools that emphasize vocational subjects like business or auto mechanics too. High school students are often involved in non-academic activities that their school offers - for example, in drama clubs, sports teams, or the school newspaper. 3. In Estover Community College in England, pupils develop their understanding of the past, which will help them to live successfully in the present. 4. Estover Community College teaches pupils who will be responsible people in the future.

VIII. Consolidation.

- to work on exercises/

- to discuss the kinds of educational system of the UK and Uzbekistan.

- pupils are divided into 2 group and speak about educational systems with each other.

The system in the U.K

Some news from the internet

U.K vocational education and training is flexible, responsive and relevant to the needs of industry as well as individuals. Business works with government, professional and trade associations, awarding bodies and training providers to make sure that we can develop the skills we need tomorrow. Employers and individuals know that they get consistent standards and quality built into U.K vocational education and traing.

Key features of the system include:

• a network of Sector Skills Councils, where industry defines and plans for the skills it need.

• Vocational education and traing programmes starting at school for 14 year old and with links to university study from foundation to postgraduate degrees.

• Six levels of qualifications which span all the different education and training routes in a coherent national frame-work.

• Over 500 autonomous colleges’ and many more private education and training providers which work closely with community organizations and local business to make sure that their courses are responsive to local needs.

In the U.K, vocational education and training includes commercial, technical and professional development as well as transferable personal skills. And in our system, nothing stays still for a long.

That’s because the skills needed by the economy are constantly evolving in line with global trends and technological advances. So the system ensures we can be responsive to these needs within a quality framework which ensures that standards are kept consistently high.

In England, the learning and Skills Council co-ordinates the planning and funding of all academic and vocational post-16 further education and traing outside higher education.

Dear pupils you know some information about the Education of Uzbekistan. Now I have talked about the Education system of the U.K . And now I give a question for you. You must discuss it by method of DEBATE.

“Do you find the same and different sides of the Education of the U.K and Uzbekistan”.

(Pupils must answer my question)

Post-Activity

Grammar:

The same as… …is not the same as…

Remember: Adding extra information - use a comma and which. Formal and mostly in writing, e.g. About 90 percent of all children in the USA attend public school, which is free. Telling us which person/thing/place/time - no comma and who/which or that/where/when. Use in speech. Where's the pupil who needs a copy of the textbook? Referring to a whole sentence - which.

XI. The end of the lesson.

- marking active pupils during the lesson

- Giving home task

- to learn by heart new words.

- to make up new sentences using new words.

- see you next lesson.
